This was one of the most unrealistic yet legit badass movies I've ever seen. The sword fights were filmed well and some of the bro action going on was pretty awesome.
His men falling over from dehydration & exhaustion, brutal-looking sandstorm coming, Publius passed out in the wagon... and Lucius STILL doesn't call a time-out. Dude is hard-core.

@@CharDhue bro the Roman Empire was extremely strict and didn’t have such a structure in its military. Anyone who showed promise succeed and nobility didn’t exist until it was converted into the Holy Roman Empire. It was just rich merchants and people of influence and people who rose in the military. They also had a strict military structure and your kid wouldn’t last long if he got a position from money alone. I mean they publicly executed many legionaries and legates for failure caused by their own incompetence.

Best part in this movie was when the kid sang and the legion sang with him. That part gave me chills

Believe it or not, Cusack is actually legit.
I would imagine one of the reasons why he got this role in China was due to being Benny "The Jet" Urquidez student for 20 years, and is an accomplished martial artist himself. Benny and Jackie have had a working relationship since the 70s, and having an American Star would have made this film more popular.

one thing i always liked about this film was the romans werent push overs when it came to fighting. Like they avoiding the typical ah you barabaric westerners are so out of your league bc of our mystical kung fu. They for the most part are always evenly matched in combat and even are given credit for being superior engineers

Lucius was clearly stronger...he tied with Hou-An despite the fact that he and his men were so tired and starved that some of them were literally falling from their horses or couldn't stand up..
The fightscene is so good, sound and choreography is amazing.
everything is fictionally fantasized there's nothing to get angry about historical details, it's just a chinese typical fantasy-like action movie.
Actually there are accounts of Romans reaching Liqian and mixing with the locals there, acting as bodyguards for the Han along the Tibetan border.

I think in this context they arent really trying to kill each other. several times they each have spots they couldve ended it but its more like a "I got you" hit vs a youre dead hit
I mean if the movie was realistic it would've been completly different, the gladius was not a cutting weapon, nor a duelist one, it was a thrusting weapon made for the roman legion's heavy formations.
Still amazing scene tho.

While the movie is silly, bizarrely paced, and at times questionable with the story, Its still fun, and I appreciate that they place both western and eastern combat styles on somewhat equal footing and not just have this be an eastern martial arts is superior to everything else kinda film.

'.' Jackie Chan kinda should get in stunt doubles these days, imo, everyone gets old eventually, & he's slowing down quite a bit now.
Roman general is a man. Eventhoigh of dehydration he still dominion the fight
the movie is fun to watch .
The "Roman" armor does not look like Lorica segmentata, or Lorica hamata. It has the ideal shape of a Lorica segmentata. But miss some key points of what gave it the edge over most armors. But most importantly, nobody seems to be wearing any form of plating on their back. Even the small plate seen in the movie would not hinder the wearer much if worn on the back and front. And I see no excuse for why the romans have no plating on their back. The only up about the armor is that unlike other movies, it's not made of butter. And this scene is very pleasing if i ignore the fact of missing backplates and how the Roman legionnaire (I think) is fighting without a shield
-Lorence Fillers- it's a sword on sword duel. The reason for lack of armor and weapons and shields is because in the movie they are essentially a rogue roman legion who left to protect the boy in the wagon

Come down it’s just a movie. No body knows except the soldiers at that era how they fought and if the duals were fair. No body from this time was there. Everything is base on assumptions! Of course unless historians have a time travel machine and they went there to witness a fight. Have guys ever play or used the telephone game? Now think about in this case it’s been thousands of years... 😂

Roman sword is not designed for slashing like what is performed in this movie. It is designed mainly for thrusting.
You have a roman sword with no shield, no way you can win against european long-sword of katana because both weapons has far more reach than you have.
Roman used to fight in very tight group, with big shield, so they need their sword to be short and compact. You can not do a huge swing when you are in formation, it could easily heart the soldier next to you.
In battle, the group of roman soliders moves like a tank advancing forward, getting closed to the enemy and starts thrusting.
In short, Roman sword is tailored for their formation and tatics. It is not a good choice for one on one duel, unless you have a very high level of skill.

true, gladius makes a perfect tandem with the shield, alone would be in dissadvantage, however, roman tribunes didn't have shields and used gladius alone in duels/battle, using it for stabbing and slashing as well. They were of course very skilled, weaponery being a part of their education from childhood (being from aristocratic families). Also their gladius were merely a kind of semi-spatha, longer than gladius used by legionnaries (this is the part not accurately presented in the movie). For example the replicas made to the sword of julius Caesar usualy have like 83-85cm (i don't remember right now exactly), anyway, over 10cm longer than a legionnaire gladius. Even in this case, most likely the main technique was closing the gap to nullify the reach advantage of your enemy and practically to jam him. I you like, is a kind of Mike Tyson peek a boo, beating the much taller opponents from inside out.
Duc Phan there are historical records of the Gladius being used in slashing motions. They would use it to chop through forests and such when they would conquer other territories in Central Europe
Also their armor and helms are very different

I'm sure John Cusack didn't do the majority of those moves here but there were some close up shots of him doing moves that were unmistakenly him. Which is badass. I never took John Cusack as that kind of a badass. Adam Brody gets a pass (Predator) but man, I've seen this scene a handful of times and not ONCE did I go "Oh snap! It's John Cusack". These aren't his roles. Found out it was him through IMDB and that was AFTER I was already 10 minutes into the movie. Thought it was a look-alike.

Probably actually was supposed to be bread-eating guy. This is a Chinese movie so he was probably speaking Mandarin and they dubbed over it here for the English version. At least that's my guess.
