Yes.It’s better to make a movie at regional level. If the content is good then all people other than the language which the movie was taken will watch irrespective of language barrier. Then it will become pan India or so. Example is Jaibheem, which was received well all over India eventhough it was released in OTT platform.👍

I really want PS - 1 and 2 to work. And Mani Ratnam and Shankar Sir are first Pan India directors. Most Indians have seen more than 70-80 % of their films, either originally in Hindi or dubbed or remake. I trust Mani Ratnam, his film will have a lot more artistic excellence than any of the pan Indian successes recently. With DOP Ravi Varman, Composer AR and editor S Prasad with great sound and Production team, if they give their best, they are better than anyone in the world.

To answer the scriptwriter thing, the main reasons why directors are writing on their own is that

This is not at all true! I really like writing shorts but I'm forced to direct my own screenplays because no one else will make them, and that is purely this industry's fault, because it often throws attention and money only at directors. This is changing little-by-little though: with people like Vijay Kumar, Tamizhprabha, Kaavya Ramkumar etc get recognition for their work as writers, but we're still far from having writers that are brand-names (like Aaron Sorkin in Hollywood).

Yes , this needs to be talked about and act upon! We are being poisoned by white skin colorism when our native Tamils have no one to look upon to , instead just fair skinned foreigners to be ashamed of ! Of what! Their color! Their identity and race is being disgraced by the own industry!

      @subramaniamiyer2432 Před 2 lety +5

Rightly pointed out! But I guess this issue is being constantly addressed by ppl from different fields and forums! This is my take, even though we have ppl like Aishwarya Rajesh doing some phenomenal films, majority of big hit Tamil movies are the ones where the female characters have literally no screen time apart from when they have to romance the hero(s).. so it's more like a glam doll kind of role and with majority in the country having a presumption that fair tone women/girls are more beautiful than the relatively duskier ones, the directors too go with such artists so that it could satisfy the majority of the folks hitting the theatre who want to see their demigods and then as an add on see a fair toned women dancing and flirting around them! I guess the day we can accept that beauty doesn't depend only on colour, that would be the day directors and producers would have the guts to look at tamil-born actresses!

Even In Telugu film industry.. Telugu gals are not given chances in big screen.. tht s becoz oly few community in south let their girls to proceed their career in acting ., Lik frm kerela , Bangalore and Mangalore.. comparing to Telugu film industry Tamil is far better.. many pure Tamil s lik Trisha , Vidya Balan, Andrea has done a decent job in other regional languages also .. Vani bhojan nd Priya Bhavani Shanker dng some movies.. even nw sai pallavi and Samantha are dng great in Telugu industry.. I kno tht ppl ll claim them both are non Tamil s .. But Sai pallavi s second name senthamarai is Tamil and Samantha doesn't kno any language other than Tamil and English.. in her recent insta feed she herself posted her as Tamil ponnu.. nd Naga Chaitanya in many interviews said she prefers to speak in Tamil at home.. no matter dey are born and bought up in Tamil Nadu.. nd we hav decent number of half Tamil s in the list.. and Tamil girls had started to do great in western also like Maitreyi, Simon and Charithra.. but where in Telugu ., people itself are not ready to see their girls in big screen.. where once many Telugu gals ruled d entire south industry.. i saw one interview of a Telugu IAS officer where she was making awareness abt casteism, applauded many Tamil movies fa spreading awareness where sme movies lik those are impossible in Telugu film industry.. she said there are so many fan wars based on casteism in Telugu industry.. Ram Charan is brutally trolled fa making movie with Rajamouli who belongs to different caste and also she referred abt Telugu ppl doesn't appreciate Telugu gals doing movies.. comparatively Tamil audience and Directors are ok in accepting Tamil girls nw.. but oly thing is people are hesitant in letting their girls to film industry..

