    There are lots of rice farmers in Arkansas. I used to haul rice out to the grocery chain I worked for.

    Failure-Great video… I really didn’t know anything about rice farming until now. It has to use LOTS of water…..yeah, the beauty of retirement is doing things on YOUR terms.

      @FailureatRetirement  Před 3 měsíci

      It’s actually nowhere near as bad as you would think. It can really only be grown on tight ground that doesn’t hardly drain. The water use is almost all evaporation and evapo transpiration. Once the crop is high enough to shade the water it obviously uses even less. I would have to look it up to be sure but I wouldn’t be surprised if corn doesn’t take more water.

      @@FailureatRetirement Do you have issues with getting water?

    • @FailureatRetirement
      @FailureatRetirement  Před 3 měsíci

      @@reppfarms4493 it depends. Most people are on district water in this area because the power for well water is very expensive and makes it difficult to be profitable, ask me how I know 🤦🏻‍♂
      The water rights for the districts can be different and in drought they are frequently cut back. Two years ago we were in severe drought and many districts didn’t get any water at all. That is very rare but they frequently only get a percentage of what they have rights for.
      Our county is very fortunate in that it’s about half in the mountains and half in the valley. Years ago we had some true leaders who formed an agency for the whole county and got a dam built in our county, for our county. That agency delivers all of the water to the local districts. In 2022 during the severe cutbacks everyone in our county had full water thanks to their foresight.
      For some reason I have never farmed on district water. Most of the ranches I had were right next to town and owned by real estate developers when the district went in. They decided they didn’t need the water and elected not to take it. Very short sighted seeing how the land still isn’t developed to this day and the developers went broke and left. The ranch my son still has is further down the line from that and essentially got cut off by the neighbors not taking it.

      The UC extension has lots of information on the watering requirements of many different crops. Rice uses about 2/3 of the water of corn. Alfalfa and grass type crops use more water per acre than corn in the valley. A lot of those feed crops have been replaced by higher value crops that use 1/2 of the water per acre, yet people are up in arms over that.

    Morning thank you for the kind words. Lol I don’t really have it figured out but I’m trying.😂 and I never knew rice was grown in the states I thought it all came from other countries. Thank you for explaining that. So after it’s planted that field will be under water? I’d love to learn more. And I’d love to hear how you got to were you are today. Have a great day and thank you for the shout out.

      I feel like you have found the right path after years of wandering. Still going to take a minute to figure out the details but the direction is clear.
      The area where I live, Northern California, is a huge rice growing area and it’s typically the top crop in our county. Rice is also a big crop in Alabama and I think some is also grown in Texas. Rice is a huge export crop for California with much of it going to the pacific rim.
      In almost every case the field is completely flooded and the seed is flown on with an airplane. There are lots of details that I don’t know because I never grew rice.

    Failure, you working these side jobs reminds me of how those bailers in your other video were used in the Delta in the 80’s and 90’s, many were driven by retired guys. They would tow them out to the field in the morning, trade stories while waiting for the dew to burn off, get about 60 - 90 minutes of work, tow them back to the yard and then spend the rest of the day doing retired things.
    I have noticed that those contour checks have slowly disappeared over the past 25 years. My first job was running the grade rod laying out not contour checks but contour ditches to supply water, all of that is obsolete now with drip.

    • @FailureatRetirement
      @FailureatRetirement  Před 3 měsíci

      I remember retired guys doing seasonal tractor work here. I wasn’t around hay much in those days but there was definitely a group of older guys who would drive tractor in the spring and fall every year. I guess I’m that guy now except that I will only do it a day or two at a time.
      It’s very rare to see contours in rice anymore. Just too inefficient. I’ve disked that ranch before a number of years ago and this time, with straight checks, we saved at least half a day covering the whole thing. Surprised us both.
      The one that always fascinated me was the fruit orchards where they put new contour checks for every irrigation. Never did understand how they knew where to put them in the first place and how they were able to repeat it every time. Don’t see that anymore either.
      Thanks for watching 👍🏼🇺🇸

      In an orchard you would put a different color paint on the trunk.
      The other retired seasonal job was driving truck pulling sets of doubles with whatever crop you were harvesting.

      @@westsidesjvalley interesting that I never noticed that. I actually worked for fruit farmers for a while but didn’t drive tractor for them.
      Truck driving is a thing here as well, not just for harvest but for seasonal gravel hauling too.

      Spectacular video! I felt like I was driving the tractor! My phone doesn't do it justice so I'll watch on the big screen tonight. All the guys you mentioned all got to retirement via a different path it seems and seeing Ca, Tx, Virginia and Ohio is cool. I'll look up the beef guy too. Thanks for adding on to the end what the process is. Look forward to seeing your upcoming videos on how you got to retirement. Buzz

    You have failed, Failure.
    I’m 70 and mow my yard, help my husband with his remote job, pay all our bills…… regular never ending household chores.
    I guess I’m a failure, too!
    No pets. Our dog passed in 2021. We are dog people. So maybe soon we’ll get another dog and add that to my list of duties. Sorry, I became comfortable with no vet bills and relaxing more than before.
    I like working.👍

      It turns out that working is kind of my jam. Sounds like the same for you. I will say though that I’ve gotten to the point that a little bit of it goes a long way.
      We were always dog people as well and usually had two of them. We actually had three for a year or so and then we lost all three over about a year. We decided that we wanted to travel enough that it wouldn’t be fair to get another dog right away. I think we will get another one as we enter our slow go years.
