The Turrican Franchise is often looked at as Super Metroid on speed! Without a doubt one of the most impressive games for the classic Commodore64 before being ported to the legendary Amiga.
In this Complete History video, we take a look back at every single game in that franchise including the games that didn't make it and of course the more recent Turrican Flashback series which is a brilliant way to relive these classic titles.
In fact, i really did grow to live the home console releases for both the Mega Drive / Genesis and even more so, the Super Nintendo releases whilst playing that and they have even become my favorites.
But, hat are your favorites... let me know in the comment section and make sure to go show some love to my podcast co-host Mr Grizzly Krieden who provided the voice over for this episode you can check out his awesome Instagram here / thegrizzlygrotto

I spent so many hours playing turrican 2 as a kid I loved it, especially the music. So when you mented you where working on a complete history I was really looking forwards to it. Must say the video did not disappoint, there are a few verisons in there I've not played that you mentioned. I must admit I didn't know about any of the failed attempts todo a 3d turrican games. I think you're probably right about it being better for the legacy of turrican that they did not come out, it would be hard to recapture turrican in 3d.

    FINALLY.
I've been saying that Turrican was based on Oscar for decades.
I worked in an arcade in Whitechapel in the late 80's and they had an Oscar cabinet there and I loved that game. Then adored Turrican 1 & 2 on the Amiga.
This is the first time I've heard it acknowledged that Oscar influenced Turrican.

Amiga is my go-to system for Turrican, but the original C64 versions are astonishing. I'm sure if you showed them to the folks who designed the C64 they'd have a hard time believing they were running on the original hardware.

Superb retrospective. We are in a kind of golden age for Turrican lovers, what with Flashback, Gunlord X, Valfaris and Ultracore all out on console. Good things do come to those who wait. Now if they’d only add the C64 versions to Flashback, I won’t moan about a new Turrican.

  • @Mr.PastGlory
    @Mr.PastGlory Před 5 měsíci

Excellent video! There are two things regarding Manfred Trenz and Turrican I'd like to add:
    - The last game Manfred Trenz made for the Commodore 64 was Enforcer (aka. Katakis 2), a side-scrolling Shoot 'em Up. It was released on Golden Disk 64 in 1992. Golden Disk 64 and Magic Disk 64 were disk magazines for the C64 by the German publisher Computec (aka. CP). Manfred referred to himself as 'the Master' in the credits of Enforcer. I bought that issue of Golden Disk back in the days and found out many years later that it was a game by Manfred.
    - Manfred Trenz made a heavily Turrican inspired game for the Super Famicom / Super Nintendo. Rendering Ranger R² (working title: Targa), which was released only in Japan.
(I did a playthrough 16 years ago, the clips and the playlist are still on my yt-channel. Quality is of course by far not up to date and back in the days there was this 15 minute max. duration for videos on yt. Therefore I did 1 clip per stage. Of course there are much better playthroughs of R² on yt now, anyway mine was the first and was captured from the original hardware and not using emulation.)
My favourite Turrican is still Turrican II for the Amiga.
If You like the music Chris Huelsbeck made on C64, I highly recommend You to check out Thomas Detert.
It's kinda sad that Manfred Trenz has disappeared.

Great vid, appreciate it 👍☺ ️I'm always amazed at how the early bedroom coders of the Speccy, C64 days knocked out games so quickly and at the same time being just kids in a lot of cases. The C64 versions you showed were super impressive. Like you said, so many 2d game franchaises were ruined in the move to 3d - Lemmings, Fade to black (Another world, Flashback) etc etc. I'd even add in Sonic T.Hedgehog to that too ;) They didn't realise that the 2d nature/constraints of these games were WHY they were so good to start with..Thanks again..

So it was only later in life that I discovered thanks to the net in the early 00s that Turrican 2 was the REAL game and US was the port- I didnt even know anything about the shooting stages, the system it was on...

For me the Turrican 2 on Amiga 500 is the high point of the series. Back then benchmark was "arcade like experience in home" and with Turrican 2 you can drop the "like". It's butter smooth perfection from start to finish including just right balance with the retro style pixel art from late 80's polished to 16 bit glory.
As a game music fan the Turrican 2 title song has made most lasting impression of any game I've ever played.
Only downside is that up until advent of variable refresh rate Amiga 500 emulation experience was due to the game being PAL only a shadow of itself compared to running on a real hardware. Another downside is that the controller mapping was really wonky at the time due to limited number of joystick buttons (how I hate the up equals jump control scheme) and the need to use keyboard to activate some features.

I really liked Turrican 2 for the Commodore Amiga, so much fun and such a well put together game. Having said that, my first love will always be Turrican 3. Even though I only had about 4 levels of that game it to this day remains my single favourite game. Even though I will never be able to play it again I will always love the levels, music and the grappling hook. The whole series deserves more credit than it gets but I suppose that is the way of things. You are not big in Japan or the US then you don't count.

My first exposure to this series was though the unmentioned here J2ME version of the game (that was pre-installed on the Siemens M65 phones). It was frankly amazing for a phone game in early 2000s.

Still waiting for my physical switch release from SLG. As an old Amiga fan it’s been a hard wait. Especially with Turrican Flashback having 50% off on the eshop constantly. But the SLG version adds some extra features including full maps for all the games. And let’s face it even the Turrican cover art is worth the wait.

I recall in some German interview it was mentioned that early in development of Turrican 3 they hit a technical limitation which seemed impossible to pass on Amiga, which was part of the reason behind switch to Mega Drive. However the work on Mega Turrican actually led to solution for the Amiga issue and so the Amiga version was back, and the development of it was so fast and smooth it actually overtook the Mega Turrican.
It is perhaps also worth mentioning Gunlord and Gunlord X since they are kind of ripoffs :P

17:17 Actually for me everything Turrican was destryoed in T3: a) that stupid hook, much better was the surround flash, it was an essential weapon of the game... now gone with an action-destroying hook. b) The whole point of Turrican was exploration and finding secret areas (and lots of extras there)

From what I've seen what Turrican shows in gameplay; I'm pretty sure both Disney and Fox will get involved with cease and desist letters if the game ever does get released on the modern consoles. The game loves to take from other franchises. The guy behind Turrican does have great potential to create something completely original without copying from other media. Although universal soldier can be classified as a rip-off of Robocop and the terminator itself.
