The introduction to the Isles of Wonder sequence of the Opening Ceremony from the Olympic Stadium at the London 2012 Olympic Games (27 July).
Every two years, the world's finest athletes gather at the Olympic Games - a spectacular celebration of sporting excellence that captures the attention of billions of people around the world. However, the Games are about much more than just sport. They bring the Olympic values to life and provide a global arena for a unique combination of sport, culture, education and ceremonies.
At the Olympic Games in London 2012, about 10,500 athletes from 204 countries compete in 26 different sports, comprising 302 medal events. Whether athletes win a medal or not, they can forever call themselves Olympians. The sporting competitions are undoubtedly the central focus of the Olympic Games and participating in the Games is the ultimate goal for most athletes.
Every edition has its own story to tell and will be remembered for some truly remarkable performances from sporting legends such as Jesse Owens, Abebe Bikila, Jean-Claude Killy, Nadia Comaneci, Katarina Witt, Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt, to name just a few.

2012...good year.
The end is nigh
Yeah....especially compared to 2020 :-/
Yes, a simpler time...
Words can't describe the chills that I felt when this opening sequence opened the Ceremony!
A moment of silence for all the balloons that didn't pop during the countdown...
love the muse and pink floyd parts :)
Six years later, still possibly my favorite intro to an Olympic Opening Ceremony. God bless Britain, from an American. :)
I really liked China and I am British
Watching this makes me get a lump in my throat and feel full of pride.
Map Of The Problematique at the Olympic Games... BEST THING EVER.
1:26 - 1:37 is a nod to Pink Floyd.
Pretty cool too. I'm the biggest Pink Floyd fanatic you'll ever meet and my birthday just happens to be 27 July, the day this video was shown. I love it! :)
Nice to meet another fan, wish you were here is my absolute favourite album of all time
@djtrixen from what Pink Floyd songs was nodded sampled this?
If you are a fan of PF, you could be able to tell it.
Please and thanks.
it's funny after months of seeing this...I still get goosebumps when it all leads up to the stadium....so brilliant! :D
Ten years since this wonderful introduction⊠be it made a great impression on the world.
the pink floyd reference though. the pig floating above battersea power station 1:27
It's been 10 years since London 2012
This intro has aged surprisingly well
This was best opening ever so nostalgic and proud Be British was Olympic Games ever 2012 was 16 canât believe its 8 years now đŹđ§
1:20 I JUST noticed that they filmed this in the olympic stadium
The ducks too, they were filmed at the dress rehearsal the night before.
And this part here 0:34
Still the greatest Olympic ceremony of all time.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to London. i got chills when i heard that and still do
X2. I will play this if I could go to London before leaving the plane.
as an indian....this is my favourite intro...
Pink Floyd was my only reason for watching this lol
will always love Danny Boyle for sneaking Sex Pistols and The Clash into this opening sequence. Music that has no place in a patriotic tour of the UK, and that's why I love it.
God save the Queen.....
Its a fascist regime.. Except they missed that bit out. Odd that.
@@howardchambers9679 hahaha yeah
1:25- Pink Floyd Animals reference!
and Pink Floyd's "Time" just after!
Map Of Problematique by Muse :) Couldn't of chosen at better song for the intro
When the camera passes the clock tower you can hear the Time sound effect by Pink Floyd. Also you can see Algie the inflatable pig above the Battersea Power Station, which is a nod to their Animals album cover
This may sadly be the last Olympics were it felt like everyone was watching
Epic countdown due to Muse's awesomeness!
I have never felt so proud.
I just see because sound Pink Floyd, The Clash and MUSE final countdown
This is an amazing piece!!
I was only young to tell you the truth. But I didn't understand how important it truly was. It's only been till recent months I've started to see the impact the Olympics can do. Glad I do though and glad you put it on CZcams. The best place to put it.
It's Map Of The Problematique (
Cameron Keith hey you did spell it.
Cameron Keith Donny be so harsh on yourself
Summer time 2012 what a year for me :)
Mole, Rat, and Toad. I can see them! 0:32
Amazing!
Danny Boyle, love his work.
one of the BEST ceremonys
I opine the same...
God Save The Queen and London Callingđ€â€ Long Live Punk Rockđ€â
1:35 I thought that was paganini
Maybe cuz 96 games were a kick in the neck for a lot of people. The fact those games were given to Atlanta instead of Athens will be hardly forgotten.
I love how this is so inventive! The Olympics made me so proud to be British! :D
Awesome
Map of The problematique 2:15 Muse â„

