  • First, I want to thank Rachel Maksy for allowing me usage of her footage!
Rachel has a flair for a CERTAIN Gunne Sax sewing pattern, and I just happened to know a friend that had one, and would let me trace her vintage pattern for use (in Atlanta). So after a brief road trip to Atlanta, I was all set to make Rachel Maksy's pinafore but make it plus size! My measurements are currently bust 46" and a waist 38-40".
So in today's video I am making a vintage pattern but sizing up to plus size from a bust 36". Using a vintage sewing pattern from a Gunne Sax Simplicity pattern is no small feat, but come along with me and I will show you how I made my vintage dress.

Way back in 1979, when this pattern was fresh and new, I fell in love with and purchased it. I made the dress out of a matt yellow rose-printed satin, and it was stunning. The heavier-bodied fabric makes all the difference in how the dress turns out, especially in the skirt volume. Now that you have the pattern sized for you, it may be worth giving it another go.

  • @annettebroomhall8617

Dimity is too lightweight for the volume of skirt panels. But don't give up on the pattern. You did a fantastic job and it is very flattering on you. Make it again with a slightly heavier fabric and then you can swish to your hearts content. Hope you had a lovely birthday

The part I don't get is why we are dyeing fabric when there's already black fabric out there, with or without the flowers. One of my favorite dresses in this period, quite possibly from the Gunne Sax line or something similar, used the sweetest black fabric with a dainty floral print and I literally wore that thing out.

The grey with flowers gives a Persephone vibe that is somehow so much cooler than I thought it would be.

I actually made this dress in 1981 (actually made 3) for bridesmaid dresses for my brother’s wedding. They turned out pretty well. I had a very small bust and waist back in those days, before 4 children. I still have the pattern!

Lmao that you also used music that Rachel often uses.

I remember making that dress in 1980 while in high school. It's a great pattern. I made the full length version using pale blue and white gingham check with white details. I remember fitting it to a padded strapless bra, hahaha, because at 15 I was flat as a pancake. I wore a gored taffeta half slip with it, like a flared petticoat without the ruffles.

I had two Gunne Sax dresses and loved the line. The purple taffeta Gunne Sax "Western showgirl " knee-length dress was worn to every high school dance I thought I could get away with! Loved that one. The other was a full-length ivory lace-covered confection that I wore to my prom. I have no idea what happened to them, but I hope they are well-loved wherever they are. Great dresses!

I love how the dress came out - especially as a sewer with similar issues in sizing/sewing errors, etc - it really spoke to my personal experiences. I think this dress would be so nice if used with a sheer black under-dress - perhaps in a voile, with long poofy sleeves and skirt, worn beneath the lights - which are genius, by the way. It would be even more "witchy" and romantic.

Ok now I see why it looked like there was a bunch of red lazer dots on the skirt... you added lights! Very cool.

I love so much how you mimic Rachel's video style with a lot of your own sence of humour! Thx for the fun I had watching this video.

How stunning! I love the light-up skirt! And the piping around the straps & bodice is gorgeous! I usually make Harajuku style or use Issey Miyake Vogue patterns, but I enjoy watching everyone else's style. Hope you had a good birthday! 🍩🍩🍩

The bodice looks great! Fits beautifully. I think it was well worth the time it took to pot the black trim on the bodice. Well done with the size up.

Excellent job. Looks really cute on you, aside from your comments. Good for a summer dress. As usual, loved your commentary on your process and your mistakes. Makes it easier for me to laugh when I make a muck of something (also frequently sewing).

I actually made that dress in middle school as my sewing class project. I had found it in my granny's pattern stash. Really wish I had that dress & Granny's pattern stash now.
