It's about his grandfather, and how he treated his mom. So he felt the need to give his mom the love she never got from her own father. Her mom and his grandfather never got along until 5 or 6 years before he died.
One of the most underrated bands. So sad that people do not appreciate what real music is. I love The Fray!!

this is the kind of song that you can just put on, lay down and forget about the rest of the world. it always brings me to tears but i still find it comforting in some way.

It's a shame here in India this band isn't as popular, this is rare and genuinely good music in today's electronic/autotune generation.

I tirelessly listen to this wonderful song, lyrics that hurt, but a melody and harmony that comforts!! I love this band, they are incredible, today at 41 years old, I have the same wonderful feeling as when I was 27 years ago at the release of this majestic song!! I am infinitely grateful for this wonderful song!!

This song has so prolific with so many layers it's not a joke. At first glance it could be seen a profound song about dealing with a girl with daddy issues and her emotional abuse suffered from a father disappointed in a having a girl/s not a boy/s. Then he reveals he's talking abt his mom and subsequently grandma and it's a commentary on how ur parents psychology can inform how u date aswell (every man grows up to marry his mother) so it could be abt a gf and or his mom and the line where he says breathing comes in pairs is a reference to the grandpas death (one begins on ones goodbye) his grandpa 'left'..... and mom have to be an adult now. she began...but left broken.

Probably the best lyrics I've ever listened to, Isaac is a genius.
I remember listening to this song few yrs ago. 4 yrs( I think ) or 3 yrs ago... everytime I hear this, my mind gets so peaceful and calm.

Honestly, one of the best things about The Fray is that they sound amazing without the autotune and effects pop artists today must use to sound even somewhat decent. Isaac sounds amazing on stage and in recordings, and I love that about this band.

@Marilou3000 that song is to his mother who's father was absent. he feels the pain and the pain he had he could put it into words and into a beutiful song. i think he just doesn't feel but he also travels back in time.
