  • The zone read has football buzzing.
Popular among high school and college programs for decades, the offense has found a home in a number of NFL playbooks the past couple of seasons.
Based on its popularity, it's natural for youth coaches to want to install some version of it for their teams. But how can they without overcomplicating what already is a fast game for most young quarterbacks?
Easy. Take the decision-making out of it.
As a coach, call the play in the huddle whether the QB will hand off or keep the ball himself. This will limit much of the confusion on offense while still keeping the defense guessing.
The quarterback and running back use the same techniques and movements. There simply is a pre-determined decision on who runs with the ball.
Also, make sure your offensive linemen are schooled in zone blocking principles and techniques. Teams that can't zone block will have difficulty executing these plays.
Adjusting a youth playbook to more complicated schemes is best done in steps. Don't give kids more than they can handle.
