The engine cover was an option. The air cleaner pipe if factory. Be sure to keep engine area clean. Blow it off daily during harvest to prevent fire. Especially in dusty crops. Buy quality fuel! No ethanol!!! Drain tank at end of season. The box in cab is a blower. It's optional or aftermarket. For AC man just gona have to sac up..... Not worth putting a ac on. You can cut a hole in roof for camper ac but look like crap..... And impossible to keep dust out of those cabs. Back to small black fan. Those were used to make positive pressure in the cab to slow down dust entering cab and to move little air around operator. As far as too hot well I'm in Central Texas and yes it's hot in a class box. Tint windows, run morning or late afternoon. With cross wind open and close doors or windows. Just remembered these old units were build way before our time when men did not need ac... You have a great low hour clean harvester! Enjoy it bud!!!!!!

First off let's talk about safety. On these old machines don't ever ever leave the cab with the thresher running and even better to not even have the engine running. Old belts can grab on pulley even if not engaged. Turn on the machine and give everything a good oiling and grease as outlined in manual. Check for belt condition small cracks are not a major issue because they're just old adjust tension chain tension and also the wooden blocks that the chains run on.
Once you get it back in the barn double check all the bearings and see if there's anything getting hot or too warm you may want to replace it then or you may just want to keep an eye on it during Harvest. Back to your original question I would definitely replace lubricants filters any excessively worn items. Since these machines were so small compared to the Big Brother 95 and 105 typically they weren't crowded or overloaded like the big brothers, so you shouldn't have a lot of issues.
It wouldn't hurt to go ahead and get on a chat Forum like tractor talk or yesterday's tractors. The people that own these Square back Deere's love um. They are a great group and can be a good parts source.
My Dad had a nearly identical 45 from 1974-1997 when he retired. His was a '68. Had the grain platform like yours, used for soybeans, a belt pickup for swathed oats/wheat, and a 2 row corn head. Very familiar with that machine helping with setup and repairs over the years. The engine cover was optional, Dad's didn't have one either. There is supposed to be a rod for the tank auger and not a rope to hold it in place when not extended. The fan in the cab draws air from that screen area on the right over the lever console. There is supposed to be a air filter in there and a sheet metal cover is missing on the right over the outside screen. If it had a optional heater, its under the seat (Dad's was). The AC for these is exceedingly rare. It would appear you have a aftermarket header height automatic control. The clutch is mounted at the transmission under the machine and belt driven from the engine. There are 2 belts with a variable speed pulley setup in between. A lever on the steering wheel console controls a hydraulic cylinder to adjust the speed by moving the center pulley. You can adjust travel speed within a range in any of the 4 gears on the fly with a lever off the steering console. Levers on the floor on the left engage the main combine and the header if I recall right. Steering wheel post levers are for header height, reel height, and ground speed adjust. My Dad passed in 2012 and I am fortunate to have some video of him and the 45 harvesting the soybeans about 1996. That 4 cylinder engine has quite a howl under load.

We had Holstein dairy cows when I was growing up until Dad stopped milking and the artificial insemination guy would come out to do the deed. He had like a billion miles on a late 70s Ford Fiesta car that the rear seat was removed for room for the thermos tanks.

