My grandfather and elementary teachers used to make us practice hand writing and it was part of final grade through dictation and notebooks submission. We used to write like this. They pounded into us that handwriting is first impression of us to others. So we students used to pride ourselves for having beautiful handwriting.

I have bought many expensive books on calligraphy, but what really worked was the John Rubeus method. 3 bucks on amazon...before I knew it I was writing like I was from the 18th century. Cool..
