    I really appreciate what you guys said about not assuming your audience is stupid. I've been following Peterson for a couple of years now and have integrated many deep psychological lessons into my life from his teachings. I am a 23 year old white, male factory worker with a high school education and I understand many of these high level conversations and apply them to my life regularly. They have helped tremendously. What I don't understand I can easily learn about via the Internet. Thank you for not talking down or being elitist toward the working class. I will do my best to reciprocate and pay these lessons forward throughout my life.

      I wonder how many Peterson followers also follow the Kardashians? That's part of the problem. When such stupidity is watched by so many (the Kardashians I mean), can we really blame mainstream media for being so shallow? Take the old cable History Channel for example. It started off fantastic, but they soon discovered that low brow documentaries drew in higher ratings.

      @@andrewthomas695 "When such stupidity is watched by so many, can we really blame mainstream media for being so shallow?"
      I.M.O: This point is PROFOUNDLY relevant/important in regards to conceding the causation's for the current state of our(species) misguided/shallow focus',
      I think the answer is a blatantly obvious "NO WE CAN'T"(blame M-S-media), but the demographic you're alluding to make up the majority, and unfortunately majority rules.
      I often orient that same point around music in hopes of alluding to the very same sentiment.
      "Why does shitty pop-music rooted in vapid and one dimensional focus' sell the most units/profit the most?"
      I understand that age demographics affect this outcome, but I also have a intricate understanding of how/where and why the vast majority of said demographic stands to epitomize the narrow thought scopes these groups are operating under.
      It's almost as if there's a correlation between said focus, and an individuals ability to recognize, accept and remedy the hindrances which said focus NECESSARILY amounts to.
      Round and round we/they go.

      Indeed.
      Talking to each other is the cure to our political climate, that's not heated but literally burning and leading to some form of imploding.
      Let's go back to heated, and eventually cool down a bit. Better for all us, being disciplined adult humans and no chimpanzees throwing a tantrum.
      Let's quit putting words in each other's mouth and genuinely talk.

    • @VColossalV
      @VColossalV Před 5 lety

      00rphb What you are saying doesn't contradict what I said. Yes, until now and probably for a while longer, it is very useful to us. That does not mean we will not discover alternative sources of energy that will do what we require or perhaps even more. We will need it to survive and when pressed humans are capable of greatness.

    • @VColossalV
      @VColossalV Před 5 lety

      00rphb So you admit that there are other countries that consume less energy but are better off. Completely debunking your own notion that prosperity and progress is entirely linked with how much oil we use. How can that be the case. Clearly it cannot be the only factor and we do not have to stop progress.

    • @VColossalV
      @VColossalV Před 5 lety

      00rphb Pinker is not just talking about GDP is he, not all human progress is because of oil. The staggering imrpovements in the third world for example. Economic growth, sure, I am sure that is partly the case though I would like to hear experts on the matter, I am sure it is more complicated.
      I think you are assuming that about Norway. What basis to claim it must be because they have less air conditioning or swimming pools? Perhaps it is the case that you don't NEED oil to prosper. Usually reality is not so simple, there are many factors.
      Of course I agree that we need to become less reliant on oil and search for alternate sources of energy. I believe that we are capable of it, especially if it is required to survive.

    • @VColossalV
      @VColossalV Před 5 lety

      00rphb I believe that in a few decades it is highly likely we will have found good and sustainable sources of energy besides oil, you have to remember that technology is not only improving but at an exponential rate, a rate which few predicted. Literally just over 25 years ago there was no internet, think about how crazy that is when you really stop and think about it. Perhaps our destiny is to use oil as a stepping stone, to exploit it for all it's worth in order to reach the next thing which would otherwise not be possible.
      Of course we are using oil at the expense of the environment and climate which is bad but just trying to see positives.