The series consists of JD 45,55,65,95 and 105 being the last in the JD model line up before completing to new models. Looking forward to watching you work on it and running. You've got a nice old girl there! Take care of her and she'll do you well. There's a Facebook group called "JOHN DEERE Straight-Through Pull-Type and 5 Series COMBINES" that I joined just because we used to have a 45 and then a 105. On the unloading auger there is a rod that replaces the rope. The rod hooks into the angle bracket on the auger and bolts to the angle iron brace on the side of the straw walkers close to the gas tank. Looks like the anchor bolt is still there. Then when you fold the auger out the rod goes in the other side of the angle bracket on the auger and hooks onto a stud on the front left corner of the hopper to hold the auger firm as it will be quite heavy when unloading. Hubby had one too. It was his first cab combine. He did find one mistake in the video. The host said it was a 1962 model. Actually it was after 1964 because before that date, the backs were rounded. In 1964, the backs were made square.
Got to be at least a 1964, that is the year that they came out with the square back rear end. I spent a few hours on my dads 1964 square back 45 that he did buy new, until we bought a new 4400 in 1971.
I am actually going to use our new 14ft hydrolic dump trailer. I have to make up some wooden sides to increase the carrying capacity but other than that I think it will work great! The trailer has multiple purposes and this is just another to add to the list. I’ve looked at some used seed trailers on Craigslist but I haven’t found any great deals. Thanks for the advice!
Forgive me for asking you a stupid question but you are not afraid to leave it with a raised header and is this harvester with such sentiment in America as the bison Z056 in Poland? Nice equipment you bought.
You can wash it to get it ready to paint and at the end of the season before you put it to bed but when you use it take the airhose and blow it out every morning don't use water if it isan't totally dry it will have wet spots that will hold seeds and clog up and is a pain in the but to clean out or cause other problems
The box with the fan on the ceiling may be a cab pressure fan some of the old deere combines had a positive pressure cab fan that pressurized the cab to keep the dust out.
We just bought a JD 8820 last week and when we parked it next to our JD 9610 they’re about the same size. I’m not sure about the grain tank size yet but they both can run 30ft headers so I’m pleased with that I’m glad we don’t run any gleaners anymore lol
i wouldn't worry about cracks in the tires, your head will be soft long before the tire fails, tires made back then last even with big cracks ,, you will never run that enough to have it fail, now if it was a much newer tire then ya id replace it
The original owner thought I would be fine too. I guess I’m not familiar with old tires. Cuz all of the newer tires are pretty much done when they get a crack that big.

When I was a kid dad had two of the square back 45’s. Had a round back before them. If I remember correctly there should be a cab filter where the screen was and that connected to the fan there in the cab. It wasn’t AC but at least you had air blowing on you.
It looks great I have a 40 combine no cab steel seat no power steering I love it it's slow but it combines clean. Little combines can go around groundhogs.
The opening in the cab should have a filter inside and a cover. Watch for coolant in the oil on this engine its a 145 cid sleeve in deck, dont get it hot. The engine cover was a option, air piping is fine.
To be honest, I never seen it in action! I'm originally from the city and when I visited the farm it was usually in the spring and summer. My Uncle retired in 1996, it's been parked ever since. My husband and I didn't try to start it. Not sure if it would. The one person who would know is gone. So, that's our story.

My father used to breed Holstein cows artificially, so I know exactly what your sweat shirt stands for. He worked years to build up his dairy farm. We knew which cow was coming into heat, which cows needed a break. My dad was one of the first to do that.
If it is going to be really expensive/might run out of power, do you have any other recommendations for keeping it cool and dust free in there? I haven’t done much research yet but I was hoping to spend 2-300 total on ac. Is that too unrealistic for a used ac unit?
@@FarmandHammer I'm think $2,300 might cover all the AC components. But now comes the big question is where you going to mount everything as for the condenser on the radiator an evaporator inside the cab an get all the lines ran into the cab too. If you good mechanical skills you can do it
Yes this is the green thing I was telling you about. But I also am going to have some videos about my dads tractor because I’ll also be using it in the future.
Prolly not. He may not be able to get OEM John Deere stuff off the shelf but most of the bearings on it has alemites and have a common size that he can order online for about 25% of what Mother Deere wants. The belts are all easily found and cheaper prices for brand name manufactures like Gates & etc. rather than going to Deere dealership. Not to mention he could buy another combine from Auctiontime or Tractorhouse for under 2k$ and usually close to 1k$. If you don't believe me look up Auctiontime past sales or look at the 95 on Tractorhouse for 1k$ now. These combines are relatively easy to work on and parts are easy to find from salvage yards across the US due to the shear numbers of them that were built. I know because I own one that needed a lot of work but a shop & parts manual helped me greatly. Also being able to use Google to find a part number greatly increases the chance to find new parts even though most of the original part numbers have been superseded to new part numbers in the John Deere parts data base. Not to mention no one buys parts from Deere unless you want to pay 3 or 4 times what a part is actually worth. I guarantee there isn't a bearing on that thing that can't be cross referenced, found online and bought and shipped and received in 5 days.

