Lyrics:
Come and talk of all the things we did today
Here and laugh about our funny little ways
While we have a few minutes to breathe
And I know that it's time you must leave
But darling be home soon
I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled
My darling be home soon
It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since I toddled
For the great relief of having you to talk to
And now, a quarter of my life is almost passed
I think I've come to see myself at last
And I see that the time spent confused
Was the time that I spent without you
And I feel myself in gloom
So darling be home soon
I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled
My darling be home soon
It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since I toddled
For the great relief of having you to talk to
[Instrumental Bridge]
So darling...
My darling be home soon
I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled
My darling be home soon
It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since I toddled
For the great relief of having you to talk to
Go and beat your crazy head against the sky
Try and see beyond the houses and your eyes
It's OK to shoot the moon
Darling be home soon
I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled
My darling be home soon
It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since I toddled
For the great relief of having you to talk to

It it is terribly heartening to read how so very many of you comport with what this song means to me as well. I'm 78 now. While in 1973 the song had already been out for a while and always loved by me...seen 'em live in '67... it took on its Monumental and what will be eternal berth in the most special place of my heart on May 30th 1973 when I was in Los Angeles for what was 5 months pursuing a career in acting and waiting on tables in Westwood Village.... and my uncle called me to tell me that my mom was in dire straights and that I should come home to Buffalo New York right away. I did so of course and found that she had already passed ..no one wanting me to get that news all alone in L.A and Dad..brothers being too distraught to even speak., her having had open heart surgery and not making it - my not having been privy to that because of her not wanting me to worry while I pursued my crazy dream..and that she would be all good from then on-.... This song....either I'd heard it somewhere just before bolting for the airport or on the way or maybe just came into my head via her spirit ...but it played in my head the whole way and to the house where the whole extended family sat weeping. My eyes flood with tears and chest quakes as I write yas heartiest here now ..."I Miss You Ma"
It was featured in the movie "You're A Big Boy Now", good film!
You're a Big Boy Now,another of my favourite Loving Spoonful songs.
It doesn't get any easier, does it? That spirit you should know that it is yours and if you did not recall your parents they would not live in spirit, they would not live in your spirit. Do not forget that because you are Loved. It was good to read what you have written, that we all might learn from the pain and from the suffering but most certainly you must know you were loved and are loved.
@@Uncle65788Beautifully said my friend...
nothing happens as we wish it could especially in death.... you had a beautiful caring and loving family. remember that! she left this earth loving you. everything else is sentimental in your memories of her...
I always viewed this as a tremendously powerful ballad for all the Viet Nam vets who never made it back home to their sweethearts!
A quarter of my life has almost passed three times. Still love this song.
Yes, I'm in the last quarter of my life and still love this song.
Not quite to 3 quarters of my life, but I have always loved this song
me too.
Same here...73 now. Magic still

