Oh, I know! My high school students always ask me to teach them this because the places they want to go to work have them do it as a part of their interview. I guess in case the machines break 🤷🏼‍♀️It really is easier if you do it with the coins and bills yourself

Think of it this way- you aren't counting the change. You are starting with the amount they owe, then adding change- pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters- until you get to the amount they paid you. Say they owe you $6 and give you a $10. You start counting at 6. Then add 1 (that's 7), add 1 (that's 8), add 1 (that's 9), add 1 (that's 10).

You'll get it the more you do it. I'm rewatching how to count back change, because I haven't done it in a while so I'm brushing up on it lol. I was taught in my school very briefly and then over the years I've been out of practice. It's a good skill to have because you never know when your register is gonna crap out on you and you have to figure it out lol.

Look at it this way. You are NOT figuring out how much change to give, THEN giving it back. You are just starting at the amount OWED by the customer and counting FROM there to the amount the customer gave you. I have no idea how much change I put into their hand, I just know it is the difference between what the owed me and what they gave me. If they owe me $12.50 and give me $15. Start at $12.50. Give 50 cents ($12.50 + 50 cents = $13.) Give $1 (= $14). Give $1 (= $15) There is no mental subtraction whatsoever. It's hard because you just have to trust the math.