Well we don’t have any other crop equipment so I doubt I will. But fescue seed is supposed to be at an all time high this year so it should be decently profitable. Are there good profit margins with oats?
@@FarmandHammer that all depends on where you're located at have a place to go with them but oats makes great feed to for you're cattle too. Plus you can sell the straw off to help off set the cost of inputs.

I wouldn’t worry about the tires. After the first time you run it or work on it it will be in the scrap yard anyway. Also forget about ac. It’s just not gonna happen. Do yourself a favor and buy yourself a 66 or 7720.
Brendan Molloy No I’m realistic. While this old machine is really cool it will never be cost effective to run it. Parts availability is next to zero. After sitting for 8 years the grease has fallen to the bottom of a lot of the bearings which may possibly cause the seals to blow out the first time it runs. When it comes to the ac these machines are already underpowered I highly doubt that it will handle an ac system without an engine upgrade. Bottom line is it’s outdated and no longer supported by the dealer. I have this problem a lot. I also run older equipment. When it comes to a combine I make sure they are supported. you do not have time for breakdowns and scrambling to find parts.

I would suggest a small grain triler for your harvest, a small tractor big enough to pull your trailer, maybe with a loader on it.

Just turn the fans on high and crack a window you will be surprised how comfortable you will be

Prolly not. He may not be able to get OEM John Deere stuff off the shelf but most of the bearings on it has alemites and have a common size that he can order online for about 25% of what Mother Deere wants. The belts are all easily found and cheaper prices for brand name manufactures like Gates & etc. rather than going to Deere dealership. Not to mention he could buy another combine from Auctiontime or Tractorhouse for under 2k$ and usually close to 1k$. If you don't believe me look up Auctiontime past sales or look at the 95 on Tractorhouse for 1k$ now. These combines are relatively easy to work on and parts are easy to find from salvage yards across the US due to the shear numbers of them that were built. I know because I own one that needed a lot of work but a shop & parts manual helped me greatly. Also being able to use Google to find a part number greatly increases the chance to find new parts even though most of the original part numbers have been superseded to new part numbers in the John Deere parts data base. Not to mention no one buys parts from Deere unless you want to pay 3 or 4 times what a part is actually worth. I guarantee there isn't a bearing on that thing that can't be cross referenced, found online and bought and shipped and received in 5 days.

They are estimating that it will be around 60-65 cents per pound this year. I think it is supposed to be an all time high, could be wrong though.

Well we don’t have any other crop equipment so I doubt I will. But fescue seed is supposed to be at an all time high this year so it should be decently profitable. Are there good profit margins with oats?
@@FarmandHammer that all depends on where you're located at have a place to go with them but oats makes great feed to for you're cattle too. Plus you can sell the straw off to help off set the cost of inputs.

I wouldn’t worry about the tires. After the first time you run it or work on it it will be in the scrap yard anyway. Also forget about ac. It’s just not gonna happen. Do yourself a favor and buy yourself a 66 or 7720.

Brendan Molloy No I’m realistic. While this old machine is really cool it will never be cost effective to run it. Parts availability is next to zero. After sitting for 8 years the grease has fallen to the bottom of a lot of the bearings which may possibly cause the seals to blow out the first time it runs. When it comes to the ac these machines are already underpowered I highly doubt that it will handle an ac system without an engine upgrade. Bottom line is it’s outdated and no longer supported by the dealer. I have this problem a lot. I also run older equipment. When it comes to a combine I make sure they are supported. you do not have time for breakdowns and scrambling to find parts.
