    Rayman 3 for the GBA was the first game that was "officially mine". I loved that game to death as a kid and I still do now, from the soundtrack to the quirky game over screen. I remember liking the bossfights because I thought Rayman's aggressive stance looked cool haha. Good times..

    The GBA version of Rayman Raving Rabbids is actually my favorite Rayman platformer! It’s a shame that it so commonly gets overlooked by the inferior home console counterparts, since despite the game’s technical issues in some places, it’s still a really fun and enjoyable time!

    Nice to see someone talk about the handheld games! I'd like to mention the damage you took in the swamp levels in R3 is due to an emulator glitch, so it doesn't happen on actual hardware. Funny enough I've heard it happens in the Virtual Console version too :p

    It's a shame these videos don't get more views. Are they super mindblowing or anything? No, but they don't need to be. The quality needed is here with visuals and audio, and it's just neat to hear Calcom talk about whatever games he talks about. Don't really enjoy this any less than a Nitro Rad, FrameRater or Antdude.
    Thanks for all the videos man, brought me a lot of entertainment.

    The Rayman games on the GBA are a lot of fun. It was always nice to see a series embrace the GBA. For me, it's one of the things that make the GBA my favourite console (portable or otherwise). I love that the GBA got its own Crash, Spyro, Rayman and Sonic games and I love that other series got sequels such as the OG F-Zero and Mario Kart titles. The GBA library is whole little microcosm of a gaming world.

    I just finished Rayman "3" and LOVED it. Other than the kind of shitty bosses, its level design really satisfied me as a Rayman fan wanting more 2D content. Sure, I got a lot of game overs, but I wouldn't necessarily call it "hard", as they added a lot of checks and balances to make game overs less lethal, such as continuing from the beginning of the section instead of the entire level, saving lums you collected, not having limited continues, and generally having shorter stages. It's really a hidden gem in my opinion. I'm excited to try Raving Rabbids GBA because I've heard its similar!

    Rayman 3 GBA still has some gorgeous sprites and backgrounds for a gba game. Well animated too. Definitely an underappreciated tittle.
    I'd also put Hoodlum's Revenge in a similar camp, despite some of it's quirks. GBA Rabbids is also an interesting (if buggy and a little rushed), look into what we could have gotten with the "Rayman 4 that never was".

    and also, The Game Boy Color and PlayStation 1 Ports of Rayman 2: The Great Escape have something quite in common as well, which both versions have good amount of the levels and minigames being cut, removing half of the game's content for limitations, and a whole chunk of the game was missing on both versions. I grew up with the PlayStation 1 port, which does have a whole chunk of Rayman 2 missing from that version of the game.

    The swamp level issue of GBA Rayman 3 is not a developer mistake, it's the fact that *most* emulators can't really handle 3D levels of this game correctly for god knows what reason. If I remember correctly, mgba is capable of playing them correctly, but I may be mistaken.

    Ngl, the GBA Raving Rabbids is one of my favourite Rayman games!! it was so fun, hard on it's own way and had different Rabbids around the game.. the pink Rabbids are my favourite xD they look so tiny yet so EVIL.
    These games deserve better, they are so underrated.. specially RRR because it's closer to the Rayman 4 we all needed for so long...
    I don't have a GBA so I played most of these games on a emulator in my tablet many years ago.. it was harder but worth (I think these still on aptoide if anyone wants to give these games a try!)

    I only started getting into Rayman in 2021 with Rayman Advance (should’ve went for Redemption but I didn’t know it existed). I enjoyed my time with Advance. But then I played Rayman 3 GBA.
    And it’s my all-time favorite Rayman GBA title.
    At the time I didn’t understand the story was from the second game, I just adored the visuals and charm. That game was why Rayman 3’s Rayman is favorite design. The sprites just make him look so cute. The other games are fun too, Hoodlum’s Revenge is a great and Raving Rabbids GBA is something we should’ve got.
    I played a lot of Rayman since, but the GBA games are special to me.

    3:31 regarding this theory: donkey kong country for the snes was ported to the gb color at the same time that donkey kong 64 was being published, and a screenshot uv 64's menu was used as the port's menu.

    I just got the Rayman anniversary edition (Rayman Advance and Rayman 3 combined) and yes, as a guy who played different versions of Rayman (Psx and PC) i noticed how it was way easier, you even get more hits (4, instead of 3, and with the P you get 7 instead of 5) But now i gotta tell you.
    I noticed on the back on the box you see a screenshot of Rayman advance with 99 lives lol. Bit fortelling on how easy it is :P

  • @Faapu
    @Faapu Před 3 lety +6

    I actually just recently beat Rayman 3 on my sexy modded GBA, the final boss was kind of a dick though. On a different note, the DSiWare version of Rayman annoys me because it takes a picture of my dumb face every time I die and respawn on a checkpoint