this was the song my dad would listen to when he was missing my mom when she was at work or someplace else. I sang it at his funeral 3 years ago, listening to it now makes me think of him.
That's beautiful .. Sorry for your loss .. A wonderful way to remember him.
Nice. Great song.
Did you manage to sing without crying?
Love your story
😪
"for the great relief of having you to talk to" is one of my favorite lyrics. I think John Sebastian must have had an old soul at a young age. Not your typical "you're so hot, baby" love songs. It's about how much he values HER, her company, her empathy, her thoughts.
this and Dangling Conversation by Simon & Garfunkel masterpiece of lyrics
Which is why he and Catherine are still married in 2022, I'm sure.
@@loriruggiero8950
Yeah, thanks for reminding me. after this song I'm going to dangling conversation.
Here's one for you. Reflections of My Life. Marmalades.
true artists
Hey MADVACATE, you mad bro?
Its ok to shoot the moon. Got it?
This song is proof that the 60’s were the most amazing decade ever. Thank you John Sebastian.
Music had such imagination and creativity in that decade.
This and "The Younger Generation", are the Spoonful's songs that just get me!
One of the most underrated songs of that era or any era , Spoonful was deep
Hippie Folk songs of the 60’s then Psychedelic Rock followed up by Singer Songwriters of the 70’s ...two decades of pure magic. The world will never see the likes of it again.
Amen, Mind Bender. You said it.
I fear you are right. I grieve for young people having the music they have now. This song alone is magical
❤😢
In 2001, my daughter was getting married to a wonderful young man that was going to whisk her off to start a new life 2,000 miles away, and as joyful as I was for the both of them, it was truly breaking my heart wide open. They were both too young for this beautiful song to really mean anything to them, but at their reception, I , with a few musician friends backing me up, sang this song to my daughter, and her new husband, with just a few lyrical changes that made it personal to us all. To this day, neither I, nor my extended family could believe that I could make it through the entire song without completely breaking down sobbing. Because all these years later, just hearing the original version turns me to a sobbing wreck. There was a video recorded that night, and now that I moved to be closer to them “and my grandkids”, we have watched it together. I will always thank God for John Sebastian writing such a beautiful, timeless, and moving song for ALL AGES!!! Thank you, from the bottom of my simple heart, Mr. Sebastian!
When I was a 19 year old soon to be mothe, r my husband I and I went to the movie with Loving Spoofull songs. As we came out of the theatre it was a beautiful summer evening still very light. I felt so perfectly happy in that moment with my husband. Life was lovely and a new baby coming. All these years have now passed and in my old age I still find this song so beautiful and evocative of how lovely life can be. Thank you for sharing your nice story and moving to be close to people. No one ever did that for me.
What a lucky girl she is to have such a loving father. Happy to hear they made you a grandfather and you are now living closer and enjoying your family togetherness and your grandchildren.
"Quarter of my life is almost passed" Personally I have the "Three score and ten" under my belt. Hope for a few more years to enjoy this music!
Young pup. I have 3 score and almost 15. 🤪👍
.....and those days never to be seen again. But we still have people.....💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
@@kenackerman3708 3 score and 14 for me. Made it through Vietnam in 1967-68 . I think I make a few more. Love the oldies
Time really drives us all, doesn’t it? Peace!🌺
When I hear this song and I’m singing to myself and the “a quarter of my life is almost past” lyric comes up, my brain says “yeah, right, if you live to be 280!” Great, great song.
Hey youngsters! Eventually you will discover what a "great relief of having" the one you love to talk to. The lyrics will change their meaning and you'll appreciate this masterpiece all over again.
best thoughts and words ever,
This created such a yearning in me way back when I first heard this. It's still hauntingly beautiful to me after all these years.
amen

I understand.....❤
Surprisingly, I don't remember it from back then. I would have been about 20 then.
Takes me to a time of love and innocence.
This song is a masterpiece
It's good, but not a masterpiece. "I've been waiting since I toddled" is just awkward as hell.
Toddled is fn brilliant!🙃
@@biguzzetti do you have any idea what it means? LOTS of reviews of the song mention how cringy this is. He's basically saying he wanted to date this woman, when they were both 2 years old.

It's everything . A song a good song don't make you the boss or the king or queen of music it's the people who are the simplest best and at that moment touch you, that's what separates entainers from performer's. You can tell when people care what their saying. from those that are playing fluff for a buck.
A quarter? Hell, three quarters. I'll be 75 this year. I do remember singing along to this song when it was almost a quarter in 1966. I was 20.
LOL. When I hear and sing this song to myself now, I say “3 quarters” I thought I was the only person to do that. I was 12 when it came out.
I’m 75 also and where did that quarter of my life go……So Fast!!!!
The memories are your gifts
Gawd this is good. Still beautiful after all these years.
I agree. This is one of their best performances.
Proof, yet again, that there’s no argument: The 60s is the greatest era in music. No other compares. Not even close.
Don’t know why, but I just had to hear that song today. ❤️
Here's another good one.
Reflections Of My Life by
The Marmalades
Me2 :)
I was a pre-teen when this song came out, did not fully comprehend the deep feelings he sang about, but knew it was a beautiful love sing, and still is.
Yes, me too....
@@26rickg I was 12. But I was enthralled by one of the girls in my 6th grade class. So, I had some idea about what the longing was.
In the early 1960s I used to work for my grandfather every Christmas, Easter, and summer vacations at his slaughterhouse. Bu the time I was 16 (1967) I was able to buy my own car, or actually a yellow 1962 Ford pickup truck! I was living at Newport Beach, Ca.
Good God that was a good time. A couple of my buddies and I made a cheap camper out of 2 sheets of 4X8 plywood and a piece of canvas for a back cover. One of these guys gave me a cowboy. Hanging out at the Newport pier some friends began to call me cowboy. Gas was dirt cheap and auto insurance was not required. We were out for fun and found it in abundance! Recent history confirms that we had the best music ever!!!

