Just to add an additional data point - here is a common interior color scheme in the San Francisco Bay Area:
Walls: Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray (flat)
Baseboard, door & window trim (basically anything made of wood): Swiss coffee (semi-gloss)
Kitchen/Bathroom/Laundry: Swiss coffee semi-gloss on everything, even the ceiling
    Interior doors: Swiss coffee (semi-gloss)
Ceilings & closets: use an inexpensive flat white, maybe even flat white maintenance paint ($33 USD for 5 gallons - www.homedepot.com/p/Glidden-Maintenance-5-gal-Flat-Interior-and-Exterior-Paint-920-05/100141333)
Garage interior: same flat white maintenance paint as above
Realtors suggest these colors simply because they appeal to 90% of home buyers. If your house is painted in colors that appeal to only 50% of buyers than the seller really should change that color. The reason realtors give is called the "Law of Supply and Demand". They claim that if more buyers desire a house, that house will ultimately sell at a higher price.
The flat paint on walls is simply because flat hides wall imperfections. If your walls are particularly perfect then going up in gloss is ok, but typical walls in the SF Bay Area are imperfect.
Note SF Bay Area houses are normally ~ $1-million USD