    • @thepuzzlemaster64
      @thepuzzlemaster64 Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, I freaking hate that camera feature in the DSi port. The GBA and DSi ports also screwed-up Picture City because they made Rayman move slower on slippery platforms, and glitched a couple obstacles.
      If you want an easier Rayman 1, just play the DOS port. That's what the GBA, DSi, and mobile versions are based on. It's my favourite version of the game, even if it's missing the bells & whistles of the PS1 and Saturn version. It fixes most of the unfinished parts of the PS1 version, and makes the level revisits funner by adding more secrets and repositioning the cages in better spots (except for one cage in Eat at Joe's)

    • @Faapu
      @Faapu Před 3 lety

      I don't think any version of Rayman 1 is particularly enjoyable past the first world, but the DOS version probably plays the best. IMO there's not much reason to play the original now that we have Rayman Redemption

    • @thepuzzlemaster64
      @thepuzzlemaster64 Před 3 lety

      @@Faapu
      Not a big fan of Rayman Redemption. None of the trailers or the gameplay footage interested me. To me it feels like it over-corrects a lot of things that made the original game special.
      The original did have problems (some levels drag-on, the precision platforming with terrible ice physics, the rock golems are a pain to kill, Bongo Hill, Space Mama, Eat at Joe's, etc...), but with one or two quality of life patches the game would be perfect in my eyes.
      Now imagine Rayman 1 was a sandwich, one with both toppings you love and hate, but overall a decent sandwich. Rayman Redemption in my opinion takes this sandwich, removes most of the toppings you hate, and dumps a ton of bacon on top. Bacon is a good topping, but now all I taste is the bacon and only a tiny bit of that original sandwich.
      Redemption's changes aren't bad, but it just doesn't feel like Rayman 1 anymore. I would have preferred if the creator made an original Rayman game instead of making Rayman 1 the base.

      rayman 3 from gba, was supposed to be the remake of rayman 2, but ubisoft suggested it to be 3, to align the game to consoles, the problem is the complex story to explain, rayman hoodlum's revenge was a continuation of rayman 3 , but underrated.

    Rayman Advance = Rayman 1 (Obviously)
    Rayman 3 GBA = Rayman 2: The Great Escape
    Rayman: Hoodlums Revenge = Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc
    And Finally, Rayman Raving Rabbids GBA = Rayman 4

    I just beat Rayman 3 GBA today and WOW that game was hard ! Easily harder than the home console Rayman 1. After reaching a certain point, you pretty much need perfect executions at all times or you'll just straight up die. Also, the fact that there's like 10 extra lives in the whole game make the checkpoints hardly relevant since game overs are common place.
    Definitily the hardest game in the series in my opinion.

    sooo ... the gameboy could play alot of gameboy colour games... in reality it had maybe 5-6 games that only it could play

    • @CalcomYT

      Sooo... there... were... actually... 612... games... that... could... only... be... played... on... the... GBC... Granted, there were about 312 games within its overall library of 900+ that were designated as "Dual Mode" (meaning they could be played on original hardware, etc.) Still, that's a hell of a lot more than maybe 5-6 exclusives, especially when you consider that ~113 of those 612 weren't multiplatform ports, meaning they were created specifically for the GBC. The eastiest way to tell whether or not a game supports "Dual Mode" (other than easily accessible lists online) is by the cartridge design. Clear + bulge on top = GBC only. Black = any Game Boy model.

    Rayman doesn't have a neck and body because of the limitations of 32 and 64-bit systems? spoken like somebody that wasn't around for those generations. the first Rayman game was sprite based. They could have drawn in a neck if they wanted.

      Rayman started development on the 16-bit Atari ST where those limitations were indeed present thanks to Ancel designing the hero to be able to punch enemies from a distance. The game then moved to the SNES (where there were also limitations) and then the Jaguar where it was embraced as a design choice. I know what I'm talking about. Do you?

    i would not recommend rayman advance, for one single fatal flaw, if you jump of a plum in the water, you can in fact just die, as if you jumped straight into water. maybe i have broken copies but that happened to me on every version i played

    No dude, don't recommend the GBA and DSi versions of Rayman 1; at least not for people's first playthrough. The GBA's screen crunch is atrocious for a game like Rayman 1 (you can get used to it after repeated playthroughs), and they made the experience worse somehow in the DSi version by ruining the puzzles for certain cages, and making the game take a picture of you every time you cross a checkpoint or respawn at a checkpoint, with no option to turn it off. They also butchered Picture City in both versions.
    If you really want to play Rayman 1 on the go, and your device can't emulate PS1 or Saturn, get the DOS port! That's what the GBA and DSi versions are based on, but without the bugs; the only downside is the soundtrack isn't well implemented, and the graphics are below average (compared to PS1/Saturn).
    It runs great on DOSBOX, and DOSBOX runs on almost anything.

    I don't get why the devs say that Rayman's appearance was due to the technical limitations. Countless other 2d platformers could do limbs. And this is PS1 era we're talking about.
    Most likely the limitation was their skill as developers

    Lets face ot the game boy was a pile of steaming turd, even as a kid I could never stand playing on one without getting bored out of my brains, only my nerdiest friends loved the, ps1 and ps2 were great though.
