Sal….I completely ignored grunge when it first came out ……, it was my sons’ generation’s music. I just thought it was angry with depressing lyrics. And I’m from Seattle! Then the pandemic hit and I had time and interest to explore metal, grunge and other genres and I was flabbergasted by how good the grunge bands were! Especially AIC and PJ. Amazing melodies, great vocals, deep lyrics and great musicians. I became a grunge fan at 73! 😏🤘

That's wonderful!! Thanks for sharing!! I'm so happy you gave Grunge another listen and fell in love. It's amazing and came straight from their souls. They kept it "real" and really raw!!👊🥰 Pearl Jam is still out there rocking as hard and real as ever!!🙃 Oh and btw, I'm in your son's generation (Gen X😉)... as good as I know the 70's were for your generation (it's my parents generation too) music-wise... the 90's and Grunge were just as impactful to us Gen X'ers!!🙃🤗 Peace and light...

@@artis1969 well, yes…..one of the “big four”, and Chris Cornell had a great voice. For some reason, their songs didn’t connect with me as much. Neither did Nirvana….which was too “punk” for me. But Audioslave? Yeah! RATM and Cornell? How could it miss? 😁

    • @artis1969

@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 I'd bet most of us who were lucky enough to be immersed in that phenomenon all have different stories. I owned SG and AIC before the Teen Spirit Beatlemania. I liked them both, but it was Nirvana and PJ that brought it all together for me. It was amazing to learn of all these great bands coming out of one scene.
Now that it's mostly all over, I always come back to SG and AIC. I still like Nirvana and PJ, but the music hasn't endured quite as much to me as the other two.
Audioslave escaped me. I thought it would be a great collaboration, but it ended up being a bit too radio friendly for me. But I do think the coolest thing about grunge in general was 1) it was influenced by so many different types of music, and 2) all the bands on the periphery that got exposure they would not have normally gotten. We might not exactly call STP, Pumpkins, etc grunge, but the doors were blown off for bands like that to become really big. RHCP/Jane's Addiction came before, but were all under the umbrella of the alternative genre. REM, Live...there was no shortage of great music and different perspectives. It was a great time.

Always great to see someone discover just how great Pearl Jam is. The rabbit hole is deep on this one. Their sound has changed over 30 years, as they’ve obviously matured and evolved. But they still have a huge fan base, and still fill arenas around the world. If you’re looking for rockers, I’d start with the UNCENSORED “Jeremy” video, the official animated “Do The Evolution” video, and “Porch” and “State of Love and Trust” from MTV Unplugged. Subscribed.

Pearl Jam are icons. I was 20 in 92 and as a part of the grunge movement these guys helped change the world along with Nirvana, Sonic Youth, The Pixies, Soundgarden and Mudhoney. Gen Xers like them and me grew up through 80s hair metal that was entirely about excess and image and we weren't really feeling that. Grunge signalled a change into grittier dirtier musical choices and deeper, more personal and resonant lyrics delivered with the power and emotion of the overall performance. Also, makes amazing driving music too, so there's that 😆🤘

👏👏👏 VERY well said!!👊 I was 20 in '92 as well and I feel ya on the 80's hair metal. We had our fill of it and the Seattle Grunge music was a much-needed change. I'll even go as far as to say... it was life-changing in some ways. It was good to know that I wasn't alone in my thoughts and feelings about the horrible state and ways of the world. Just coming of age in that time period, entering the "adult" world and realizing the corruptness, selfishness, hate greed etc was absolutely horrifying and disheartening to me... listening to Grunge was very cathartic for my young soul back then (and it still is!!😉). It made me feel so much better. That's the power of music!!!🤗🥰

Pearl Jam are one of the greatest live bands ever. Even to this day their concerts are very energetic and they have great live sound. I just saw them last fall (2022) and Eddie was still running around the stage jumping off speakers, although he's a little more cautious now.
"Release" live in Holland 1992 is the best live PJ song ever. Pinkpop '92 is also an iconic PJ performance.
Grunge really began before this with the U-Men, the Melvins, GreenRiver, Tad, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone. tons of other great bands besides the top 4 of Nirvana, PJ, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains.

"Grunge" was born in Seattle in the early 90s. Both Pearl Jam, and Nivana are Seattle Bands, and came out at almost the same time Curt Cobain of Nirvana, and Eddie Vedder, even jammed with each other's bands. Jimi Hendrix was also Born and raised in Seattle. Must be something in the water.

The hard part about grunge is it's more of an era than a genre. If you look at "the big 4" from Seattle, Nirvana is punk, Sound Garden is Metal, Alice In Chains is metal-ish (I feel like they're doing their own thing, but metal guys like them), and Pearl Jam is a straight rock jam band.
The 80's rock scene was dominated by hair metal. Hair metal was about partying, strippers, getting high, excess. Grunge was here to pull that back and talk about real feelings, anger, sadness, loss. All while not being over produced and trying to look genuine. Being genuine was important, not your look, not your stage persona.
Don't worry about figuring out grunge as a genre. You'll start to detect it. Is Stone Temple Pilots grunge? yes. Is Smashing Pumpkins grunge? yes. Soul Asylum? yes. All 3 of those bands sound very different from each other.

