One of the things that I love most about this video is that it isn't centered around his love for WWX. I feel like most analyses or edits about LWJ always focus on his intense and emotional love. And don't get me wrong, I love that aspect of his character but I love how this video really explores his own growth and realization about what being a Lan is truly all about. He realizes that right and wrong isn't always clear cut and he challenges the status quo of his sect, seemingly going against them but actually holding true to the principles more than anyone. He does this through his association with WWX but it's something he must face alone in some regards. It makes me excited to think about the future of the Lan sect under his guidance.

True. Wei Ying challenged the Lan's way of viewing the world in black and white, he showed him the nuances of gray as well, the slim line between bad and good, truth and lies, cruelty, mercy, justice and so on. Their differences made them work well together, both as a couple and as cultivators.

LAN WANGJI is easily the most strongest character out of the untamed.
boy had to leave everything he knew, fight through everything he believed in, protect the one person who made him question his beliefs, stand against the one person he bowed to and respected his whole life while maintaining his righteousness, not afraid to stand against the world with the one he believed in.
He really said everything without saying much.

This is truly beautiful and perceptive - everything I wanted to say has been said already! I just wanted to add something which just occurred to me - how his clothes change over the years. Besides the colours - after Wei Wuxian dies, so much more white (mourning) in his wardrobe, very little, if any, blue - his earlier outfits were so sharp in the outlines, especially the shoulders. Lan Wangji in his thirties has softer outlines: no longer inflexible.

Imagine being brought up in such a rigorous environment. By such strict and firm rules, a lack of/restricted warmth from parental figures. Going by the book for 15- 16 years of your life. Being the key example to other disciples.
Only for it to all be crushed by this one person u meet. This person breaks all the rules you’ve upheld ur entire life. U can’t help but resent them but then u can’t do that either since u see how genuine and righteous that person is.
He becomes ur companion in the face of unforeseeable disaster. But also makes u question the core beliefs uve been growing around for ur entire life?
The internal turmoil LZ must’ve experienced is unimaginable. He’d been sticking by the book since birth, but now he’s faced situations where sticking by the book doesn’t deliver his principles.
This video quite nicely illustrates that conflict!
It makes me really contemplate about LZ’s struggles

I can't say that Lan Zhan gave up a lot because every character in this drama/novel made tremendous sacrifices.
But Lan Zhan's must have been difficult considering the way he was raised. In Asian culture and especially in China, traditions run deep. Respect for elders and those who raised you is held accountable at a very high expense. It takes guts to stand up against traditions and even more courage to voice out an opinion that'll ruin your reputation. Lan Zhan giving up all that for what he saw was right, is major character development.

The progression in his character is really astounding when you see it compiled like this. It's when I see edits like this that I wish we had CQL written in LWJ's point of view. • @sassylittleprophet
    @sassylittleprophet Před 2 lety +4

