- This video identifies the Campo del Cielo Meteorite, which is from Argentina. This is an iron-nickel meteorite. Iron-nickel meteorites have Widmanstässen structures, and are magnetic. Note that this sample has not been cut and etched to reveal the Widmanstässen structures inside.While traveling through Earth's atmosphere, a baked fusion crust formed on the surface--including pits and undulations. Because the meteorite was exposed to weathering, a little reddish-brown rust can be seen within some of the pits on this meteorite.
The 26 craters related to this meteorite are around four- to- five thousand years old. Some meteorite samples from these craters are among the largest found on Earth--weighing about 30 tons. Similar to other well-known meteorite sites, local natives collected the meteoric iron for use as tools and weapons. [source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campo_d...].
