I win the award for stupidity, I gave them 2 numbers, my cell phone #, and when they told me it wasn't correct, I sent them a screenshot of my phone to prove that I typed the verification code they sent me. I was the biggest idiot! Thank you for giving me a way to hopefully undo the damage!
The news story needs to make the details of the exploit clearer. It says never share the validation code with strangers. What does that mean? When you link your GV # with a # that is assigned to you by your cellular provider, Google would send a text to that cellular number. This is the verification code. So a scammer would trick you to link your GV # with their cellular number? Who in their right mind would agree to link their GV # with an unknown number? That's the confusing part of this news story.
for me someone did this by making an instagram account pretending to be someone i knew saying that they "lost their account" and saying that they needed a code to get in. not very convincing, but that's how they do it
If for example you're selling a product on facebook marketplace and a scammer pretends to be interested in buying said product, they may ask you to provide the GV code that they triggered to be sent to you by going to the GV site and entering your phone number as the linked number, they will tell you that they need this code in order to verify that you're a real seller. Unfortunately, i fell for this today.
Yeah but if they already takeen your phone number...😅😅😅 They've immediately start using your phone number to Mask their host number 😅 Also "Google Voice" can only be used as a Paid Service... So you gotta set up a Google Voice account... Too much hurdles too much hassle.
I went through the steps and when I entered my phone number I never received the code? Does this mean that no one is using my phone number to link to a google voice number?
