You're the OG of 5.7... got out of it almost 10 years ago due to shortages and now back in. And you're still going strong. Great stuff. Might need to get on your Patreon asap!
It would be very much appreciated :)
Great review, very happy that someone besides FN is making brass, greater supply will hopefully translate to lower cost. Thanks!
Indeed!
You just can't beat the thoroughness of his testing anywhere on CZcams.
Good science with presentation excellence...Thank you.
Thank you very much!!
Especially considering he specializes in a particular caliber. He does other but this is his bread and butter. I havenât seen that elsewhere. They test so many different rounds that it gives them a little bias. Buffman is the 5.7 goat
FN with he 5.7x28 has the same issue that Alexander Arms has with the .50 Beowulf. If they would just come off of the restrictive nature of ammo manufacturing, they would be much better off by making the rounds more readily available, which would help lead to increased sales in the firearms and components in general.
Careful calling it .50 Beowulf. He might come after you :) - But exactly your point :$
I just picked up a S&W 5.7âŠthank you for all 5.7 content Iâve been binge watching lol đ€đ».
Man I just finished watching thank you! you put so much more information than I expected.
The pleasure is all mine. !
I got some of the second drop. Did a bad video on it myself. Glad to see more 5.7 out there and it will absolutely be my go to 5.7 target load going forward. It will be a while before AAC can ramp up to meet demand, but they'll get there.
This is some of the best wound cavities I have seen in 5.7 Iâm impressed and if it runs really well I would carry this if I had a 5.7 pistol
I been waiting for you to test this ammo. Thank you!
Thank you for the thorough testing and closing thoughts. That's a lot of good information. I've pretty much decided I want to go with AAC ammo. I want it hot.
I want to thank you for your focus on 5
.7x28. I'm happy to see a new source for cases.
I do wish ammo makers would stop trying to duplicate SS197. Please someone switch gears and drop bullet weight and get velocity up to 2,000 fps plus out of an FN FiveSeven.
Has anyone tried loading something more like Hornady 36 gr. Varmint Grenade? A step in the right direction at least.
What I'd really like to see is SS198 +P.
Not everything could handle it but all my .38s and 9mms aren't up to +P loads and ammo makers seem OK trusting me to use some discretion in selecting what I feed my guns.
Again that you and keep up the good work.
This, literally exactly this.
The 36gr varmint grenade would IMO not be a good bullet choice for 5.7 as it may do poorly against barriers or not be deep penetrating enough. I would think a better designed 198 bullet would be ideal. I agree I want to see a sub 34gr 2000 fps load.
Well it's barnes varmint grenade and I have been loading these in 5.7 for about year-but stopped selling them recntly
I recently posted about a dozen videos of various gel-tests from the Ruger 57. LC will be next couple weeks. The 36 VG did basically nothing but turn backwards at 1949 fps. Hopefully it will open up at rifle velocities. But several other projectiles did very well. The 40 gr VMAX being one of them. Although my velocity eclipses these factory rounds (1981 fps).
Love how you do your reviews. Thanks for the info and your time.
My pleasure!
Thanks for sharing the information on new sources of ammo.
You are most welcomed!
Great work, appreciate your attention to detail.
The pleasure is all mine.
Excellent! I was lucky enough to get 500 of these ordered, they arrived today. Great review!
Awesome! Thank you!
Outstanding video. In a class of your own.
Thank you!
Great work as always man.
Man, I just bought some to test out-- otherwise I would've hit that affiliate link. My PS90 has never been picky with the Federal AE, but always good to have options. Awesome review sir
Great work, Thank you!
You are most welcomd!
Awesome! Finally more manufactures of brass!
Right on!
Perfect middle of the road plinker.
This is great news. Thanks for the exhaustive detail, better you than me!
You are most welcome D:
Iâm really looking forward to 5.7 offerings from AAC will be buying from them in the future hopefully from now on if they can keep up stock
Your videos are great, man. Thank you for the information!
Glad you like them!
Great content, as always!

I got the smith 5.7. Itâs an amazing shooting pistol.
Nice man! Just picked up my first 5.7x28 pistol....yup, the M&P 5.7! Saw this AAC 5.7 from PSA yesterday...need to snag some.
Nice. I just ordered the S&W too.
how is the ejection pattern? how do the shoulders look compared to unfired cartridges?
Great review!

I think s&w would consider you. Send a customer support token, with a few links to your awesome stuff, and they may just want to get on board with someone that destroys armor for fun. As always, stay safe, stay warm, the Midwest is wild. And we, your viewers, adore you.
