Just bought a 99 Avalon for the wife, ex mecahnic. For the life of me I had NO CLUE! I thought electrical shorted system nightmares were in my future! I have 3 cars, lots of info from others, and never logged in to say thanks till now! Perfection!! All reset, and out of coma now! Great easy instruction vid! Feel blessed! :-)

Thanks Hero. I have had these models of Avalon since 96. The woman that plays my wife on TV, girlfriend if you are 63, Did it to the car at the airport and I couldn't remember from the last one I fixed. Fix it and soon after we came home she left the door open again. I tried several 1-2 1-3 -2-3 switch positions and nothing even though it had cleared before I installed a new battery because this one wouldn't jump. The first time clearing it everything went smoothly. So new battery and minutes later it was as useful as my EX wife. I decided to try all combinations between 1-3 like I was a painted monkey on crack trying everything many times quickly, Safety light was still flashing but it started right up. I do appreciate the video because my memory and another body part are both the same size and useless. Jeff " Captain Roadkill" USA Army retired with a very cool limp.

At least you have a switch. I'm still at a loss with my 1998 Toyota Camry (no switch in mine; alarm light is at the handbrake). The only ' disarming' mode I find has Valet Mode behind it, which I definitely don't want. I just want to switch the stupid alarm off.

Thanks bro, this really helped a lot. I have the same car and just turned the keeps back and forth a few times. Then started messing with the toggle switch till I noticed the alarm light stayed on instead of flashing, then flipped the toggle again and the light turned completely off. Then the car started right up

this concerns turning off AND Re-setting to OFF the factory Alarm & Starting the Engine of a 1999 Camry LE
after thinking (initiated by a Toyota dealer) that my problem was result of a Low Battery,
the battery tested good. the battery was removed/un-hooked from both terminals) for as it turned out, over an hour)
as I checked many fuses.(all were good) & after the hour) put battery back in . . . same problem alarm goes off.,
    car will not start.
So I sat in the car for a moment and after 30 seconds or so the alarm stopped & then I remembered someone said
    1.(with door closed,
    2. foot on brake,
3 turn key to where the transmission is able to be put in the Neutral position,
4 push & HOLD the red alarm button (mounted in dash to left of steering wheel)
and HOLD IN Depressed for 10-15 seconds. Then release)
    THEN the engine started.
I hope this will work for you. But in my case the alarm button was a definite factor.
(which the glovebox manual did not mention) AT ALL)
And the Alarm stayed off afterwards & did not re-activate. It WAS off previously and had not been an issue.
But I think the car sitting 4 days where the night temperature got down to 15-20 F was a factor in play.
    Because nothing else had changed.
Note (I had tried everything the glovebox manual said to try in order to solve my problem to no avail)

cars should never ever have this alarm on them. old cars need a free upgrade to remove such things. If you find yourself broke down on the road and no WIFI you're going to loose your mind over this. LOL...
