I don't know how others sew in zippers, but I generally sew the seam closed - using the longest stitch possible for the area where the zipper will be, reverse stitching at the base and resuming a normal stitch length for the remaining seam. I iron it open, place the zipper face down on the space, run a stitch (using a zipper foot if available) down each side. Then I use a seam ripper to pull/cut out the long stitches and the zipper is complete - I got to where I could do all this in 5-10 minutes, and continue on. Perhaps this is a method unique to me, but it always worked fine and I've never understood why zippers are put in any other way. Of course, now I make patterns that don't require zippers, as I'm over them completely.

That's how I do zippers also. This is the method I was taught in Home Ec. and 4-H and I never questioned it. Good grief, WHO would openly question a Home Ec. teacher back in 1969? Besides, she was also my P.E. teacher and had the ability to make my life a living hell! LOL

Thanks for the explanation of how to do zippers. I tried to make a skirt to wear to a job interview, but I didn’t know how to do buttonholes. My only alternative then was snaps. It turned out well….. until I sat down in front of the interview panel. I heard a sound like corn popping as they all came open and my skirt fell off. I didn’t get the job.

I thought the same thing.....until...I had flashbacks of how many times my rhinestone earrings have gotten caught on my caftan. As a Bellydancer, we are required by the culture we represent to wear a cover up (caftan)when not on stage or actively performing. The zipper is brilliant for not smudging makeup, messing up hair, or ripping out earrings back stage! Now I need to make one...with a zipper!

My mom just folded a couple yards of cotton knit material in half, sewed down the two sides stooping short enough to leave room for the arm holes and cut a slit for the for the head to poke through. Down and dirty caftans perfect to sleep in and lounge around the house during sweltering summers with no air-conditioning.

I recently made a one-size pattern hooded robe with capelet for a friend and my friend is rather generously plus-sized, so even though he'd had this pattern made for him before about fifteen years ago, mine was a little tight in the armpits/across the chest, so I used my favourite "oh QUACK! My fabric is like an inch too narrow!" cheat - I unpicked my lovely hand-stitched French Seams and installed some 4 or 5 inch armpit gussets. BEST CHEAT EVER, fits him beautifully.