I sent them an email to their media contact back in Jan with no response. I had a good industry friend contact their PR firm, who then contacted them on my behalf, and there was no response. She did say the gun was in high demand for review, and I get placed on the side a lot because of my lack of subs/views. I contacted them again today, but figured at this point, I'm losing out on review time, and just bought one myself..
@@BuffRANGE that kinda sucks. I mean, at least PSA/JJE is in your corner. And what they're doing these days is nothing short of awe inspiring
And there some lame assn reviewers getting comped. Your content is the best!
I wasn't happy with the velocity of the original but this looks close to where it should be. I am re-interested with the re-issue.
I bought some of these from the first batch and wasn't impressed. Because of this video I ordered 10 more. OK speeds for a sporting round. My P90 will get a lot more range time.
Bro- this ammo is so sick. Been shooting it a bit and Iâm getting tight groups from my PSA ROCK at about 30 yards.
Good to hear!
I just purchased some myself. Do you carry it for self defense?
I have a few boxes arriving today, good to know.
You're lucky
Great video! Iâve been curious about the velocity of 5.7, particularly in the 16â barrel length compared to the pistols
You are very welcome!
Great review. The cases look identical to Vanguard Outfitters new cases. Is there a connection??
Thank you for all of that good work!............................elsullo
You are most welcomed.
10.4 inch barrel is the sweet spot for this ammo. tiny 22 bullet but terminal effectiveness is not less than 9mm
Agreed. 10" barrel is ideal in 5.7 :D
Love to pick your brain about reloading as well đ
Salutations!
Question: Do you know of any .308 rounds that go 55gr 5.56 speeds but obviously with heavier bullets? I see one video on your channel about an aluminum one, but was wondering if there was other options out there more traditionally made out copper+lead, or just copper. Even higher marks if it's a defensive/mushrooming round.
PS
Hello from California where the handgun roster was gutted and we may be able to finally get handguns designed in the last decade. Would love an M&P 5.7 with a red dot and a light for home defense / I'm on the toilet gun haha. It would rock my socks even more if they made binary triggers for them, which let's be real; The 5.7 round basically begs for amiright? (Those also banned in CA for the time being, of course) OR something with the AN-94's mechanism that fires 5.7 and has a good barrel length to overall length ratio.
I don't care who's running the market, as long as it's plentiful, priced well, and runs
You would not like an ambidextrous mag release on the LC Carbine, it makes you accidentally drop the mag all the time, I took mine off and put the push button mag release
Please tell me more
I just bought some AAC 5.7x28 ammo, because the price was quite reasonable at $25/box of 50. However... shooting this ammo through my PSA 5.7 Rock proves to be difficult. The ammunition doesn't cycle correctly. At first, I thought that it might be low charge for cost savings. However... here's what I personally think is happening after reloading it. As opposed to the Federal American Eagle ammo... this ammo is a lot tighter in the resizing die. Like to the point of having to heavily lube nearly every case. I actually busted the extraction ring off of three of them while running through a mixed lot of 50 rounds. With this said... I think that the case is slightly oversized and is getting stuck in chamber. Due to the tight fit... the gun runs a high likelihood of failing to extract. At the end of the day... I reached out to Palmetto and told them about the issue. I'm still awaiting feedback, but based on how responsive and VERY COOL they've been in the past... I wouldn't be surprised if they offered either a refund for the rounds I bought from them, and/or looked into the issue a bit deeper.
The coating is the reason they don't work very well in dies. I've noted this since RRWS used almost the same coating. I would say that it's possible you received a lot of ammo that could be on the higher end tolerance wise, but to flip it around maybe your barrel is on the tighter end tolerance wise?
@@BuffRANGE ... It could be a barrel tolerance thing, but it's odd that the gun and the ammo made for the gun by the same exact company, wouldn't cycle properly. The ammo was likely sourced to a supplier that had to meet the specs of the gun itself, to avoid any issues like this. It's honestly pretty unacceptable. As far as the coating making it difficult... if this is the case, they shouldn't have stated that it's capable of being reloaded in the description. Part of the reason I bought these was because finding used 5.7 cases is rather difficult. I now have quite a few potentially unusable cartridges for reloading. Pretty bummed to be honest.
@@footnotedrummer It's not like slips in QC are unheard of. Maybe your barrel was made at the end of a tool's life? EFK had a batch of MKIII FSN barrels that missed a polish job and were having issues.
