    I agree with you. Overall for 350 I'd choose something else. It's not a BAD blade, per se, but there are just too many little things that add up to it not being worth the money, when there are other blades out there that do a better job.

    I've probably rewatched all of Matthew Jensen's review and destruction videos 5 to 10 times and it never gets old. I recently purchased multiple katanas from Jkoo/sinosword, Huawei, and now Ryansword because of your referrals and I tell you Matt: it's been a pleasure watching your channel grow over the years! You need to set up a raffle for a new katana OR even a destroyed blade from your previous reviews. Love you man. Have a great night.

    Heck yeah, super informative. Your videos are starting to point me in a really quite good direction for a first real sword or three. Looking at one of the T10s from Ryujin right now and its caught my fancy, the Aikuchi if i remeber properly.

    Finally! 5 years later. Lol. Jk. I remember one of my first comments on your channel was asking about this brand as i was planning on and eventually bought this exact model. Was my 1st "real katana" I bought. Doesn't look like they've improved much. Would've liked to see a better tsuka, tsukamaki, and a geometrically terminated bohi. Hishigami fell out and ito came loose very quickly, But for the money, you could do much worse. Mine pretty much lives on the rack. Rarely use. Great destruction, as always dude.

    Good review. Seems odd to include hishigami, but neglect to inset the panels. Always thought of hishigami as a finer touch, while insetting the panels is a basic build point. Or at least sanding the edges flush so it looks inset.
    21:07 Weird direction. Maybe it's time to include long sleeves in these reviews (or a full chainmail suit?). Lots of mundane options available. Kevlar welding jacket, motorcycle leathers, chainsaw chaps etc.
    Stay safe and thanks for the well composed review

    The broken handle is the very reason that I always add extra pins to mine if they dont already have them. If they only have 1 & the handle isnt fitted specifically to the tang then heavy cutting can lead to it seesawing inside the handle. Though throwing it against a tree is a good way to do it. I missed that part the 1st time i watched through. Lol

    @npuzio1 Před 2 lety +1

    huh, that's strange!! I have a small, humble theory about the weird hardness of the T10 steel, from what I understand after doing a little research, the tungsten in the high carbon steel should have held up "better" and not have as much brittleness as 1095(I could be wrong). Maybe something wasn't exactly right with the steel tempering or the differential hardening process. That can potentially lead to softer edge internally, even though the hardness was fighting that 60 grit file on the edge.

      I have one of their more expensive swords, and it is absolutely terrifying. Sharp, durable, and handles like swords far more expensive than it. Maybe I got lucky, Idk. When the sword in the review broke, the grain structure looked awful. I feel like this sword should be considered a QC reject… the grain structure is just too bad. Usually they get their heat treat perfect.
      Regardless though, it was a great review and a small part of me wants to see this sword reviewed again, one that’s temper isn’t off.

  • @ForgeFireCustoms
    @ForgeFireCustoms Před 2 lety

    As a knife maker, the coarse grain on the broken ends and the discrepancy between the measured HRC and the edge performance is a sure sign that the manufacturer made little or no attempt at normalization in the heat treating process. Normalization would have refined the grain structure and made a more resilient blade.

    • @yharim180
      @yharim180 Před 5 měsíci

      I noticed that too, though I can’t say the same for my soshu kitae. Extremely resilient and holds up incredibly well to just about everything, doesn’t even have edge damage. ITF usually has an excellent HT in my own experience, so this might have been a lemon…

    What happens in the area of the kissaki, when the swords leaving a cut. Even then here's different geometry at the kissaki. Visually smaller than the rest of the blade, can you see where it transitions on the edge very rounded. After the sword zips the tatami, what happens at the yakote? Does it still continue cutting tameshigiri? If it cuts than you can avoid having to turn the sword and not have to risk edge rolling. So trying not to free the swords kissaki, so it doesn't get stuck at that kind of cut. the very tip of the swords blade where the boshi is, doesn't the geometry do less shock and awe?

  • @jananilcolonoscopu4034

    Maybe you could do a video reviewing and rating different cutting targets, as compared to tatami, for instance. That'd be interesting. I doubt there are many people who have clocked in the hours you have in striking non standard targets!

    At 10:41 seconds the second time you push the blade out of the saya, a small piece of wood broke off, or flew out.

  • @8thsinner
    @8thsinner Před 2 lety

    Whilst looking at that saya, I am reminded that there are historic versions with a removable/replaceable inner saya sleave, but I am wondering is there any kind of wear tabs that are removable in historic account? like, by that I mean, if you wear it down with the blade rubbing over and over, is there a small tab horn thing that can be removed and replaced...???
    That kind of kashira might actually not be too bad a design if it was custom fitted, a little thicker and had a peg to hold it hidden under the knots. I would also prefer the more traditional type, but some amalgamation of the two might have some additional benefits to rigidity and long term abuse.
    It seems an unusual balance of efficiency to go to all the trouble to add hishigami, but not chisel out a recess for the panels, they make a far bigger impression to poor quality than a lack of hishigami would imo, you can get a decent tight fit and good diamond without hishigami but bad panel placement just look really really bad, and that is really pronounced indeed.
    I do request that you stop hurting the damn trees though please, put up some kind of board like a scaffold plank or tree round in front of it if you want a stable brace to take the weight of thrown sharp things, but stop putting the tree in a position that it's diverting resources to heal all your violent woundings.

    Great review. Iron Tiger Forge caught my eye recently and I was definitely was intrigued. However, I will have to agree with you and say it's overpriced. Their are swords that perform and, I would say, look better for less money. Kind of disappointing honestly. Any way, you mentioned the hamon being difficult to see, and I noticed it's a T10 blade. I think there is a connection there. I have two differentially-hardened T10 blades both have very subtle hamons. They look nice, but you have to get the blade under a good light to really see the detail. Maybe it is coincidence or it has to do with the properties of T10. I'm no metallurgist, so I wouldn't know. Just an observation.

    • @KF1
      @KF1 Před 2 lety

      A lot of the prominent hamons you see on swords are acid-enhanced. You can search how to bring out the hamons on your T10s. I use lemon juice with a drop of dish soap and scrub the blade for a good while, followed by some metal polish to level out the look. Best to wear gloves for the process as you don't want to be absorbing oxides through your skin.

      I miss using my core a lot in practice, however, in these videos I don't swing at 100% for control. Sometimes I drop my weight into it but it is also hard to do that while not opening my hips to the target. When blades break and bounce back I don't want to be open to it.

    Hi Matt - This is a little off topic - but I wasn't sure how else to contact you. I really like your videos, but I (and I suspect many others) do not have a lot of spare time due to work and other commitments. Is there anyway you could do a 3-5 minute synopsis of your reviews either at the start or end of your videos for those of us who don't have the time to entirely watch every video you make? It would definitely help me, and if the content of the synopsis was compelling it would give me a reason to watch an entire video I might otherwise not watch.