Lan Wangji's character arc reminds me of my own growth so much.
I was raised in a cult, in one of the strictest Christian denominations there is. I wanted to follow the rules because I was taught that rules help, guide, and protect people. I thought that anyone who didn't care about following the rules was a bad person, because to me following the rules meant you cared about people.
My parents were very abusive toward my siblings and I. I was the oldest sibling and constantly felt like I had to be a good example for my siblings. (Honestly the level of "older/oldest sibling" energy I got from Lan Wangji was insane. I know he's younger, but he's so serious, mature, and responsible that he feels like an older sibling.)
Since I did my best to follow the rules, I was punished the least. (I was still punished a lot though, my parents took offense to ANY behaviour that was perceived as disobedient, rebellious, or disrespectful. Or inconvenient.)
But even when there were times I could've gotten away with things, many times my conscience would scream at me until I willingly confessed to my parents and took whatever punishment they gave.
My parents, especially my mom, would make my siblings and I quote the verse Ephesians 6:1 before beating us, "Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right." So many times I wanted to quote back Ephesians 6:4, "And, ye fathers [and mothers], provoke not your children to wrath." (I never did though, as doing so would've resulted in more punishment.)
I followed the cult's rules and learned their doctrines rigorously since early childhood. When I was a teenager, I started questioning rules that didn't make any sense. Fortunately that led to a little more freedom in my life and family, because one of the rules was discarded, or rather redefined.
In my early adult life, I started questioning the rules even more, or rather the reasons behind these rules. For one thing, some of the rules didn't actually help people, but hurt them deeply. And most of the leaders were fond of using certain rules in particular to control/manipulate others and make them feel guilty or lesser than the "righteous" leaders, to maintain their own power over their congregation.
That didn't sit right with me.
My mind had been trained to think in such black and white terms: rules were good for people, therefore rules are good and breaking the rules is bad. But then I was forced to question: what's the point of having and following rules that harm people? If rules are meant to help, guide, and protect people, and there's a rule that's hurting rather than helping, that means you have a bad rule, and you need to change it, rather than blame the victims for their own trauma.
I started obviously, deliberately challenging the rules. I was of course met with opposition. I would have parts of sermons/lectures preached directly at me from the pulpit because of it.
I dared to ask: who was right, and who was wrong? Who was black, who was white? I knew I would suffer for it, even before I asked the question, but at the end of the day, I wanted nothing but a clear conscience.
I wasn't going to have anything more to do with people who used the righteousness of rules as a means to manipulate, control, and hurt other people for their own gain and power. That wasn't righteous.
I started going to a different congregation of the same cult. This leader was looser with the rules comparatively, but as time went on, it became apparent to me that if it came down to it, they would also choose following the rules versus changing their own beliefs to become a better person.
I left. I left the cult altogether, the community, the town I lived in, my family, and my husband (I was married at the time to an abuser, that didn't work out).
I knew I cared about changing to become a better person too much to stay dormant with people who didn't give a damn. I moved away and started over. It was exhilarating and terrifying. It was freedom. It was pain.
I've personally struggled a lot since then. I've grown by leaps and bounds, but very excruciatingly. I questioned everything and my entire worldview collapsed and was rebuilt from the ground up. I had to abandon everything I thought I knew -- about life, the world, my family, my own beliefs, everything.
It cost me everyone I loved. They were abusive, toxic, and very bad for me, but they were the only family and community that I knew. And whatever love they lacked toward me, I tried to make up for it by loving them that much harder. But everything has changed now. They only want the person they could control, while I only wanted to be loved. I've had to cut them all out of my life permanently for my own sake.
Now, I don't put much merit into rules. I have however learned to value empathy, honesty, and integrity. Living a life of principle is much more righteous than living a life of rules.

It was so great to see a really smartly edited video that focussed on the character growth of Lan Wangji. Of course we all adore the slow burn love story. But it was the way he wrestled with his upbringing and principles. right and wrong ,and how he matured as a result of that pain and confusion, which really made me love him and a character.
The scenes were really well picked, and I enjoyed how often you showed him alone, as it was something he went through by himself in a lot of ways. I also liked where you spliced several shots together to have him raise his gaze (in contrast to scenes with his uncle, representing the Lan strictness, where Wangji rarely looks him in the eye). this really does hammer home to the core of Wangji's being which is that he was effectively raised in an emotionally abusive situation, as a person who presents which autistic traits, and by a man was himself extremely influence by witnessing his brothers choices leading him towards a bath to ruin. Lan Wangji is lost and alone in way that so connect him to Wei Wuxian, but there is still so much of his social conditioning to over come, and you really manage to convey that in this video

Omg lovely edition. I really loved the whole internal crisis processing of Lan zhan's character . All the storm he went through in his mind , led him to a greater understanding of moral issues and human ideology . Of course wei ying is the leader of changing perspectives and embracing relativity or else this story wouldn't be born.

Oooooh, I absolutely loved the parallel between past Lan Zhan asking Wei Ying whether he'd abandon the "right" path and the present Wei Ying asking the same of Lan Zhan!
Chen Qing Ling really is all about what's right & what's wrong, who's black & who's white and how it's not that clear at all.
Loved the mv portraying Lan Zhan's struggle with it.

This is very impressive! The intense music kept me at the edge of my seat. The parallels are very well chosen. I just wish you would have sticked to one translation in the subtitles. Especially the part with who is good and who is evil, every time it is mentioned you use a different translation which takes away a bit of the effect. But I guess that is hard to do if you don't understand any Chinese at all... still loving this edit!

I watched the clip twice so as not to miss any insight. You couldn't have analyzed Wong Ji better, and yes, more and more could be added. I think he's a fascinating character precisely because he doesn't speak much and precisely because he is restrained and conservative with a rigid and rigorous upbringing, his eyes and behavior express all the inner dissonance felt by Wang Xien. Wong Xian makes him wonder and undermines all the elements of his life, causing him to turn his back on everything he believed in, wondering and actually making him develop and grow and grow. To see how this quiet, engaging character gets amazing and admirable content and not just an admirable look, it's really admirable. Two wonderful actors who brought this story to life and brought us a really special masterpiece. i wish there will be second season, its one of those stories that u want to keep going on and on....