As far as the coating goes, I made this short 10 months ago: czcams.com/users/shortsuND_IjYrReg?si=m1WueVRcxpM4LJXi, and there are various discussions pre-dating AAC's use of this coating and the efforts/process change needed to re-size it. What dies are you using? I've found the most success with Lyman dies, and I still need lanolin oil on the AAC or other cases using the black coating :D
@@BuffRANGE ... yeah... I get it. However... I'm not the only person with this issue. There's a video out there showing another guy using two different Rock barrels (one threaded and one non-threaded. Both of these barrels accepted the Federal rounds without issue, but both took issue with the AAC. He also noted that not all of the AAC didn't fit correctly. He also checked the AAC with two different, precision cartridge gauges and both of those took slight issue with the AAC. No issue with Federal. He also had an M&P 5.7 that accommodated the AAC much better than the PSA Rock. This is really odd, and I think PSA should go back and take a look at the chamber size of the Rocks, and size the tooling slightly larger like the M&P. This would alleviate the issue for cycling, but would still leave reloaders with a risk of breaking extractor lips off during sizing.
@@footnotedrummer I'm certainly not disagreeing with you. PSA needs to maintain the utmost highest QC possible on 5.7. They are doing the Ammo and gun without the involvment of FN, which would have incurred licensing fees. So there could be stuff that PSA/AAC is discovering as use increases. You and I personally shouldn't be those beta testers, but you know how that goes.
Me personally, I don't mess with the AAC/VG/RRWS brass for reloading because of the need of extra lube. If you're having troubles finding 1x brass, I'd suggest following me on FB, as typically I sell my 1x brass a couple times of year by the 1000s. Or you can buy unprimed (resize need) 5.7 FN brass from AR:
americanreloading.com/product/5-7-x-28-fnb-unprimed-brass-250ct/
I've got a couple boxes and they do have a greasy feel to them. Haven't gotten to the range yet. After firing, is there any signs of buildup in the chamber or magazines?
Haven't noticed anything yet.
About the same as the Fiocci loading. I was hoping for something a little hotter. I'm going to have to load my own with some reloader 7.
This is faster than the Fiocchi loading. The hyperformance load is = ss197sr
@@BuffRANGE Fiocci was 2117 FPS in your test, this averaged less than 20 FPS faster out of the LC Carbine.
@@billy56081 True but the Fiocchi was only done in 30F warmer temps. So you're still looking at more umph in this load at less cost :D
@@BuffRANGE All good, I am trying to work up a coyote load for my LC carbine that sends a 35 to 40 grain bullet 2400 FPS safely. I think reloader 7 might get me there. I have reloaded for the 22 Hornet for years and it has the same case volume but lower max pressure. I think that the Hornet is faster because you can use slower powders with the locked breech actions it is in.
@@BuffRANGE all of the SS197 velocities I have gotten are higher than these - not by much, but definitely higher (2180 - 2216 fps through the LC) - albeit in warmer temps. But I don't see anything to indicate these are actually faster - since I don't have snow-temps to shoot in. They seem to be pretty much the same-ish.
While Iâve only watched about 6-8 of your videoâs, itâs readily apparent you ARE the 5.7 man, lol. I subscribed after watching a few.
I do have a question though, why not do the usual denim/shirt material gel tests instead of the bare gelatin? Would that not be a more realistic approach? Also, the armor penetration tests donât seem to be a realistic scenario for the majority of people. If youâve explained in another video about all this, I apologize.
Anyway, excellent videoâs and keep up the good work.
Typically with smaller diameter pointed bullets, denim/clothing isn't needed per say as the bullets don't get clogged up by them.
As for the armor, the 5.7's claim to fame is it's ability to poke soft armor. Those who learn more understand that ability is not guaranteed amongst all 5.7 flavors. When possible I use that as a barrier to show performance aspects of some 5.7 loads :D
@@BuffRANGE That all makes perfect sense, thank you for responding, I appreciate it.
No armor test? I am hoping to see how it does compared to SS198LF.
It's ability to penetrate soft armor doesn't start until you get to about 2050-2100 fps, which from the AAC would be the 10" barrels. Even then a lot of newer offerings using UHMWPE stop this round as well as SS198LF
czcams.com/video/XfMUp_nkCAQ/video.html
So PSA rock non threaded to threaded barrel we can expect plus 50 fps?