Awesome Doug!

Such a loving and peaceful song..
There will never be another time like the 60s and 70s

One of my favorites. John Sebastian was a musical genius.
His voice was annointed. This song always made me cry and after all these years it still does! ❤❤❤❤❤😅😅😅😅😅❤❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂❤❤
Nothing said more than the music of the hippie generation. Love your fellow brother and pick up a little garbage on your way out and everything will be alright
@John Connolly people started thinking then they stopped getting high. Im glad im not one of them. There world became complex with deadlines and commitments and mine?? well lets say that im still loving my fellow brother and still picking up a little garbage. Iron Eyes Cody would be proud
@John Connolly I watched them sell out one, by one, by one. It broke my heart. So much promise.
Amen to that.
@John Connolly the card-carrying communists conquered America. Not with bullets, but with a flood of propaganda so hateful, we're divided by class, race, education and every other way. Obama literally GAVE us Trump. And he's showing us we MUST NOT be divided. But united against all the evil now. #saveourchildren
What happened? Greed Greed Greed. Consume more if you want happiness. What gives me joy? Knowing that 50 years later, I have not sold out have maintained my ideals and though not as frequent I still enjoy getting high from time to time. And without a doubt, as I witnessed so many do. I never became my parents.
This is on the same level of John Lennon's 'Hide Your Love Away'....a truly heartfelt paean of a young man to a girl he cherishes so deeply and so wants to have in his arms again. This is the classic song of the Loving Spoonful; and John Sebastian....a masterpiece esp. that backing orchestra of strings and brass but most of all the 'strings'....always always the strings!
I totally agree with you .. the STRINGS just make the song even greater :) ...
This ranks significantly higher in my opinion, always reminds me of heading over the bridge from Manteo to Nags Head late one Sunday afternoon 20 years go.
i've always sensed that this is harder to sing than it appears
It's A Missive About The Pain And Beauty Of The Waitng For That Person...The Other Half Of Yourself That You Can't Truly Sing Without.
For me, it's the horns.
I heard this on "This is Us" tonight.I remember when this song was released
It blew me away. One of my favorites off all time.I totally lost track of what was going on in the
show.I got chills and teared up.Can't believe I have not heard it in over 50 yrs.....I think that
is because it was not a giant hit when it was out. That's ok by me.It snuck up on me and was
such a pleasant surprise. Had to come to You Tube to hear it again.

Well said my friend
This band was so good. We were spoiled back then.
The Beatles set the bar pretty high and everyone else had to bring their "A-Game" to stay afloat musically. That set off a really amazing decade in music.........
Oh we were so spoiled! Great song! Joe Cocker did a great job too!
What a super great song!! No music today does not even come close!

