    You are the first one that i know of to speak about the 'modern' stupidly short fenders. I have modified several front fenders with long extenders + my own costume side holders for extra stability. It looks retro but I love it.... I'm too retro for modern designs

    Hello, I had a Kawasaki H - 1 that had stainless steel fenders. I really liked them After about the third year, these fenders looked to be chrome plated. I polished them very often with Nevr-Dull Magic Wadding by Eagle One. An excellent polishing tool. I used it to nicely polish an 1895 Mauser Bayonet Scabbard, over a summer, to nearly look chrome plated. This wadding is useful all over the bike, but I really liked my fenders.

    I think I mentioned in a previous comment to one of last year’s videos that I had installed the Hitchcocks stainless mudguards on my 650 when they were first introduced. Obviously they’re far superior in looks to the OEM mudguards. The only issue I ran into (and I brought this to their attention) was that even with the bit from the original installed for the rear fasteners, because of the difference in thickness (at least at that time) between the plastic and stainless, it required a 10mm washer on each rear fastener to snug them down. No major issue, just a quick homemade fix to ensure a secure fit.

    After watching and listening to your glowing praise of the RE interceptor I threw a leg over one at a dealership near home which as long as I can remember was a Honda one and has suddenly gone Royal Enfield. The bike has a lovely feel to it, it feels as light as a feather so I’m going to have to give it a try when the weather is fine. The build quality in all the RE bikes looks fabulous now. And yet they’re all still as cheap as chips.

    I'm glad I saw there was ention of this bracket under the front mudguard. I have not yet taken this off, bike 7 months old, and did not give a thought to what was underneath the plastic. I'm happy with the original guard at the moment but now I know there is steel in a place exposed to goodness knows what I'm going to take action. Off it will come and get a coating of waxoyl Thanks for an informative video.

    Hitchcocks do a set of spacers to raise the front mudguard slightly - ostensibly for chunkier tyres, but gives a slightly more traditional look too. Cheap as chips.

    Those stainless guards do look good. I think if I fit them I would put some corrosion protection on the underside & into the rolled sections too.
    As far as reliability is concerned my Interceptor passed the 10k mile mark a couple of days ago crossing theHumber bridge. Only problem so far, one punctured tyre. I still really enjoy riding it.

    I own a Harley, not an RE. And I haven't properly worked on a motorcycle in 50 years. At that time I owned '60s Triumphs and you didn't own a bike like that without putting in a lot of garage time. I remember the REs as beautiful, cool bikes, and the new ones don't disappoint. Despite all this, I love Stuart's videos--his explanations, has voice, everything. I will never put this mudguard on an RE, but I would watch this video again! Man crush I guess:-)

  • @davidmacgregor5193
    @davidmacgregor5193 Před 2 lety +1

    Hello Stuart, My 1980 Benelli Sei has a plastic front mudguard as stock fitment, it's the same item that was fitted to the early Moto Guzzi Le Mans models. I don't think the plastic mudguard makes my Benelli's front end look cheap, it is light in weight but it doesn't offer any fork flex prevention, I installed an aftermarket Telefix fork brace to stop the forks from flexing and it works great. Although the stainless steel mudguard looks great and it won't corrode, stainless steel is approximately one third heavier than mild steel and it's a lot heavier than the stock plastic mudguard. My old 1981 Triumph T140E Bonneville had stainless steel mudguards front and rear as stock fitment, needless to say there was no corrosion problem with those even riding 365 days a year. The Royal Enfield 650 twins are built to a tight budget with an abundance of plastic items, pressed foot controls instead of cast and the suspension isn't the best available, but for what they are they work well enough. I think that motorcyclists today are expecting more quality from a motorcycle than they've paid for, quality costs money and it would seriously affect the Royal Enfield's ticket price if they were to use all top quality equipment on their motorcycles. Royal Enfield have worked to a budget to offer their motorcycles at the bargain price that they are able to sell them for and I for one think they've done a very good job of it.

    Knowing how much you like swapping out the standard gear on your bikes Stuart, have you exchanged the standard Indian factory air in the tyres for our good old Yorkshire offering? You should find it suits your county better! - I run my Meteor on Lincolnshire air but, once across the Bridge, I swap it for the Yorkshire offering. I find it is copes with the hills better. Perhaps there is a gap in the market here for some enterprising firm to bottle the air for our various counties so motorcycle tinkerers can have a choice. - Chris.

    • @frankysworld
      @frankysworld Před 2 lety +3

      Hi Chris, Please make sure you deflate the tires completely and then rinse out your tires with refined space vacuum before switching. Also, make sure you get localised air that comes with an AER1B5 form that verifies the locality. It wouldn't be the first time someone thinks he is getting some grade A Scottish air, but ends up with a cheap Chinese knockoff and then having to rinse repeatedly with space vacuum to get rid of any residue of the cheap knockoff air. - you will notice that in performance and nothing is more embarrassing than your mates pointing out that they hear Chinese whispers coming from your tires! Word of warning - Although not in effect yet - there are plans to restrict motorcycles to the localised air they can use - if we are not careful, we may be stuck with importing Indian air - so it may be an idea to extract the original air and keep it on the side. Just in case.... :)

    I'm sure it works fine if you have the under-belly engine guard in place, with regards to splash onto the engine. But for those that don't have the under-belly guard I wonder why Hitchcock's doesn't off another version that just has two holes punched in it where you can incorporate your OEM extension. Even better would be this fender with two hole in the rear and an extension with 'slotted" holes so as to adjust how far down the extension goes. Personally I have no issues with the extension. I installed one on my '02 K1200RS and they work really well keeping the "clag" away from the engine, I got that word from David Hobbs. Good Stuff...Thanks!