Yeah about 70 fps+
Iâve had a different result. My speeds were the same but Iâve had tons of malfunctions. At least 10 out of one box of 50. Shot out of a FN FiveseveN and a ps90.
I noted in some of your videos you had cycling issues with the Fiocchi 62gr too. How many rounds are down range in your guns? When is the last time you've ever used a 9mm brush and carb cleaner to clean the chamber really good?
@@BuffRANGE 62gr gave me fits when suppressed (in the process in getting a new spring, guess EFK doesnât make them anymore) Less than 1000 rounds, canât remember the last time I gave them a detailed cleaning.
I have 1 box left of AAC, Iâll give the FiveseveN a good cleaning and see if that helps with cycling. Yesterday I had a malfunction every pull for about 5-6 in a row. Of course I had a new GoPro mount that mounts on the front rail so could see the malfunctions but I called it out each time.
I had about 3 of them not chamber after an empty mag by just hitting the slide release.
How does this ammo run in a sbr ps90? Any issues FTE FTL, issues with the coating? Other then the few rounds fired at 9 mins in the video. Also does AAC have any data on use of this ammo in a p90 or sbr ps90?
So far so good but too early to tell.
Didnât even see the release đđșđž
13:10 & 16:41 - the camera is focusing splendidly on the tape-measure. ha!
I searched your channel for gel-test of the SS197 and couldn't find one. Do you have one posted that I am missing?
I don't think I've ever tested it, only watched others. I had a meat target from years ago.
@@BuffRANGE I had seen the shoulder video and found it as intriguing as I recall the pooch did. I hadn't see gel video until a couple months ago and gun dungeon did shoot into it from a ROCK but used denim (good test, of course, but wanted to see bare 1st). He got 1660, 1642, and 1602 (1635 avg!!!) fps...so, yah. If his chrono isn't off, that may mean they also slowed new stuff down by over 100 fps. My LOTs average ~1760 fps from R57. Prior to his video, I was never able to find one. I uploaded this week with a velocity of 1981 fps from my R57.
ââŠneed to be coated in blowback guns because it allows our shoulder to bump forward vs stretching the entire case out and potentially ripping the neck offâŠâ is this what it is? All Iâve heard was it helps them feed better. Maybe a steeper shoulder angle, if it wouldnât hurt feeding. If thatâs the whole issue, why didnât they use more robust brass, I wonder
What group do think he would have shot had he not been drinking? 1.004 ainât bad đ
Nice to see you testing new ammo out in all that "Global Warming" Goodness. Great job!
Sure could use some warming right now.
Have you ever tested 22 TCM ammo from Rock Island Armory?
Long time ago against armor.
Could this ammo be used for self defense?
If you don't have BDF, T6B or S4, yes. It may not excel at barrier penetrations, but the increase in velocity helps it over SS197SR.
I get the 5.7 pistol but it's silly not to use 5.56 on anything larger than a 5in pistol less power and higher cost
How many Jaffa have you taken out with that fn p90?
Iâm not allowed to talk about it.
I don't see a contact link on your site. How do I DM you for the download?
If you hit the about page there is a "business inquiries" section and the email can be revealed in there. Or I'm on FB and IG, those work too.
Does any one make a good copper hollowpoint like a barnes tsx for the 5.7x28mm???
Yeah RR WS has a R37X.
If copper needed, Barnes makes bullets that can be loaded for 5.7 x 28...not sure if it meets your requirement of just like TSX...but also, Hornady NTX 35 gr, Hammer-Shock Hammer 33 gr (I didn't try their 35 gr Hammer Hunter), Lehigh 32 Controlled Chaos (also tested 38 gr which is currently discontinued), Cutting edge has a few also. I have recent videos posted of gel w/the pistol might help choose an option. I just got 3 Cutting Edge bullets that I didn't have yet when I tested, so those will be next.
If you are talking about completed rounds, the Vanguard GPM 36 gr looks to be all copper, but I wouldn't say it really performs like a traditional hollow-point. Video posted of that, too.
I've been waiting since December for my R&R order to be sent...so it might be a while before you can get your hands on any of their stuff. I don't see R37X listed any longer đ
Do the night sights on your FN 5.7 your using for this test co-witness with the red dot? If not, any reason you didn't go with the suppressor height night sights from elite ammunition instead?
