I remember a dude in my unit in Iraq writing “Combat Tested Government Appruved” (no that’s how he spelled it) on his helmet cover. He was an intelligence analyst, never left the FOB or dodged a mortar. As punishment, first sergeant made him wear it that way.
There are only two reasons it was misspelled. He either did it intentionally, or.. well, I don't like demeaning Intel Weenies.
@@SharkOSix ... Maybe. Certainly true after the fact.
The guy was trying to show that he has a sense of humor about himself, and his first sergeant made sure that he had a sense of humor about himself. Hahahah.
@@MisterNi he had one by the end of the tour, especially considering that was only like the second time he ever wore the helmet. One time when we flew in, and one time when we flew out. “Combat tested”. He heard the boom when the gate got shot at. Once.
@@GlurglePop Weird that someone would shoot the gate at a base on purpose. Someone overlooking the base would be much better off if no one knew he was there. Unless that was an attempt at intimidation to warn not to leave the base. Something that doesn't work too well on infantry types. 😄
Blood wings absolutely happen. I was an Airborne Combat Engineer, completing in Oct 2008. After our 5th jump, completing Airborne school. The Cadre pin your jump wings during the official ceremony. Then, turn a blind eye to unofficial and against regulation to getting your blood wings. Where the backs of the Airborne wings badge are removed and punched into your chest. It is absolutely a right of passage. And if you didn't get your blood wings in Airborne school and you are assigned to an Airborne unit. You will get your blood wings from your new unit, most likely.
My favorite MRE when i was in the Army was beef stew, which came with a vanilla cake, fruit punch mix, chocolate covered raisins and pretzel sticks. It also came with coffee, creamer, sugar, utensils, TP, alcohol wipes, gum and toothpicks. Honestly the most filling MRE.
Mine used to be chili Mac but they redid the meals so now mine is chicken burrito bowl
Because the army MREs are always the best compared to home cooked food unless it’s mother or fathers cooking or of course GRANDMAS COOKIN.
Life as a soldier: boredom, hungry, thirsty, sore, tired and occasionally scared.
Sleepless
Anger, frustration and sometimes sickness and injury
Don’t forget the occasional rage fit.
If you want to make an impact, aim straight for the throat. On your own terms.
Basically be like Captain Price. Get things done your own way.
And pissed off!
30 vacation days sounds like a lot, until you realize, you only get to see your family and friends, 30 days a year. The other 335 days a year, you’re alone.
and your command may not let you take leave or go below X amount of days.
If allowed to take it as the pre pre pre ARTEP training is the same time you want leave
If you don't have friends in your unit wth are you doing? My best friends I made in the service, not seeing family sucks sometimes, but friends change over the years.
@@codyscott999 in my first unit, I had plenty of friends. Then one commited suicide and two were murdered, to say nothing of the guys who transfered out. Once I got to my next unit, I only made one friend. He later turned out to be a bit of a monster.
It's been over ten years now since I got out of the army and I don't keep in contact with any them. Those few I did keep in contact with, well... I suppose. I could always get back on Facebook and try and restart a connection, but at this point it feels like a cold call.
My story is by no means unique.
Meanwhile my barracks room in the Marines: full of black mold and air filtration from the 70s

20:50 I can confirm that the butt tap and "Welcome to the Family" is not always known about ahead of time. I've seen some surprised brides in my time, and in my experience they actually find it a bit more endearing when it doesn't seem planned.
I heard my friend cry, and he sank to his knees, coughing blood, as he screamed for his mother. I fell by his side, and that's how we died, clinging like kids to each other. As I lay in the mud, and the guts and the blood, and I wept as his body grew colder. I called for my mother, but she never came, but it wasn't my fault, and I wasn't to blame. And that's how it is for a soldier..
Are you referencing the Sabaton cover that just released or the original Motörhead?
Based Sabaton/Motorhead.

