    Gyroplanes, Gyrocopters or Autogyros! Find out why they can be "all things to all aviators" in this "Top Gear" style program. Phil Harwood of The Gyrocopter Experience explains to you why flying Gyros is safer than light aircraft or light helicopters.
    With a variety of models now becoming available in the UK (and worldwide), the big question is... "which one do you want?", Phil explains the main differences between them.
    You are invited to "fly them, to try them, before you buy them" as they are all available in the Museum, Training School and Showroom at The Gyrocopter Experience - York.
    The world of Gyroplanes, Gyrocopters or Autogyros has changed! FInd out why :-)

    Thanks Phil. Of all the gyro videos I've watch, this is the one that convinced me to go gyro vs. fixed wing. I started lessons in September 2015 and got my license in February 2016. What a great experience. My wife and I fly regularly now and just love the sport. The power off landing demo you did in this video is what sold me on the safety advantages of gyros. I did one on my fourth lesson and did no fewer than 20 before my first solo, in addition to another 70 normal landings. You are right about the Magni M16. That's what we fly and it's a great machine. Come fly with us in Texas sometime.

    Fantastic presentation, Phil. I've watched this video at least a dozen times. You are a great spokesman for the sport. I've been hooked on the concept since I was a wee lad back in the late 70s. I used to play baseball just across the street from a little manufacturing company in Stanton, California called "Ken Brock Manufacturing." I'm sure you know the name. When he wasn't out flying, Ken's gyro was proudly displayed in the lobby. My dad and I would stare in the window and dream about owning our own. Gyros have come a long way since then. I understand PAL-V has selected you to head-up their flying car training program. Congratulations, that's quite an achievement. PAL-V is a game changer. Cheers!

    Well done, informative video. Makes a lot of good points about autogyros. I flew a Bensen type for ten years.... Had about 5 inflight engine failures with the good old "Mac" engines...would love to own one with a modern reliable engine. Autogyros are so much fun to fly.

    those gears are used prior to launch - they get the rotors up to speed then the engine is disengaged from the rotors... hence why he said theres no IN-FLIGHT connection between engine and rotors....

    The european bathtubs are very pretty machines, thier weight is a bit cumbersome, I much prefer open frame at about a tenth of the cost.... altho I must admit the tubs are nice on a cross country, To me, it is just the cost, the complication and the weight that kills the bathtubs.... and the mamoth weight is now causing hub bar cracking....... From my experience, the lighter weight open frame or fairinged machines are much more fun.... and much cheaper.... hopefully you can show some decent more basic machines in the future... the cost of the turnkey factory jobs makes ordinary people think that gyros are out of reach (financially) and they dont have to be.... thanks for promoting gyros tho, a nice change

    • @ratmanmurray7137
      @ratmanmurray7137 Před 10 lety

      I am not knocking them mate, just they are not my cup of tea. I like my old school open machines and yes some don't do a lot of hours, but others like mine do. The mustering boys do in excess of 1000 hours per annum. What puts me off the MTO is the lack of prop to rotor clearance, or more the fact the rotor can be lowered at the rear to have 100mm of prop blade (stationary prop) sticking up thru the rotor system. I agree they are all (the euro clones) very beautiful, fantastic to fly on cross country trips... very comfortable..... however, to me, gyros with forward angled masts, those with stainless airframes and especially less than zero prop to rotor clearance make me very nervous, to say the least. Again, I thank you for showing gyros in a good light, however, there are more affordable options (example sport copter) as well as home builts available here in Aus, which may be more suitable for our rougher strips, there are many euro turn keys here in Aus now, a lot of their pilots are now constructing a single open to have fun in, which also keeps the hours from racking up on their relatively short TBO mega tubs... keeping the latter for trips only. It is like motorbikes, you meed 2 to cover the spectrum of use.... a road bike (euro tub) for long road trips, a trail bike (open lightweight gyro) to 'paddock bash' Each has their place, each are fun in their own field... each compliment each other.... maybe you cant tell, but I love gyros :)

    • @michaelglanville40
      @michaelglanville40 Před 10 lety

      hans zarkov Well, if you're interested in just flying, you can get a Sport Pilot's License, and fly sport aircraft, a lot of which have open air cockpits. I forget what the specific restrictions are, but you have to fly in VFR (Visual Flight Range) conditions, which is daylight, nice weather that's not too windy, and something like under 10,000ft. I have a Commercial Pilot's LIcense so I can fly in day or night conditions at whatever the service ceilings are for the aircraft I'm flying, baring ceiling restrictions that inclement weather brings. Sport flying also has a restriction on the type of airplanes to fly, and I believe the weight limit on them is like 1300 pounds or something. I have to look it up. But it's cheaper than immediately going for the full Private Pilot's License,and any flying you do in a sport plane goes toward getting the PP license. I think that might be right up your alley; they're a lot of fun to fly.
      I ride motorcycles occasionally too. If you're like me, you may not like the wind when you ride a bike, but as soon as you get into an aircraft you might not mind the wind. I don't, and I just find that interesting.

    • @ratmanmurray7137
      @ratmanmurray7137 Před 10 lety

      Thanks Michael, I am quite happy flying the open frame gyros I already have. I just worry that people think the only gyros available are the new pretty ones and financially out of reach of the average person. There are other options that don't cost an arm and a leg and are as much fun, if not more fun. Naturally, the euro clones are brilliant as cross country machines, but a well built, well sorted open frame machine is much more fun to throw around and basically play in and cost a lot less. Short cross country flights are achievable and fun also. All just my opinion.

    • @WheelsRCool
      @WheelsRCool Před 10 lety

      Open-air might be more fun, but the canopy ones look cooler IMO :D Also for very hot days or cold days, say in fall or even winter, I'd prefer a closed canopy gyro. I think some of them though you can take the canopy top off and fly it open.