They donât and the skyscrapers he created IMO way too tall.
better than having no co-witness in case your red dot goes out in a fight then you're in trouble with no ability to aim@@BuffRANGE
@@tihnsorfjw Unless those skyscrapers hang up during draw, or don't fit in your holster. All in all, if the dot goes down, there is some ability to point shoot through the window but of course not precision. I just don't feel the juice is worth the squeeze. You'll need an MRD to get co-witness.
For sure. I'd like to see more red dot manufacturers make the prism type handgun optic with the option to turn on a red dot to illuminate the prism, kind of like what Vortex did for the spitfire 1x prism scope but for a handgun, ensuring you're never out of the fight if the dot goes down@@BuffRANGE
All we need now is that they could keep up with demand
They had pumped out 70K of the first initial batch. Just a drop in the bucket, but I imagine as they scale the volume is only going up.
@@BuffRANGE I think if the continue to produce the same quality you experienced, it's only one way but up..
I was really hoping that with the recent NATO's adoption of this round, it's popularity would drive third party production.
@@madmaxd1 NATO's adoption was just really setting a ground work for other countries to produce if the demand arose. No country to my knowledge is now fielding 5.7 in mass. More so think of that announcement as marking fluff. 4.6 was adopted too ;)
@@BuffRANGE It's becoming clear that NATO's round/ammunition adoption, is getting as bad a Nick Cannon having kids..
ââ@@BuffRANGE Go figure.. yesterday I was complaining that PSA didn't have it in stock. Just know I received a notification that they got it back in stock... Bought 300rds..
Thx. Again for your hard work and heads up on this ammo.. Let's see how it runs on my PS90..
Well, it's an improvement over FN SS197.
Hopefully we see a continual improvement and perhaps more speed as time and rounds down range increase.
@@BuffRANGE Not sure how much more they can squeeze out of 40gr v max performance for a bulk consumer load than what they achieved here without running into overpressure problems. It's a bit better performance than FN SS197 and can work as a self-defense load besides just a target round. If they can maintain QC it's a win.
@@BuffRANGE As for a specific self-defense load, I suppose it would need to be in the 31gr - 35gr bullet weight range if you want to get more speed especially out of pistols. But we wouldn't want a bullet weight too light that it shreds apart without sufficient penetration. The other issue is: Are we looking for a general self-defense round that achieves sufficient depth and expansion or are we looking for something with light barrier blind capabilities, that might give up some expansion to defeat light barriers and still achieve sufficient depth? They would probably have to develop 2 additional product lines in 5.7x28 - a general self-defense round and a light barrier blind self-defense round. I'm far from a bullet construction expert so I'm not sure what would be optimal.
@@railfanningpoints2.045 Perhaps consider the Vanguard 36 gr GPM. I posted a video of how that did into gel recently. I have the old Speer Gold Dot, and that worked great, too. But I'm torn as to which to carry. The Vanguard stuff is legit. The new Speer was near worthless in my test. Video for that should be this weekend. I also posted video of this 40 gr VMAX at 1981. I also just bought some that should go faster (off of g*nbroker / DarkestHourDefense)
Good ol spicy .22lr
LOL super Saiyan spicy 22 lr
This AAC VMax is honestly producing thoroughly unimpressive velocities. It is IMO 200fps short of optimal, and 100fps short of acceptable.
Was thinking the same thing. I gave PSA the benefit of doubt thinking they WOULDN'T come out with another anemic 5.7x28 offering. Hell, I'd throw extra money at them if they just loaded this cartridge the way it should be đ€ŠđŒââïž
AS a company would you want to be liable for blowing up someone's gun? I don't know the pressure #s they are achieving, but if it's under max, maybe they should offer a +P variant and a liability waiver for guns like the P50? The 40gr and higher loadings in 5.7 have always been unimpressive.
Ideally this cartridge was designed to sling under 34gr loads in excess of 2000 fps from the pistol. There are only a few loads that meet that category, and I hope we will see more.
You mentioned CMMG doesn't make higher capacity 5.7 mags anymore? Or do you mean the original 40rd mag that had problems?
@@christophersimon5712 But "what is the way it should be"? 5.7 was never designed to shoot 40gr pills. They are a compromise for them to offer a "sporting round". FN's Duty rounds are 28 and 31gr LONG projectiles designed to tumble. I'm curious where individuals are surmising that 5.7 40gr loadings "should be" 2000 fps..