yeah, those burn pits had some fun "side effects" that were less than ideal for those tasked with over-watching them.
Piano burning is also used in Canada and it happens because in WW1, fighter piolets would have to learn the piano to have the dexterity to fly the planes. After they got their wings they wouldn’t have to play again so they burn a piano.
The Army did blood rank as well when you become an NCO or pass a certain school such as Airborne, SF, sniper training etc. I still have the scars and I’m damn proud of them as I worked hard to earn them. People need to stop being such nancies.
Scary thing is that while the fascists (i.e. government controlled corporations) are working hard at all levels to feminize America, China is doing the opposite and is pushing a campaign all over their nation to make their men more masculine. What do you think the end result of that combo will be?
Yea if the people who had it done to them wanted it done and are proud of it, the problem is only in the eyes of people looking on at it, not a part of it, and being offended on behalf of someone else
I'm offended! J/k I didn't get blood rank when I became an NCO, but I did when I earned my Airborn Wings. Those were my blood wings; I never wore them again and kept them safe. I'm not superstitious, but I will not be the one they point to as proof that its real. lol
For infantry we got blood cross rifles? I'm pretty sure they were cross rifles, but air assault didn't do anything. Hopefully some places keep the blood whatever going.
Well greatly appreciated fellows throughout the 4th military week of said April! Splendorous goldbricked men y'all.
You worked so hard on this one today!!
I would not be surprised if the pillow fight turned into a campus-wide free-for-all, involving the staff, using any weapons they can find. They split up into factions, dominating different parts of the school.
I tried an MRE with thermal pack. Very good. I was actually pleasantly surprised at the quality of the meal.
Hey Simple History, do you think one of these days you could make a video on the Battle of Mogadishu?
I’ve seen the video made by The Operations Room, which is really good, but I also wanna see your take on it.

Lol we showered maybe once every 2 weeks in Iraq if we were lucky enough to go back to the fob. A lot of us came back with skin conditions like chronic hives
That’s disgusting man. Our government should’ve taken so much better care of you guys. Thanks for your service.
(Laughs in Victory) I am sorry to hear that, Buddy. Thank yiu for helping keep things in perspective. That said, I would've gladly stayed in Iraq then have to go back to garrison in Fort Drum.
@Bradley E too be fair, when you're fighting in an austere environment. You simply can't get access to showers or hot chow. Especially if you're the first unit operating in the area. It's just the nature of the beast. That will never change as long as we are waging wars with each other.
Two week + not showering is common
@17:26
One of my old Army Units would "Blood Wing" the E-4
All E-4's and NCO who put them on, and any Other NCO's or Higher. E-3 And Below, was not allowed to participate in smacking our rank on the collar.
Surprisingly everyone in the unit wanted to get to E4 but but didn't enjoy the day.. but it was looked back on i think by most in a form of like "Reverence".. or I made it, or "Brotherhood", it encourages I think that you try to get E-4..
I was fond of reaching that point.
The animation for these is getting better and better
New MREs don't have the little tobasco bottle anymore. It's a sealed pack of "Red Pepper Vinegar". I've got a couple around here somewhere.

That latrine scene in Jarhead shows just how much the military cares about hygiene.

On the subject of traditions, you should have mentioned the VMI tradition of naming the cadets who lost their lives at the Battle of New Market.

Blood wings applied to any service for parachute wings, air assault wings, and I guess whatever wings the Air Force has. Everyone in my unit got blood wings and then did push-ups on the red log. Good times 😂
This is amazing, do you think you could do something about the balloon busters, as they destroyed loads of German blimps in ww1, and it is quite cool. Have a great day everyone!

2:50; “Potable” water, not “portable” water. It means water that is safe to drink/ingest. Easy mistake as Potable isn’t a word that is used very much.
Most of the WWII weapons used during vietnam were confiscated from NVA cachès and taken from NVA soldiers as they were often purchased from countries that had these left over from WWII stockpiles. The main weapons that were shipped to US soldiers from home were handguns and knives, not rifles and automatic weapons. When I was in during Desert Storm, we weren't allowed to keep any weapons, empty casings and usually captured knives and bayonetes, although quite a lot found their way back to the states.

Yeah, those are some good times when that soldier, that one soldier, gets placed on weapons guard at the vault and the SGT's scratch their heads as to why that soldier was chosen. Or when they show up without a haircut and during the barbershop trip they come in 30 minutes late without telling the SGTs leading to everyone watching a normally calm NCO smoke them and their class.