    Interesting.
    The OE front mud guard,with its black rubber extension creates an optical illusion.
    Looking the part,but still providing adequate protection.
    Anti-corrosion wax/oil is excellent stuff,I use it on tools.
    When used on a bike it just needs to be added to the annual inspection list.
    My experience.
    Love the rolled edges,all around, on the "H" stainless mud guard.
    Nice work!
    On the 69/70 S ll the front mudguard is Norton (N15?),and the finish on the bottom edge
    nearest the road,is not a rolled edge,but a sharp edge.

When he inadvertently got caught in a bad weather it would be a real chore cleaning the bike afterwards so he made sure of weather conditions ( forecast) notoriously unreliable! ...before venturing out on his pride and joy....Having said that I'm inclined to check the weather...España... before venturing out, although for different reasons...I loath riding in inclement weather.
    I use a Torque Wench for all but the smallest fastenings. However, it is important to make sure of the tools accuracy. Buying a well known brand of proven reliability is paramount, plus it should be checked from time to time and always returned to zero when not in use. Used and maintained correctly they are invaluable for motorcycle use.

    These or something like them might work on my Continental. They look really cool; but living where the roads rhow up metal-devouring slush for almost half a year, I'll stick to the plastc versions.

    Hi Stuart, great video as always. I've been most impressed with the new Royal Enfield range - at least on looks, concept, riders' reports and cost - for I've yet to ride one. My only gripe about all of them, within the context of their design, is that they lack a kick-starter. Do you know why this is? I've heard various explanations put forward including the claim that fuel injected engines cannot be fired up with a kick-starter because they cannot be turned over fast enough. Is this true? You, I note - and you've told me - sometimes fire up your Classic 500 on the kick with little apparent difficulty - and I understand that this is a fuel injected job too. Another explanation I've heard is that there is no point because with fuel injection you still need battery power to power the fuel injector pump: leaving aside the presumption that a flat battery is the only reason anyone would use a kick-starter (I kick for fun) - an injector pump must use a lot less electrical power than a starter motor. So Stuart, I would be interested in any comments on the above - so far you've always talked sense and I'd love to hear more of it. Thanks. Stephen

      I think the low battery issue is not just the pump, but the fact that if its totally flat you have to spin the engine fast enough to generate enough power from the alternator for both for the spark and to power the brain and sensors enough to tell the injectors to fire. And it probably wants a few more revolutions than you could get with a kickstarter to work out its timing. I think that is why although there may not be a kickstarter they will bump start if you roll down a hill or get a push so that the engine turns over a few times.

      I'd be happy to substitute a kick starter for a smaller battery and the absence of a starter motor's weight.
      The sound of a big engine roaring to life after a kick-start, followed by the pillion climbing on the back
      is precious ritual.

      @@daveinwla6360 I may have agreed a few years ago, but unfortunately now no electric start would mean I couldn't ride it. I can hardly do the pull start on a lawnmower either.

      I assume its perfectly possible to have a kick start on a modern fuel injected motorcycle but just can't see the point on a road bike. Also makes sense that when the battery has dropped below a certain level and can't supply ECU, sensors, etc its not going to be able to inject any fuel. Modern electrical systems are pretty good so why from a design stand point would you include a kick starter. Also gonna be more cost just for very small market appeal. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the Bullet engine a design that has evolved, dating way back to the 1950's where as the new 650 engine is a totally modern design. So with the Bullet engine you may as well leave the kick start in place. How much does a modern starter motor and battery weigh ? Probably a tiny percentage of a 200kg plus bike. Also the Interceptor and GT are not race bikes or off road bikes where a few kgs here and there is going to make much difference to overall performance. So including a kick start now really would be a form over function thing. Plus its another point of failure, I certainly remember some bikes where the kick start would get very wobbly/loose after many years of use. Do any modern mass produced motorcycles from the big names come with a kick start ? It is kind of akin to still having a cracking handle on a car. I don't see the appeal even on what is classed as a modern retro. Press the button it roars into life! Is that that any different from kicking it into life?! You just have to have an Interceptor 650 and Bullet 500 classic that's the answer.

      @@seankearney6915 Hi Sean, thanks for the information. However, while I take your point, rarely do batteries go totally flat; what about if the battery is half flat, a more likely occurrence? You mightn't have enough power for the starter motor but you still have plenty for the fuel injector. Give me a kick over a bump any day of the week. In any case, what do we actually know, as opposed to assume? My W650 will fire up on the kick with a worn out battery on only 9 volts - but it is carburetor equipped and still passed the London ULEZ test with a NOX level of 0.03 as against the permitted level of 0.15. And it has an electric start too. But, like Dave InWLA, I actually like kicking a big engine into life; it is a precious ritual. Maybe someone could bring out a cartridge starter kit. In any case, I'd like to hear Stuart's thoughts on the subject. BTW if anyone other than the two of us is reading this, we are not related.