    I am from Brazil. It is no quite accurate that government increasing spending on welfare leads to prosperity in the bottom of the pyramid. Actually, the government increased taxes and social spending and led to economic recession and insolvency of state, reversing all short term gains. And all the gain was disproportionately captured by people in public jobs, what is unfair and unsustainable because they don't create wealth. Now, the government is getting the country out of the long recession with a classic liberal agenda, reforming the pensions system, lowering taxes and making the regulations business friendly. In my perception, most of the time government goes to left policies, the results are catastrophic in the middle to long run. Government takes money to spend in a inefficient fashion provoking most of the time obnoxious side effects even when the goals comes from good intentions. Take the social protection to poor single mothers that led to increasing poor single mothers rates.

    I completely disagree with the idea that inequality is a problem. It's not only not a problem, but it's also fair. People are not equally competent, not equally skilled, ambitious, creative, conscientious and responsible. People don't produce equally. To try to "solve" inequality would mean to take the property of the productive and give it to the non productive, also known as compulsory redistribution of wealth. It's a Marxist idea which goes against individual sovereignty and it's downright unjust and evil. The way out of poverty is only through individual responsibility, to which the welfare state is the very antithesis of.

    One of the most truthful, and yet also most resented, aspects of relationships is that the participants who care the least about maintaining the relationship often have most of the bargaining power in the relationship. I hated learning about this inevitably relevant part of all human experience. I still hate it. It rewards those who are the most thoughtless while penalizing those who are the most thoughtful. This tends to be most true of our short term relationships, and hopefully less true of our long term relationships over time. But it takes a great deal of time to have a coterie of comrades that can be so trusted,... or, at least, that is the actual practical experience of many of us. The self discipline to value the long term trust of a good friend over the short term satisfactions offered by betrayal,.. such self discipline is often neglected for too long a period of time.

    The problem with Globalism is only the wealthy benefit because it inherently creates a caste system. The wealthy don't have to follow the rules set to all others and is generally bureaucratic. This takes away the rights of the individual to benefit the group as a whole, taking away personal liberties. The UN and EU are good example of this, being the fact is the people do directly elect the people making the rules. These people only do what they believe is the best for the group, regardless of the what it does to the individual. This is what has driven the populous movement on the right over the last few decades, because people feel that they are not getting a fair shake from the bureaucracy.

      @Morgan Allen GDP rises because of Capitalism, not because of globalism in general. Globalism is both Economic and Social polices. Capitalism is fine by itself, but when you add a social construct to it, that is where it breaks. Good examples of this are socialist countries, the population gets poorer, but the government gets richer. The remove of capitalism causes that increase in poor population. You can site both examples, and the one thing in common is capitalism builds wealth, social polices can destroy wealth. Globalism is the combination of both, and if use badly is far worse then Capitalism on its own.

      @Morgan AllenYou must not have read my initial post, I gave an example of the Social side of Globalism, the UN. Its a bureaucratic body of unelected people. The EU is another example of the attempt to apply Globalism style but in a microcosm and shows the same flaws. The UN policies are more leaning of Socialism policies, and not capitalistic policies.

      @Morgan Allen I will take a look, I enjoy looking a various points of view being a libertarian. But to my original point that Globalism is generally not good. People like to conflate globalism and global markets. Free trade and Fair trade are capitalistic, not specifically Globalism. Globalism is a social economic environment and must not be conflated with the global trade in general.

    1:27:20 Oh, PLEASE make this happen: A debate between, on the one hand: Jordan Peterson and Ben Shapiro and on the other: Sam Harris and Steven Pinker. Topic: Some motion / question around the contributions of the Judeo-Christian tradition, science and the enlightenment to modern progress / wellbeing. Moderator: Maybe Jonathan Haidt or Bret Weinstein? (Haidt seems more qualified for the subject matter but Weinstein did a SUPERB job in the 2018 Harris-Peterson debate). If I have to be perfectly honest, I think this issue is almost impossible to solve and it's surely something cultural historians should be better prepared to debate. However, in terms of entertainment value... BOY I'd love to see that debate!
