Google Voice Code Facebook Marketplace Scam, Explained

- Beware of a Google Voice 6-digit verification code Facebook Marketplace scam or hack that involves receiving a text on your phone while attempting to sell an item on the Meta platform, Craigslist, OfferUp, and potentially other apps. Never give six-digit codes that you receive in texts to any strangers, ever. See the link below for what to do if you were a victim of this scam.
Here’s what this scam is all about. In July 2022, and in previous years, scammers have sought to target potential victims with a code scam involving Facebook Marketplace and Google Voice. Let's say you are a seller and you are listing a bicycle on Facebook Marketplace. If you immediately receive one or more messages within seconds or minutes and those potential buyers show urgency and that they are very interested in buying the bicycle, they might be scammers.
As a part of their code scam strategy, the Facebook Marketplace scammers will ask for your phone number if they didn’t already get it from the listing. They will also tell you that they are skeptical of you and that they think you (yes, you) might be a scammer, which of course is not true. They then say that they will buy the bicycle, but first you need to reassure them that you are not a scammer, asking you to tell them the 6-digit Google Voice verification code that you received in a text message. They are able to initiate this code to be sent to you from Google if they have your phone number from you two texting together or from it being visible on the website.
You might be wondering what the aim is of the Facebook Marketplace scammers if they do receive your 6-digit Google Voice verification code. Here’s what they are trying to do. The scammers may want to create a Google Voice account that is connected with your name and phone number so that they can continue targeting victims using your phone number. Google Voice is a telephone service that runs off of an internet signal, so imagine that someone is scamming people using the phone number you’ve had for years. It’s not a good situation to be in.
Do not give the Facebook Marketplace scammers any of your 6-digit Google Voice verification codes. They may also want to try to gain access to your Google account, personal information, or even try to go with a complex scam that allows them to get into your Facebook account. If you use Google’s Gmail for your email address that’s associated with your Facebook account, and they get into your Gmail account with their scam, then they may be able to access your Facebook account.

Lastly, enable two-factor authentication. This is important. This adds an additional layer of security on top of just your password. This means that anytime you log out and have to log back in on Google or Facebook, it will ask for your password as usual, but then it will also send you a code or ask you to check a “code generator.” This is a helpful feature in case your passwords are ever compromised.

What if your number was not associated with your google account but the scammer got it via texting with you? Should you add your potentially compromised number to google voice anyway, in order to follow your suggested steps?
Had to share this on my FB. I posted my vehicles for sale and this was tried on me. I immediately did a google search and saw it was a scam. She asked for the 6 digits and I told her I'd deleted it. She asked to send another code and NOPE, told her I'd report her. I then blocked her to keep her from my other listings. Thanks for posting this. It was definitely a scam.
I just sent a link to this video to three separate scammers who instantly responded when I posted items on FB. It seemed very phishy with poor spelling and punctuation, pushy urgency to send the code. Finding your video kept me safe. Thanks!
Thanks so much for this informative video. I experienced this today and I abruptly stopped in my tracks, used my intuition and did not send the code back but instead blocked and reported the scam. Phew! Seems like I have to go to school just to sell a product on FB these days.
So the question is what is Facebook doing about this? People are legitimately trying to sell items and have to deal with these people.

Just had this happen Jan 7 2023. I've only used FB marketplace for 1 previous item and listed a second today. Within seconds of it going live, I was messaged immediately. Asked everything just like you said. I told them to get a real job and they were obviously scammers. It becomes obvious when the grammar is poor and no spacing between words or periods and beginnings of the next sentence. Reported them to FB as a scam. Great video to give people insight and hopefully stops or minimizes the amount of people falling for this trend.

I knew this was a "red flag" right when I got the Google Voice Verification text message on my phone.
My thoughts on your video. You video has reached me one year from posting so your message is still getting out there. Anyone who posts a scam beware video is a hero. Saving one person makes it worth while. I would add that if you are selling something on any site, refusing to move the conversation to another platform like phone or text is a the way to stop scammers. These sites have communication methods in place to protect sellers. Thank you for your video.

Happened to me today. They asked for my phone number so I sent it. Then when they wanted a code I got suspicious and Googled it. So I asked them for their number and a code they made some excuse. So I blocked and reported them to Facebook. I didn't send the code to them but they wanted it really bad. Good information here. Thanks 👍

This happened to me this morning, a messenger friend asked for my phone number, stating FB/they need a friend to give them a code to unlock their FB account, I gave them my number. They asked did I get a code in my gmail account? I then thought something was strange and googled it to find it's a scam. I then sent them a picture of the scam and blocked/deleted them immediately. Great explanation, thanks. Just saw the latest version of this scam on Facebook Marketplace. When they asked for my phone number it was not text. It was a picture or image that had the text in the image. Makes me think Google is screening text looking for this scam and asking for the phone number with a picture of the text is the way they get around this.

