Im so glad that I came across this vid, and it makes total sense that pigeions are possibly the ultimate low tech form of communication! I definitely wanna try this at some point whenever my family and I work enough to move out of the city!
This is something ive been wanting to do, is raise some Homing Pigeons. Now im forced on disability for the rest of my life, i want to do this more than ever!
This is so dope i want some but i live in california and dont know if this is possible here . I wouldnt want so many .. how many would you recommend for a complete beginner? Or would you recommend this at all
Is there a trap door to the pigeons’ home so that they can get into their coop but not leave? Or is that not necessary because they just stay their because that’s where they were raised and where there food and water is? Another question, do I need a coop that big or can I just build them little boxes? Probably looking at getting just 5 or so. Edit: I was thinking about just getting a small dog crate and wedging it between two branches of a tree and securing it with zip ties, probably about 5 feet off the ground (high enough for protection from prey, but low enough that I can reach it to change their food and water. What do you think of this idea? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
If you look to where the birds go inn and out, you will see a bungy cord that holds up the trap door. so yes there is a door that lets them in but keeps them from going back out when i choose to close it, The bigger the better for the coop just make sure you can clean the bottom when need be.
Awesome stuff! My friend and I going to start it. So we are total newbies on it. We want two coops. One at his place and one at mine. Would each of us need our own pigeon? If I release a pigeon to send him a message will it stay at his location until he releases it back to me? Or we need two pigeons? And we live in the mountains of NC and there is about 30 miles between us
you would both need pigeons that are homed to your own places. then you could exchange birds and they would fly back to their own coop carrying messages back and forth.
Would you sell me some I’m just getting into homing pigeons I already have a coop thankfully if not do you know anyone that would sell me some good homers? I live in Michigan willing to pay for shipping also.