BURGESS
Una gran canción de Muse ℠wuoo el mejor año!!!!!!!
AWHHH THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! :D:D:D:D
I miss you London :))
Like if Pink Floyds 'Animals' cover brought you here.
Absolutely and I love the pistols GSTQ!!
Only negative for the ceremony was that fumbling commentator...
In fairness to the British public we didn't hear his commentary, we heard the BBC's coverage. Barry Davies is a national treasure as a commentator but it think that was a step too far for the international audience to see. The James... James Bond comment was unfortunate.
I used to have the version with no commentary
Dany Boyle is a genius !!!!!!!! :)
Play "Brighter Days" by Smooth while watching this video! It's EPIC!!!
Love the nod to Floyd. LOL
What annoys me about this is the commentator. Yes we know what is going on. It's like spoon feeding the nation on UK culture.
+Liam Taylor-Warren I would love it if the BBC coverage was offered here in the States. The NBC announcers are even worse!
+Liam Taylor-Warren
Thing is, this Olympic version was not for broadcast on British TV- it was meant for viewers in countries where the local TV service was not doing its own Olympic broadcasts, so it had a basic commentary in English as the nearest thing to an international language.
This isn't the BBC version.
Liam Taylor-Warren Agree.
Y'all still have one of the most beautiful countries on earth -- don't ruin it like we've done in the US! Remember: it's an amazing place because of YOU THE PEOPLE, not because of the glitzy corporate shills who want to smile in your face while they sqeeze you dry. Don't turn your backs on 'em.
Heh, that cutting out of the second part of the first line from God Save the Queen was extremely awkward.
+Alon Shechter
Awkward but funny (doubly funny for British viewers, because of the vertical aerial image and drum sound from popular soap opera EastEnders).
BATTERSEA POWER STATION, ALGIE FLYING ANIMALS ALBUM, PINK FLOYD!!!
you can hear "time" by pink floyd at 1:31
Quite good wasn't it??
1:40 is God Save The Queen by Sex Pistols
This is how my life feels after the last few weeks lol
The girl in the middle with the Olympic poster :D fam saw me at home!!!
0:33
MR. TOAD!!!!
GB...nobody does it better.
It was awesome because I was there to see the reharsals of the entire opening ceremony 2 weeks or so before the actual event because of some people I know in the councils and it was exactly the same LOL I didn't have time/money/enough interest to go to the actual one but yeah XDD
cool
MAP OF THE PROBLEMATIQUE đ
@The Blue Window Frame it's Smile by Lily Allen.
super vidieo
LA was heavily controversial due to the boycott and political fallout from it, and it's not remembered with much fondness outside America. Atlanta was marred by a bombing that killed several people (I'm not sure if that's the only reason Atlanta was left off but I'm sure it contributed)
quite a fan of the unenthusiastic narrator who half-heartedly tells you what's going on in between swigs of his hard liquor or whatever
What is the name of this music that plays during most of this sequence?
The Clash - London Calling
It's a really short sound clip, but what's the song from about 2.15 to 2.19?
It is Barry Davies and he is usually excellent.
@simpag1 good job I was watching on BBC then
The whole thing was perfection. It was us. All of us.
Yes. It was very innovative for its time, just like Ilomilo and Howl's moving castle
0:46 I wish the commentator would just SHUT UP!! I'm sorry but you'll have to agree he is ruining the atmosphere.
It's a cunning plot to sell DVD/Blu-Rays with a no commentary option!
that's cool :)
HI đââïž
Adreinz. Also missed the posters of Paris 1900 and Berlin 1936
Also Atlanta 1996
Does anyone know where the Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt narrated sequence is?
what's the song at 2:04 ?
what's the song - 2:20? (:
What's the name of the song at 2:16????
actually 2:19,it is Map of the problematique by Muse :)
Came here just from the Muse music video
at 2:16 is Lily Allen - Smile
2:19: What's the song called?
+Fi Jones Map of the Problematic by muse

this makes me so proud to be british
what is the song in minutes of 2.18 until period of countdown?

does anyone know what the violin part is called at 1:36
It's the theme music from The South Bank Show.
Tributes to Pink Floyd on: 1:26 and on 1:31 (from the song Time). Maybe I have missed something..
10 years later and the source of the Thames has completely dried up đą
The whole ceremony has been created by Danny Boyle
Who know the song name at 2.15-2.18 ?
what's the song playing at 2:04 - 2:09?
London Calling by The Clash
South Bank Show intro
Anyone else watching this for school đ
IMDB and 28 Days Later brought me here. Random, I know.
This makes me want to be british even more

Probably 7 years too late but just in case, London Calling by The Clash
Smile by Lily Allen 2:15 - 2:19
Muse - Map of the Problematique.
What is the Artist and Song name at 2:19?
A bit late but it is Map of the Problematique by Muse
I can't wait the 2014 in *****,******
What even is the isles of wonder plaque?
It's a cheeky revision of the real monument at the traditional* source of the River Thames, substituting the words "Isles of Wonder" for the much more boring "The Conservators of the River Thames 1857 - 1974".
*This traditional source, near Kemble in Gloucestershire, is not the true source, which is several kilometres to the north. Also, the water table nowadays is lower than it used to be, so the stream by the monument only flows after seriously heavy rain.