I walked into the room and fell in love with her, love at first sight. I would play this song over and over while waiting for her to get home. She would leave me heartbroken, but I still think of her after almost 50 years.
Music rarely gets better than this John B. Sebastian masterpiece.✌😇
I remember hearing this song & feeling such an emotional rush. I can still remember that intensity a half century later. I love the way it builds with increased orchestration. What a great song !
I saw John & the Spoonful in the University of Dayton (Ohio) Fieldhouse in 1967 when I was 17. John sang this beautiful song and many others. The electricity went out about 2/3's of the way through the show and John & the boys converted to acoustic in about ten minutes and the show went on, lit by cigarettes and doobies and reflections off of quarts of Budweiser beer. A great time was had by all.!
I often feel like weeping when I hear the radio garbage young kids are listening to, thinking that what they are hearing is REALLY GOOD MUSIC! I raised my kids and now, my grandkids to listen to,and appreciate the best music from the 40s,50s,… on up to the 80s. So they could really know that timeless songs like “Darlin’ be home soon” are available to hear, enjoy, love, and even weep to. That is what real music does, throughout all time.( what a pity if all they listen to is W.A.P.)
One of the great love songs of all time.
I left my love during this song and she helped me pack. After forty years we have reunited socially and it brings tears to my eyes.
This beautiful song is as classy as it gets. Wow, these guys were just great!
With all those Spoonful hits, this is still my favorite.
They had a lot of great radio hits. This was not one of them but it stands head and shoulders above those others. This and "Summer in the City", clearly the best.
Listened to these songs at high school dances. Hot girls, fast cars, war going on in Vietnam, and we just rolled with the punches! Love this song, reminds me of a girl I dated over a half century ago, and I still dream of her!
The title of this song is a message from My Barbra Rose in Heaven. My Darling-of-Darlings (Barb) -- I'll be Home (soon enough). I know you'll be waiting for me.
Damn! I Love This Song. For All Of Those Who Await Their Love...When The Minutes Of Waiting Seem Like Hours...The Seconds An Eternity...We Wait, And Wait For Them. More's The Pity That We're So Prideful And Grateful That They'll Never Know...Purely Timeless.
The song still brings tears to my eyes. I finally found someone who I can say Darlin' be home soon.
Dennis Praeger has been playing the intro of this song on his talk show and I remembered what a great song I dearly loved. Had to hunt around a little to find it and embarrassed to say I didn't remember it was the Loving Spoonful, one of my favorite groups back when they were on the air. I've been a "Rain on the Roof" and Summertime in the City" fanatic also
I love the orchestration. It seeps in so softly and yet adds depth and passion to the lyrics. It makes it a beautiful love song.
John could barely sing over all of that! 😄😄🎶🎶
Here,here😅
I've seen him perform this at our concert series, SOLO, and it is just as beautiful and mesmerizing done that way. 🥲
But i get what you are saying about this arrangement! 😉 👍
Very lucky for those who, once in a lifetime, connect with: "The great relief of having you to talk to".
"And I see that the time spent confused, was the time that I spent without you" and "the great relief of having you to talk to"--perhaps a definition of love or a declaration of love..and then the violins!! The violins!!!! I'm 73 now and still listen to this often. And you who are late to the Spoonful fan club..try "Butchie's Tune" written by Joey Butler.
I had forgotten about this song. The Lovin Spoonful what a group. So innovating their music.
Brings back so many memories of the 1960's and 1970's. If we could turn back time!

This was the song my husband and I danced to at our wedding. It’s so timeless.
I’m 31 and I was watching this show and this song came on and I caught the line “a quarter of my life has passed.” Kinda trippy you think about. Listening to this song made me wish life was like how my grandpa said it was. This world sucks now. I never lived in the 60’s but I did live in the 90’s and I really miss those days.
It played on the show this is us the other night.

for the great relief of having you to talk to.You are the only comment I have seen that mentions that line. This is one of my favorite songs and that is my favorite lie.
Sung from the heart for sure. The orchestra adds so much too...
I am hopelessly sentimental, and love this sweet song. The comments warm my heart deeply.
heard this song for the first time in 1973 on Slade Alive - good to hear the original, certainly a more gentle approach, nice brass
First heard it in my dorm one late Saturday night and have never forgotten it, along with Six o clock

A beautiful song and probably the only song that uses dawdled and toddled in any song in recorded history. The song, as a whole, expresses my feelings exactly.
My fave 60's band! I saw John Sebastian here in SF at the Venetian Room at the Fairmont Hotel. He had the Dick Bright orchestra behind him and they did the most incredible full orchestra version of this. It was heart stopping.
These guys were frickin' brilliant. John Sebastian made so many pop masterpieces.
Wonderful instrumental for its time... truly great melody .........It’s ok to shoot for the moon.......A truly great band