Just wanna throw my two-cents in for whatever it's worth. Please understand, it's sincere and not meant to be inflammatory...
Your description of the 80's and 90's rock music and the difference between them was spot on. However, I feel the need to further expand on it...
The 90's spawned 2 different sub-genres... Alternative Rock and Grunge. STP has ALWAYS stated VERY clearly that they were NOT part of the Grunge scene, which is where the label "Grunge" music originated. It is 100% specific to the sound and style created in the SEATTLE underground clubs/bars music scene. Also, Scott Weiland of STP has stated many times.... "we are not from Seattle and were never a part of the underground Seattle music scene." He said they were just a rock band, which fell into the "Alt Rock" category sonically and stylistically. Just my thoughts. Peace and light...

    • @Billis75
      @Billis75 Před rokem

I don't know if that's something Weiland gets to decide. In Los Angeles, we had 2 stations that played STP. There was KNAC the metal station and Sex Type Thing was the first single we heard on KNAC. So I knew who STP were from that. A distinct sound. Then there is KROQ which was 80's alternative (The Cure, Love and Rockets, Violent Femmes all day long), and they transitioned to a 90's alternative sound, and their first STP single was Plush, and everyone who only listened to KROQ wanted to know if that was the new Pearl Jam song.
He may not have wanted to be a part of grunge, but then they release a song that is 100% a Pearl Jam song. They're a San Diego band, Smashing Pumpkins are a Chicago band, but they all belong.

When fall hits, my heart needs grunge. I've lived in the PNW my entire life & the genre speaks to me at some baseline level. Don't apologize for your process either. Grunge was such a departure from the rock coming out of LA, it took a lot of folks a min ( some have still never connected with it) music is so personal and yet connects us in big ways.
This was a fun reaction. Well wishes from Oregon 🌲🌊

Alice in Chains. If you like Eddie, wait until you hear Layne. While Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Nirvana were all incredible in their own right, Alice in Chains was deep, dark, and unlike any of the other groups. I really believe Apple Music summed it up best when describing AIC's "Dirt" album:
"Alice in Chains were the darkest bands to emerge from the grunge explosion of the early 90's. Where other groups balanced their moody extremes with pop hooks (Nirvana) or anthemic riffs (Pearl Jam and Soundgarden), singer Layne Staley eventually died at the hands of his addiction and "Dirt" remains one of the most disturbing looks at a wasted life and is one long slide down to the bottom of Dante's inferno. It's frightening in its intensity and its mastery of a world Black Sabbath once merely suggested."

"Grunge" was/is a descriptor used for the sound and style of the music coming out of the Seattle underground music scene in the late 80's-early 90's. Grunge = dirty, grimy and messy. You know, the things people typically try hide or "sweep under the rug" so to speak. The term Grunge in music was given to the musicians and bands in the underground music scene in SEATTLE Washington. So, "Grunge" is SPECIFIC to those bands ONLY. The big 4 bands or what I like to call the "Greats of Grunge" were Nivana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains (a play on "Alice in Wonderland😉)...
Anyway, the title grunge was given to the music coming out of Seattle due to its heavy/sludgy instrumentals, gritty vocals and DEEP AF lyrics and themes. This song is a perfect example. It was inspired by the death of a homeless veteran Eddie Vedder once knew. Eddie was back in the area where the homeless man "lived" and went looking for the man to say hi. He was told by the locals that the man had passed away recently. He had died on the streets. He froze to death in his sleep. Hence the opening line of this song: "Freezing, rests his head on a pillow made of concrete. Again."... The news hit Eddie Vedder hard and he was inspired to write this song in the homeless vets honor to help raise awareness for the issues surrounding homelessness like mental illness, PTSD etc. It was a special time and they touched so many of us who were just coming of age. We had an earful of the 80's partying, sex, drugs, t&a rock and roll. So this music was a gift to us. The sound and style was created by a group of like-minded musically gifted souls. They had a lot to say and we needed to hear it.💯💯💯 Hope this helps you to understand Grunge a little more.😊
Sad fact: the ONLY grunge band left (out of the "big 4") is Pearl Jam!!! Long live Pearl Jam!!👊🥰🥰🥰 For another powerful fast-paced and fun performance... Pearl Jam "PORCH" live at Pink Pop (1992) Eddie Vedder gets even more crazy in that one!!!🙃😁🤩
RIP Kurt Cobain (Nirvana lead singer), Chris Cornell (Soundgarden lead singer) and Layne Staley (Alice in Chains lead singer). Thanks for the music boys...🙏❤❤❤
EDIT: Grunge is just a sub-genre with the Rock category. No matter how you spin it though... it's Rock music! lol!!😜🤘

Crowd surfing and staging diving was how we do in Seattle back in the day - it was done at all the grunge shows- free for all - notice no security at the stage! Think Eddie climbing the wall to the balcony at this show.
