  • Ocean County - Lakewood - Third Alarm - 419 Joe Parker Rd.
Around 1:20 AM, May 4, 2024, Lakewood Police received a phone call for a reported structure fire at 419 Joe Parker Rd in Lakewood. The caller stated they saw flames and smoke and possibly someone was trapped in the garage. When Police arrived they saw two men cutting into the garage door with a saw and trying to gain entry. They were able to cut a good chunk and removed the door along with a makeshift wall that was put over the garage door. Police and bystanders were able to pull the victim out of the garage and hand him over to EMS who was on scene waiting. The conditions of the person are unknown to us at the time. Seconds later L-5 & E-5 arrived on the scene and started going to work. Engine 5 stretching hand lines to the structure. Along with L-5 getting ready to make entry. Other lines were then stretched off of E-1 when they arrived and got a secondary water source. Firefighters were inside the structure fighting the fire for about 30 minutes. Before knocking down all the flames. The fire finally went to a third alarm for more manpower to the scene since they had an extensive overhaul to perform. Fire companies from Brick Township, Point Pleasant Beach, Point Pleasant Boro, Howell, and Jackson Township. Crews operated on the scene till 6:30 AM. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Might have been the cause, but ultra slow FD attack could be blamed for losing the house. Never seen a department pull and charge a hose that slowly. Get the lead out of your rear and get to work!

Back seat driver here. That first hand line should have been charged immediately to start knocking down and cooling the fire. The driver can do this in a second and then worry about water supply. Hats off to all the people involved in the rescue. Hopefully the individual that pulled from the garage will pull through. You did a great job with the video. It also seemed to me that some of the people were family near the rescue.

I don't understand this! Our fire department arrives and two guys grab a cross lay(150, or 250') and get into position while the engineer starts the pump! 60 seconds onsite and they are spraying water while the fourth guy taps a hydrant! 1,000 gallons onboard gives them 10 minutes to get hydrant inline! Waiting 5 minutes to start applying water doesn't seem effective!

The more you get your heart rate up the faster you breathe, the faster you breathe the less air is in your tank. Unless there is someone's life being threatened you want to be more methodical. Usually (emphasize USUALLY) you attack the fire from inside to outside. Otherwise you can push the heat to unburnt parts of the house. The layout of the house, the structure, and building materials, even the yard layout can effect that, so there is no 'one size fits all'. This is also why sometimes it takes a few minutes to decide the best way to attack the fire. The fact that the garage had walls built against the doors meant that the layout of the house may have been altered from original and not standard or to fire standards. Which means caution is warranted.

I imagine that while they were trying to get that guy out, the possibility that he may have been in the fire would make a fire extinguisher a valuable item if he came out on fire.

First things first, there was NO urgency when the FD arrived, they treated this fire as if it was a training exercise. Second point, unless the officer-in- charge told the first crew not to go in but to fight fire from the the front door, there was know reason why (unless there was massive obstruction to the crew), they did not work the line though the house to the back where the bulk of the fire was, they probably would have knocked down the bulk of the fire. Jobs like this, you have to be aggressive to save the property...........................this was once somebody's home.

Helping out is a good and natural thing to do. BUT!
Be sure of your capacities, and NEVER become another victim.
If there are already people helping, dont decide to become a burden.
The officers who were needed to push back the civilians could have been helping, instead of being forced to control bystanders who became a hazard.
