    Great review! I’m in my final year at Swinburne and I’ve definitely enjoyed the experience. For leadership and career development opportunities it’s been great. Still lots of improvement to go but as you said for a young uni it’s doing incredibly well. Even though I’m Malaysian and there is a campus here, I really want to go overseas to meet new people and be in a new environment! I am deliberating to opt for on-campus accommodation. Greetings, Rob. Hope you've been well for the past few days.
    I'm from Indonesia and I recently got accepted by Swinburne as a PhD candidate in the field of civil engineering, specifically in structural engineering and structural health monitoring. Just applied for my student visa yesterday and I hope it gets accepted soon.
    Swinburne definitely wasn't my first choice when looking at Australia as a destination for my next step in getting a masters or even a PhD, especially when compared to the likes of UNSW, Unimelb, USyd, UWA, and ANU, but how mistaken I was. Swinburne, it turns out, has a very good work-integrated learning programme for undergrads, and even in postgraduate research, the collab between academia and industry is very strong that one is actually not only doing pure academic research, but also getting good experience and exposure on the practical side of things.
    That said, COVID-19 has derailed most of my plans and I'm left wondering if I'm gonna be able to enter Australia by March, my proposed date for commencing my candidature. Luckily, I got a job at a local contractor so for the moment, I have something I can do.

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  Před 3 lety +1

      You’re allowed to work 20 hours per week as an international student.
      If you earn $25 an hour that gives you $500 before tax (and maybe $350-400 after tax).
      Take out your rent (guessing about $250-300 a week) and food and you’ll be pretty much even.
      But then you’ve got to consider everything else you might need to spend - like transport, fun, travel, uni equipment etc. So it’ll be tight.
      In order to get your student visa you’ll need to show proof of funds in advance. If you’ve got those saved up, and work while you’re here, you should manage just fine.

    For any potential swinburne students, you will need to CHASE the work integrated learning. Also keep in mind pathways can stop you from accessing it as Diplomas can take up the elective credits that WIL uses. It changes from course to course, but with my area of criminal justice and criminology it was mentioned once during orientation and never again.

      hadi zaidi ah! This is a good question!
      Firstly, I’d say look up the QILT website - qilt.edu.au
      On it you can see graduate survey information for discipline areas for every university. It won’t show you that specific degree but it will show you a business degree from Swinburne.
      Secondly I’d say that any degree from an Australian university can potentially land you a job...depending on the OTHER things you do outside of the degree.
      Employers aren’t just interested in degrees these days. Even an MBA doesn’t guarantee you’ll get exactly the job you want (though it will help, of course).
      So I say you should ALSO think about the things you want to do outside the classroom that will contribute to your employability.
      Volunteering, overseas study, leadership courses, skills courses (like software, design thinking etc), part time jobs you’ve had etc etc.
      With so many people now holding degrees it’s these “other” things that truly make you stand out.
      So think about those too, not just what degree/uni.

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  Před 5 lety +11

      Thanks for the reply @goodfilmful. I've tried very hard to be "balanced" in these videos.
      For example, in this video you'll hear me note that the library is not as good as other university libraries in Melbourne, whilst also noting that it is currently being renovated. I would say this is a "balanced" assessment.
      Given that I don't want to create a 30-minute long reviews, I also believe that focusing on positives is more objective than negatives.
      Why?
      Because "strengths" are less subjective. They have to be "proven" in different ways (ranking, reviews, recommendations, evaluations).
      Weaknesses are very subjective. Would it be fair for me to publish a video of one unhappy student talking about a weakness (very subjective) when other metrics show that a university is strong in that particular area (less subjective)?
      Strengths are less likely to go "out of date" quickly, whereas "weaknesses" can be addressed faster (hence putting the video out of date sooner).
      Finally, my personal view is that people should choose a university based on the STRENGTHS of a university that actually SUIT THEM, rather than on "weaknesses".
      For example, if a uni has an awesome business school and you are desperate to study business, it is more useful to hear about the unis that are strong in that area, rather than a single student saying that it has a crappy library.
      You should follow your interests and passions, which are best followed by seeking out the strengths of a university that match those interests, rather than avoiding weaknesses. If you focus on weaknesses in life you can only lose....because you're ignoring the strengths that suit you best.
      Good luck!

    • @ChoosingYourUni
      @ChoosingYourUni  Před 3 lety +5

      I believe that you should pick a uni based on the strengths that align with your our interests and preferences, not on weaknesses of that institution.
      For example, if you are nuts about chess and a small uni has the most amazing chess program in the country, why does it matter that it doesn’t “rank” well? Or that some other element of it is “bad”.
      I believe that focusing on strengths is the best way to help people find unis that are likely to match the things they actually care about. Otherwise the fact a uni has a crappy food, or an older library, might discourage a student from going to a place that actual suits their core preferences.
      Always focus on strengths when choosing a uni. You’ll have to put up with negatives everywhere in life, so might as well get used to it and follow the positives.
