We "learned" this poem in class (Primary 5, aged ~8) in 1967 and I still remember much of it (which is how I was able to search for it on Google). At the time I thought how ridiculous it was that no-one would notice such a being in the class, and why were they even in the class anyway? We even had to draw the "writer", and I remember thinking how odd and unlikely it was to be asymmetrical with respect to limbs, eyes etc. and the improbable distribution of the 17 fingers and toes amongst the (5+2=) 7 limbs irked my scientific thinking even then! It was MANY years later that I realised I should have drawn a child day-dreaming at the back of the class! At what age to children "get" this?
