I noticed that Mr. Matthews is not a spring chicken anymore, so I am glad to see people like you carrying the torch with the kind of Am. Bulldog that are real and functional. Keep bulldogin'

    Not true all black American bulldogs came from James Ellerbe. The reason why they did not give him the credit at that time was because people thought he was a white man and as everybody knows, the south was very racist and would not give credit to Ellerbe because he was black. But thanks to JDJ, who was very verbal and spoke out about this and gave 100% of the credit of black American bulldogs who had gameness to them, he gave the credit to the rightful originator - James Ellerbe.

      Nice information thanks for sharing. I did not know that. I was going off of an interview where Don himself said he wanted to create a Black American Bulldog. Prolific life - Could you provide links with any information regarding this? It seems that this in itself is another controversial topic. Whether or not this line of dog even existed from some forums that I’ve read. I’ve also reached out to some people that are knowledgeable about this breed and they said they have definitely heard of Mr. Ellerbe and that his dogs did have a lot of color in them but as far as black dogs go they don’t recall him being the one that started it. Also, it appears he dealt with Bully/Johnson type dogs. Don infused black game dogs into his Bulldogs and created a totally different look than what Ellerbe would’ve had. Also, I don’t recall seeing very many predominantly black Bully/Classic type dogs out there.

    Quite possible a SBT, since Dons likes to keep them “smaller” a big staffy would be prob 45 lbs and could get you a more bully head, solid bones too. Depending on what kind of staffy. They’re different lines. The Walsall line was the dominate line of staffys used as the prototype for the APBT. I’m positive there were mixing of the old southern whites before don tho. I’m talking waaaay back in the 1800s early 1900s with the creation of the APBT.
    America already had their version of a fighting dog, but once Colby and others started imported the staffy from England it changed the game. Those SBT were dominating the fighting ring. One would assume dog men of the time would have crossed in those SBT and started their new yard/line going forward thus creating the APBT. Now what was in their yards prior to the imports? Prob old southern whites, crosses etc., remember most of america was rural too so it would make sense that the American “pit bull” before the imports were farm dog crosses. When you look at a game bred APBT you see staffy bull influence and perhaps some standard dog too. Check out triple J kennels

      From what I know of the dogs they were bred to small Johnson dogs. Then bred to Wrights Rounder and Scott’s Big Buck. They also used American Pit Bull Terrier I believe.The most popular dog was Margentina Sgt. Rock. All of my dogs have this blood in them, more than likely most American Bulldogs today do back in their pedigree. This would be a great topic for a video. • @prideofthesouthlandkennels
      @prideofthesouthlandkennels  Před 3 lety +2

      If I’m picking a pup out of one of my litters I look for several things. If I’m buying a pup I don’t really get as much insight other than what the breeder tells me. With that being said this is what I look for. First off I want to determine what I think I need or what I’m looking for, am I looking for a drivey pup or a calm pup? Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I tend to look for a middle of the pack type pup, I don’t want the most feisty but I don’t want one that’s shy or timid. Then I just watch how they interact with the litter mates. I want one with courage and determination, I don’t want the bully of the litter but I want one that stands it’s ground. Once I narrow it down to a few pups then I start to look at what they actually look like. Most people say they don’t do this but I want a good looking pup. Then I start to look at how they’re built and comparing. I measure muzzle lengths, head circumference, leg length and back lengths. Once they start to mature you can tell a lot more. I don’t like big pups so i usually don’t go with the biggest pup