So, we went through and changed my mom's passwords. But now I don't know what to do about the Google Voice stuff because after reading a few articles and stuff, they say that the scammer would have already removed the phone number from their account. So does something need to be done? We don't have Google Voice and never will, just as a side note if that helps with anything.

Hi quick question.. I just fell for the scam and gave out the code with my number. They said there was “verify problem” and requested family/ friend’s number. Posted an item on Facebook marketplace. Seemed legit to set up a meeting so I gave phone number and address for pick up. Then asked for code. I did not do anything regarding a code. Am I safe since they never sent me a code? Anything else I should do?

Thank You! I fell for this advertising a $100 item on Craigslist. Fortunately, immediately after I sent the scammer the 6-digit code I searched CZcams and another video (there are a few of these) walked through what to do to fix it. Secondly, VERY FORTUNATELY the scammer texted that the first code didn’t work and sent me a second code. The narrator said this is a very old scam, but it was the first time I had ever heard of it and the same goes for all my friends. I didn’t know about Google Voice and how it links to your mobile phone. As a backup verification I tried to contact Google. There isn’t any phone number you can call; you need to watch some CZcams videos from people who finally managed to get through to Google by other means. I’m still nervous as to whether or not my phone and email are safe.
I think you should be ok, but I do recommend changing the password to your email and enabling two-factor authentication, unless you already did all of this. You may also want to do the same thing for your bank account and your credit card login, just for peace of mind. Thanks for watching.

Why doesn’t Google Voice attach this kind of a Warning to the code they send . It looks like Google Voice doesn’t concern about this scam going on.

Honestly, I didn’t know about that before and unfortunately happened with me and i gave the scammer the code I didn’t know that was a scam but immediately I changed all my passwords to all my applications. So I do have a question please so after I changed all my passwords so that scammer can access to my phone or not?

Glad I checked youtube before proceeding. I thought it was phishy and was right. Are the scammers able to do anything with knowing your phone number? I sent them a text but of course didn't send any code whatsoever and called them out for the scam.

If you didn't give them the code or any other piece of vital information the worst thing they could do is add you to robo call lists.

They did send back a message that I needed to send them another number because mine was not 'varify'. We asked the scammer a simple question(which they could not answer) and told them that we know about this code scam. Also, sent them a link to your video :)

Went through that earlier this week. I knew nothing about this scam and it was later in the evening and not on my toes. Fortunately, I was getting hit with several at the same time so I put in the wrong codes, they were texting so fast I couldn't respond quick enough.
Realizing afterwards this wasn't normal I saw this and another video about the scam and immediately went and connected my number to my Google voice and changed my password just because.

I'm generally cautious. But I fell for that Google number thing. I sent the code, Despite asking and having questions or skeptic. But did it. Then theySent another message saying do you have another number that 1 wasn't working? I do have to stop verification. So hopefully nothing happened. I was pissed.. This happened to me last night. I never heard of this scam I gave my cell number and couple 6 digit numbers via screenshot and typing it in messenger. Messenger was going off on several items I have on marketplace. I blocked those scammers and made a complaint on FB choose harassment multiple times. Is my cell link to scammers only and I won’t get any sell to real people? Please help.
Don't worry. All you have to do is create a Google Voice account using the name same number that you received OTP on and when you enter the new OTP, it will be reclaimed and the scammer's account will be banned.

I got really high and tried selling my xbox on marketplace and someone tried doing this scam on me. I knew it didn't seem right so i tried to make sense of it and waited about 10 minutes and sent them the code. I got a request from a supposedly credit card company that was fishy cause they sent a new credit card to an address that I moved from 5 years ago, called and in order to correct address they wanted 6 digit passcode I ended up telling them to close account cause I was giving them the passcode which is crazy they would close account but not change my address. It was old navy and switched to Barclays when I called it sounded like telemarketing
They just tried to get me. I gave them my cell number but stopped short when they texted me with a California number. Since the FB MP item I’m selling was in NJ I didn’t go any further. So no code for the scammers. I reported them to the gov fraud agency and hopefully they will get caught.