â@@BuffRANGE The way it should be" was meant to be subjective, based on witnessing several other companies that are achieving much higher velocities (with higher grain bullets) without blowing people's guns up. If they can, what's stopping PSA from doing it? You even said it yourself (I don't know where, but it was in a comment section) that rounds like SS197, American Eagle and Fiocchi are anemic and underpowered (I'm paraphrasing). I've seen several videos of 36 grain pills from Vanguard Outfitters doing 2100 FPS out of a PSA ROCK (which for reference is 352 FPE). I never once said that I expected 40 grain bullets to do 2000 FPS out of a pistol (although it would be nice). But is it too much to ask for around 1,900 FPS when there are currently 36 grain rounds on the market doing 2,100?
@@christophersimon5712 Understood, and to that effect I wanted some elaboration (as many posters on AR15.com think that somehow 2050 fps from a 40gr 5.7 is a magic #) . Jay's loads certainly do exceed even these, but you'll note his liability disclaimer for use in the P50, and that some of his loads are barrel/platform specific, because they cause pressure signs.
And I agree. I want another 50-75 fps out of the 40gr load. It seems very doable based on the data we have from EA and VG. I imagine PSA has better testing tools to measure the pressure of these rounds. Are they only hitting 43K psi? Or 45K, 48K psi? I doubt they will tell us. Maybe they will give us a "+P" loading at some point.
Why do the manufacturers seem to be obsessed with 40 grain bullets? Most of what is being offered online is all 40 grain projectiles. IIRC the Five-Seven was originally designed for use with 27 to 33 grain projectiles traveling over 2000 fps out of a handgun. The lighter bullet weights are where the high velocity comes from. IMHO a 40 grain bullet is handicapped velocity-wise...basically "dumbed down" ammo for civilians. The SS198LF is about the only half-decent ammo that can be bought these days. Problem is, you have to be fairly wealthy to afford the ridiculous prices it trades at. So frustrating.
What gel are you using?
This is just standard clear ballistics gel . 10% version. Are you using organic in your shorts?
@@BuffRANGE if by organic you mean food grade gelatin then yes, no idea what percentage (I think Iâm around 20%), I donât have an idea because I worked up a batch to stop a BB 10ft away going about 590/ft per second in about about 3â. Itâs a lot more yellow than I wanted but it works ok.
In my videos from yesterday I realized the imagine was way better from the other side of the block after I moved on from AAC. The first 2 were AAC and itâs about the same as yours. But man malfunctions like crazy.
If I ever get a 5.7 firearm this is what I'm loading it with
They may suffice depending on need or purpose, but if you aren't aware, Vanguard makes some legit rounds. Buffman has done Black-Fang videos, and I just posted one recently of their 36 GPM. I'd say it did pretty well. More $, though.
@@ShastaBean Thanks for the heads up!
can this sabreslick coating hold up to annealing? I have no idea what the stuff is.
Good question. Let me ask.
@@BuffRANGE if you do get your mitts on an M&P 57 I'm also curious about ejection pattern and shoulder movement. I'm really hoping it has low movement and gentle ejection, but I'm just a crazy reloader and most people don't care about that lol.
â@@ironbunny4121True, maybe it'll be better than my Ruger which absolutely mangles casings when it ejects them.
@@iang438 love everything about my PSA Rock, but it yeets cases 20feet and dings every case mouth. I end up shooting my SBR PS90 more just because it has the brass catcher.
when are they making an ss198 clone
They want to make an SD/PP load. They were undecided on bullet design last I checked.
@@BuffRANGE That is good to hear. The whole point of 5.7 is enhanced penetration. I hope they release it asap.
PSA is doing the lords work
Yes indeed. Guns, ammo, parts for everyone :D
I think it would be interesting to see 5.7x28, .22 TCM and .22 Magnum compared head to head in gel from commonly available guns in their respective calibers, Ruger 57, Keltec PMR-30, and Rock Island .22 TCM 1911or similar. Finding defense ammo for .22 TCM besides the Armscor JSP would be impossible though, and I suspect that unfortunately 5.7x28 is going to strangle .22 TCM out of the market in time.
Unfortunately only 1 load exists in 22 TCM. I've tested it, and it has more velocity out of the box than the 40gr 5.7 loads, it's specifically designed around that 1 bullet. If you use longer bullets, you lose case capacity and then the velocity benefits it has to offer. As far as 22 mag goes, currently the best load in that, IMO is the Speer Gold Dot. It had penetration depths shy of the 5.7 Speer GD by a couple inches, but bullet construction was lacking. :D
I just want one company to make one round that is readily available and is cheap enough to be a plinker and have enough performance to work as a small game/marginal SD round.