When it comes to Bollywood, they have lost connection from roots. Which Tamil film was made to be pan Indian? Pushpa and RRR are Telugu films and KGF is a Kannada film. Bahubali was the only film made in multiple languages and even that was originally made in telugu. This "pan-India" happens only in films which released on OTT platforms. That can mostly be attributed to digital advancement. By the way small budget malayalam films are a huge hit and in most cases the starting point of soooo many remakes. Old Tamil movies were also female centric 'Manadhil urudhi Venum' , 'Pengal veetin kangal', 'penmani aval kanmani' and new films like 'Taramani' , 'Netrikannu', 'Mozhi', 'Aram' are all made with strong female leads. They may not all wear a superhero costume or keep hitting or shooting people but they all tackle sensitive social issues. In general, freedom for the female section of society is not "Indian culture" but it was Periyar and Thirukural in Tamil literature who broke these stereotypes even before they fully took hold. More research is needed for your content.

If Santhanam would have still stayed a comedian (actor), he would have definitely updated himself, letting go of the body shaming type comedy and stuff. And so better rom coms would have come out by this time. (Pretty much every rom come after 2010 in Tamil cinema was carried by SANTHANAM)

Totally agree with you on women being used as an eye candy. Most films made in the past decade would fail the bechdel test. Its kinda annoying to see no or bad representation of women in Tamil cinema. I don’t mind movies with high masculine energy but including a female character just for their physical attractiveness is so wrong. Actors and the audiences should be responsible and not be supportive of such poorly scripted movies in future.

My question is when will they stop with the hero worship?!? Instead of making them male protagonists, why are they making them “heroes” and “saviours” . Some directors go an extra mile to godify the heroes. It’s high time we StOp this and give importance to the story! The day the film makers give importance to other departments like writing, cinematography and art work, stunt choreography etc there will be immense growth in the industry.

    1) The fact that Beast did worked entirely is because I feel that the writer, Nelson, single handedly took on a mall hostage concept single handedly and ran out of ideas of scene treatment and we got a half-baked film! The reason as you point is the lack of collaborative writing that give justice to the story or script! Nelson is great director, his vision is good. Even in Doctor, the writting was impressive but it ran out of ideas in the climax.
2)Towards this 'Pan-India', mass audience just wants to see something big and be engrossed upon. Maybe influencing from Hollywood Marvel films and they tend to get influenced in wanting more content like that. But you can make a film with a big production, big stares but more importantly instead of making the production value grand, the script must be grand first. A good script is ultimate.
3)We actually getting a lot of films in the past few years where women acts as the protagonist like films played by Nayanthara, Jyothika and we also got Aruvi in 2017, Aadai, Game Over and Gang of Madras in 2019. But I agree is not much as how Male actors plays the lead in majority Tamil films. Especially STAR films, where the 'female lead' is only for the love interest, songs. We need more darker shade female characters with a lot of complexity. Strereotypical Kollywood.
4)Totally agree on STARS salary. It seems it follows the STAR's market. Even if the films fails, the actor is still geting his huge salary, where the directors and producers are the one getting affects. Make the production costs higher than just lead actor's salary. In the end, the film's output is the one shoudl speak, not the actor.

I have also some questions about our industry!
    - When you see in instagram or wherever about tamil movies, despite big hits you can witness that people talk a lot about certain movies only : 3, Sachin, 1000 oruvan, VTV, Vaaranam Ayiram, Anbe Sivam. Those are not masala movies but why? because those movies are chill, interesting and beautiful. If those movies get a release today in festival days, it will rock a lot! But instead, we are going for violence movies or mass masala ...
    - It's normal for certains actors to be paid a lot, it's same everywhere. But when your budget is 150 crores and your hero takes 100 crores, it's too much ... KGF was only 100 crores but it was something else. Why the leadings actors don't take for example a share after the result ? it will be better and they will choose carefully their scripts.
    - Why a director don't want to join his hand with a scriptwriter ? in our industry, we always need an example and everyone follow like sheeps after lol! Look at the director roundtable, Sudha Kongara asked Vignesh Sivan to write for her a script because she hates it, maybe they can try for once!
    - Heroines are so useless, how they can accept those roles ?
    - Multi-starrer and multiverse are not new but it's super rare in our industry. Hope lokesh with vikram will break it : vjs, kamal and surya together. heard T67 is also with lokesh and might be connected to vikram. that will be sick!!

4:21 A director writes his own scripts here because if it get remade in other languages, only the writer will get both credited for the "Original Story" and gets a particular sum as Royalty or something. Not the director. For example, Jeethu Joseph got credited in all the languages where Drishyam got remade. Only as a Writer. Not as a Director.
