  • This video is all about what it's like to be a highly sensitive person (HSP). According to Elaine Aron's research, 15 to 20% of the population is highly sensitive. A highly sensitive person (HSP) experiences the world differently than others. Highly sensitive people tend to be more aware of subtleties and process information deeply.

This is me too. My childhood was hard because I didn’t realize what this was and neither did my parents. At times, I was made to feel bad about me just being me. Therapy and reading many books got me to see there is nothing wrong with me/us...we’re just wired differently and need different things/approaches. Thanks for making this important video. You’re awesome!

Thank you so much for sharing bits of your story! I am happy to hear that it resonated with you! Reading has certainty helped and it's one of my favorite things to do! :)

You described how I feel so well! It’s hard to explain to people how I process feelings sometimes and my family will often think I’m just ‘frail’, when actually it takes a lot of effort to not be affected by everyday life. Thanks for this video, made me feel a little more ‘normal’! Haha xxx

I completely relate. I didn’t make the connection until reading Susan Cain’s book Quiet. I admire how you have created a life for yourself that enables you to enjoy your life. I’d like to hear more about how you managed to create and maintain that. Practicing minimalism and veganism has given me much comfort.

I, too, am a highly sensitive person. It was hard as a kid because I couldn't understand, why I was so emotional and I sometimes struggled with seasonal affective disorder in the winter. I still get very affected by the weather, here in Denmark it rains a lot and some weeks we rarely see the sun, which can make me sad.
Now that I know a lot more about it and also discovered that I'm an introvert, I consider it a great gift. But it took a loooong time to get this far 😉
Thanks for sharing. It's so great to "meet" more and more people who are also highly sensitive. There are a lot of us and I think we have gone through a lot of the same struggles. It really helps to know we are not alone ☺️

Thank you so much for sharing your story! I feel you on the weather - it can be tricky when it's gray, rainy and plain uncomfortable outside. Absolutely! I am thrilled that there's so much information out there and that people are opening up about it :)

@@theminimalistninja yes it's fantastic that people are opening up about it and that we today can find so much information. I read Susan Cain's 'Quiet' 'and it was a changing point for me. I'm looking forward to read The Highly Sensitive Person, that you mention. ☺️

I can totally relate. All my life, people have been telling me that I am "too sensitive." Oftentimes, the people who would tell me this meant it in as a criticism rather than a compliment, which always left me feeling like maybe there was something wrong with me. Especially, after hearing these words so frequently. However, after quite some time, I have seen the value in being a more sensitive person and have accepted that in certain situations it can actually be extremely useful. I stumbled upon the topic about the highly sensitive person (HSP) by watching a documentary called "Sensitive" featuring Dr. Elaine Aron and her work. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it. I borrowed it for free from my library app (Hoopla). I am looking forward to reading her book on the HSP as well. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I found it tremendously helpful. I can't wait to see part 2. 😊

Oh, I am not sure if I've watched that one just yet! I'll definitely check it out! I feel you! It's, sadly, more often than not criticism which is mind-boggling. It's such an important trait and like you said, extremely useful! It'd be no good if we'd all be exactly the same. Part 2 will be up on the 16th! :)

  • @nourishnaturalnutritionfor1412

Wonderful content! I, too, am highly sensitive. My biggest issue has been the comments I get about my sensitivity...particularly related to my emotional reactions to situations. "Oh, you're too sensitive." "Lighten up." Etc. As I write this...my husband has gone off to perform this afternoon. He's a musician. I attend gigs about 30% of the time. Today, I am choosing to listen to my body/mind/spirit and stay at home. The music, restaurant/bar noise and social interactions are often way too stimulating. The house is still...and I can think and breathe :) Blessings!

I feel you on that one! Crowds can be overwhelming! There are days when I feel like it and then there a days when I also, like you, choose to stay in or do something a little more mellow! :)

I remember adding this when it first came out to my watch later list (which I’m going through now) and it’s interesting that half the reason of why I added it to that list was because I hated how much my family would say to me “...why are you so sensitive??!” and I was afraid the video would confirm it. So now that I finally watched it, I kept hearing them in the back of my head but I also felt acceptance. I was comforted in the thought that I’m not alone, and that we’re all different so I shouldn’t feel less than for being sensitive like this. I guess what I’m trying to say is thank you for sharing this 🙂.

I totally relate to this. After feeling overwhelmed by a lot of things in life for a long time, I found Elaine Aron's book, and it was so reassuring-it isn't necessarily a bad way to be even though for a long time it felt that way and I spent years trying to numb myself and shut off my sensitivity (I still do, it's hard to work through years of self-conditioning and policing...) I really relate to the comment about alcohol; it is just not my friend. I switched from coffee to tea which is a milder caffeine experience for me. Thank you for making this video!

Ninja, Thanks. While not a minimalist I do have a pared down house which I love. I do avoid large groups of people. I also am over-stimulated when around others and forget to pay attention to myself so I need down time to re-energize. How do you deal with the comments on CZcams on your channel or others being a highly sensitive person? I especially find TV very irritating and prefer not to be around a TV. Pop up Ads and blinking ads have to go. Thanks for a wonderful topic.

You can learn how to control your emotions so they don't control you. Read Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb and Awaken the Giant Within: How to Take Immediate Control of Your Mental, Emotional, Physical and Financial by Tony Robbins. It's a process, hope it helps.