Looks like this might be the best option we have. Sad as that is.
I don't think that's sad at all. You have an option that isn't being watered down by FN, and that penetrated to adequate depths in gel. I don't go plinking per say with my 9mm EDC load (124 or 147gr HST). IMO cheap bullet designs should be left for plinking and target shooting (depending on the type of target shooting) and typically well designed self defense/pp/le loads carry a premium because of the R&D that went into them to ensure they perform. :D AAC is working on a dedicated SD round last I asked them. Given their ability to VOLUME this load, I would expect it to cost less than EA or Vanguard's offerings. But who knows..
â@@BuffRANGE So you're saying the difference between being "watered down by FN" and not falling under the same category is a whopping 36 FPS?
"You'll see from the ROCK SS197/FN Vmax goes 1,727 fps averaged. The American Eagle TMJ 1,614 fps. The AAC load goes to 1,763 averaged.."
Honestly, if you're suggesting that 40 grain pills from FN are watered down....................this loading from AAC meets that same standard (based on your own findings).
@@BuffRANGE Eh. Itâs still under powered and you know it wonât be consistently in stock. Itâll be PSA vaporware. Iâm hopeful though! And I appreciate you reviewing it.
@@jimyeats I mean they just spun up this line. Their 9, 300BO, 5.56 is staying in stock longer every time it's restocked. Same with their Rock pistols. You can go buy one of various flavors right now.
@@BuffRANGE alright alright. Youâve turned my negativity around.
Do you think this ammo is faster/better than the FN vmax blue tip ammo?
Yes. It was directly compared in this video on the same day. FNâs VMax ammo
Is loaded by Fiocchi USA
@@BuffRANGE Ok gotcha. Thank you again for the information you share with your viewers it's very appreciated
@@BuffRANGE 1 more thing buffman, I went to the range and did some shooting with my five-seven and I was shooting with the 27grain FN hollow which was accurate. Then I shot with American eagle 40gr and the American eagle was shooting like 3-4 inches low. Are u aware of that?
@@daddybone305 yes this is normal even at distances of 7 yards. 27gr grain is 300-400 fps faster than the SS197 and AE TMJ. The 40gr loads will have a different Point of impact on the target..
@@BuffRANGE Oh ok I was curious. Thank u for always responding back.. your the man
How would you compare this to gold dot 40g's?
Speer ruined the Gold Dot. They slowed it over 100 fps and changed the design.
@@BuffRANGE Did not know. So you're preferring the AAC now?
@@neilsmith3986 if you want an expanding round yes. Or RRWS R37X
Total bs. Iâve been on there âin stock alertâ for months and I never get a notification. Thanks for the review!
I usually get notifications if I add them?
I have gotten the notification but out of stock by the time I read email.
Iâm guessing itâs because Iâve got gmail. I canât get MrgunsNgear either. Google is commie
Iâve been waiting for a notification on the 9mm ak for a couple years now.
@@lelandgaunt9985 which variant ?
So all vmax ammo is self defense ammo ?
I wouldnât say so. If the 22 cal Vmax is going the speeds seem here it can provide some expansion and frag while getting to 12+ in gel. If the Vmax is driven at higher velocities then it starts to frag too much and limit penetration.
@@BuffRANGE so vmax 5.7 is not for self defense ?
@@Wu_boy if you get it from AAC or Elite and itâs all you got, yes. But you can buy better loads
@@BuffRANGE I got vmax aac in I had ss195LF
@@Wu_boy then the AAC IMO is Better than 195 because Vmax will go 12â+. 195 wonât. I value penetration first.
All 5.7x28mm should be 27 grain FMJ pushed to 2500 fps. Just like how FN developed it in 1988. Why is this round under powered? Because it can go through a level IIIA vest? To late. Sooo many other rounds can that already. This round has been purposely crippled.
Where did you see him shooting 27gr?
â@@chiefmachining7972nowhere ..that was his point
5.7x28 is such a horrible cartridge
not interested in anything over 30 grains
Not a lot of viable sub 30gr 224 for 5.7 :(
Shit velocities!
Relative to what though? Itâs faster than FN and Fiocchi offerings
still weak
But an improvement and hopefully make it faster
Super weak and disappointing to be quite honest
Hopefully they will improve this load as time and rounds down range goes on
Very disappointing velocities. This does nothing but, harm reputation of 5.7x28.
ACC meet Bud Light? Unacceptable, unless you put warning on box 5.7 Light Velocity. đ€Ź Only for Bud Light can blinking!!! Thanks but, no thanks!!!
What 40gr factory loading is faster?
@@BuffRANGE I shot 5.7x28 before the Federal Gods forbade certain high velocity 5.7
Pressure safety of the 40 grain isn't the issue of this ammo. The nanny state govt is the issue, after Fort Hood. Yes, it was a lighter grain bullet but, platform became a boogie man target. They had to show or, attempt to do something. There been a few commercial loads over the years that pushed well above 1600fpm.
You can still purchase them if found. The SS197SR is a factory commercial round for law enforcement. It's 2000+fps
Even just off the top of my head the 40 grain Speer Gold Dot is 1800fps. Even Fiocchi 40 grain is 1750.
Then there's Nato rounds? We aren't supposed to find those either. Like other things that pour across our Southern border. Even those can be found. It's like everything, laws are only for law abiding. Criminals still purchase & use the smoking stroking ammo against US. It's out there factory or, reloads. It shows how insane our bloated uneducated govt & laws actually are. Another example is: We aren't allowed to purchase factory fresh commercial high velocity rounds for the 5.7 but, we can buy smoking reloads that perform like the original intent of the platform. Made with the same FN casing, just hand loads. đčđ€Ąđ
â@@rss5003 You might want to check your numbers. I've been reviewing 5.7 ammo since before Ft Hood. The numbers have always been about the same.
When 5.7 first came state side, they offered the 40gr Vmax as the sporting round called SS196SR. It averaged around 1,550 fps from the FSN, and had gun reliability issues. It was quickly replaced by SS197SR. It's performance over the years has varied from 1,675-1,750 fps in the pistol.
The original offering Gold Dot was 1,800 fps or so from the pistol. They've slowed it down to almost 1,700 fps. The trend seems to be FN controlled offerings are only getting slower, vs AAC offered something out of the gate that's now the fastest 40gr loading. The Fiocchi 40gr loading is the SXT (same exact thing) as SS197SR because they both.
SS190 from the pistol is around 2,050-2,100 fps. Given time AAC will likely offer a sub 35gr load that will hopefully rival EA's S4 load, and exceed SS198LF.
@@BuffRANGE You might want to recheck your question? You asked what commercial 40 grain ammo is above 1600fps. Off top of my head, I gave example. Just the SS197SR proves my point. You even proved my point with your examples, except for one. Without getting off into the weeds of barrel length or, non-commercial rounds. I'm strictly a handgun 5.7x28 caliber user. I don't own or, desire PS90. In my experience though, it's the only 5.7 I've experienced or, seen reliability issues from ammo.
To me, the round was created too be a high velocity round period! A 40gr 1600fps 5.7x28 round isn't acceptable to me. Other than practice & shooting cans. In my non-guru opinion. It does nothing too promote a very formidable platform or, its intended purpose. The question of improved 9mm ballistics start entering the picture at 5.7 lowered velocity. I also believe the govt just doesn't want civilians too have its performance in our hands. This is my stance! The SS197SR, not mentioning Jay's or, others rounds proves pressure, velocity & reliability isn't a ammo issue.
I love the round, I want it to greatly expand. I personally think it's a better round for defense than 9mm but, with lowered velocity ammo being accepted by users for affordability. Will only hurt the platform. I pay a premium for the platform & performance. Underperforming ammo is a disservice that will only harm the potential & reputation of the 5.7 in the long run.
@@rss5003 I said what 40gr factory load is faster. But you are 100% right. This round was designed for sub 35gr bullets. Long and high velocity. Thatâs what we really need.
If you polish your feed ramp and chamber inside of the barrel that coating becomes redundant
Of course you don't want to use anything abrasive, I use jewelers polish, it just takes the blueing off and makes the metal feel really slick, like its wet
It most certainly is still required. It's helpful to reduce sticking from a dirty chamber, but the coating is still needed. I have polished chamber in my EFK barrel, and the coating is still needed.
@@BuffRANGE I've removed the coating and had no trouble, idk if I removed every bit of it though
@@BuffRANGE polishing definitely helps with feeding and extracting
@@nicoscarfo4486 I have a reloading 5.7 video upcoming where I mentioned removing the case coating, and specifically experimented removing all of the coating and those cases as reported by other as well, cause reliability issues with blowback design guns. Ultimately for me I am baffled as to why someone would undertake MORE labor to remove this coating (because it took dozen of hours for me to remove completely), then to just wash the cases in simple green and move on :D
