Eyes have always been one of my greatest painting enemies; what are yours?
It varies for me, this can be caused due to a lack of confidence in my abilities to do good work, but eyes are always difficult.
For me it is NMM, every other thing is easier than that for me
The minis.
Parkinson's
Faces...
Like others have said, I have taken 15 years (or more) off of painting and getting back into the game. Loved this video and will be sharing. I will be trying your techniques out soon. Looking forward to looking at more of your tips
Wonderful in-depth tutorial! I subbed and look forward to seeing more painting from you!
This is the only good beginner tutorial on eye painting I can find. Thank you. I'm still unsure if the eyes on my minis might be too small to bother with but at least I have an idea how to move forward.
The breathing technique works. I am a competitive shooter and have been using this for years. I never thought about it for miniature painting though, so thanks.
Lyla, just wanted to say thanks for all the great videos so far.
I'm getting back into painting minis after a long hiatus and eyes have always been an issue. I like the techniques you're showing here, it will definitely help me. Love all your videos and i like the way you show your techniques. Keep up the great work!
This technique worked like a charm for me! Thanks very much. I will be painting eyes from now on!
This helped me more than any other video I've seen, thank you SO much!!
Copic makes a 0.05 mm and a 0.03 mm fine liner that you may want to look into. The 005 size that Prismacolor and Sakura make is about 0.25 mm if memory serves.
Just starting painting, love your blog
Hi Lyla, I always wondered how to paint those tiny an daunting eyes consistently. Thanks for sharing some great techniques.
Nice vid. Painting eyes might be the most intimidating thing in this hobby. I’m starting and this gives me a boost of confidence. Will start trying on my test models 😊
Great video! Eyes are such a pain, but I started out using technique 3 as I read it on a tutorial online and just assumed that's how everyone did it. I usually don't add color unless the sculpt for the eyes is pretty big, otherwise I just leave them a dark brown. I haven't tried holding the mini upside-down when I paint the eyes, I will have to try that.
Thank you! Eyes are one of my biggest enemies, too. But also doing effects like eyeshadow and sheer fabric effects.
I just subscribed after watching a couple of your videos. I really appreciate the maintained audio quality. And your miniature work, of course.
Thanks! Audio is still my biggest weakness, but I’m getting better!
Brilliant video. Thankyou.
Very nice video, thank you!
I've started painting GI Joe figures (3 3/4 inch tall, with an o-ring) and this is super helpful. Thank you.
I am so glad that I am not the only one to use the fine dot pens to do the pupil of eyes. I also use them , sometimes, to line certain things on a miniature. I do this mostly if I can get into the area to do lining very easily with my brush.
I might have to try your easier tricks, I do the hardest way: paint the face, then black, white, then a black line in the middle. And only use a brush. Highlights look cool too, might try that next!
Super helpful!
Very helpful!
This was great timing I'm just about to do the eyes on group on minis I'm finishing. Also thank you for the tip on the Redgrass wet palette I wondered why the paint was pooling.
I'm glad I could help!
I've started experimenting with using clear gloss on the eyes to give shine to them. I sculpt my own miniatures & try to create a well defined eye in the sculpting; once it's painted I add one tiny drop to each eye & lie the figure down allowing the drop to spread over the eye area & dry. I'm achieving better results each time I try this method & plan to try adding the iris & pupil on top of a layer of clear gloss with another gloss layer afterward to hopefully add more depth to the eyeball.
I really appreciate your video. It gave me a few new ideas and Im sure they will help. :)
Great great tutorial! I am building 20mm diorama (or 1/72 scale to be precise) and i really hope to get some nice eyes on miniatures.
Brilliant video. I have painted 100's of minis and only sometimes attempt eyes. I always wondered what the stupid sticky up thing on the paint handles was for and have never seen it explained in any videos - now I need one.
Oh eyes are always so tough for me too. I often end up holding my breath when i'm trying to paint the eyes because i've got shaky hands and it helps me stabilize for short periods at a time haha! Gets the job done though!
My eyesight isn't great these days. I struggle doing eyes as a result. I use a visor to magnify what I am working on but I'm simply getting older and have to accept my limitations.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
I know what you mean mine is due to petite mal seizures and a tick in the eyes that makes it hard to focus on that small of detales but for the past 14 years i still try painting 32mm miniatures and other than the eyes i think i do pretty good
Thanks a lot for these tips, very usefull. Have a good day. Bye
I can't help but notice you featured the eyes I paint on all of my minis in your intro. I guess I'm in the right place. XD
5:50 YES thank you for mentioning this. I've been trying so hard with something too small and it's wrecking me. (Plus, having a shake in my right hand doesn't help 😅) Thank you for the tutorial!
I play Pathfinder, so paint lots of minis. Eyes are the single biggest problem area for me. This was really some good tips. I think I might have to try your tips. Thanks.
Hi, love your tips on eyes.
In the past I have painted the eye black and then put 2 dots of white in either side of the eye to form the pupil. Kind of reverse of what you did...
Loved his cackle on the way out of the room.
so I yelled "no fucking way" pulled out a .005, and dotted the eyes of my model. MIND IS BLOWN. THANK YOU
I've been doing a similar thing with a tiny pen. Le Pen makes a technical drawing pen that is 0.03 for more accuracy, and they're relatively cheap!
I've been going about painting eyes with the most difficult method (3) since the very beginning, some 40 years ago. I had never considered painting them first. So, I was watching your vid and was thinking... Well... Crap. That would have been a lot easier... Thanks for the great content!
Com todo respeito moça, você parece uma fada! Parabéns pelo seu trabalho!
YOU PAINTED MY FAVORITE MINI!!! DURGHUM DEEPMUG!!!! Sorry about the caps. I was excited to see that.
I have tremors so my hands constantly shake while painting these minis. Eyes are even harder for me, so thank you for this!
I paint 28mm minis mainly.
I always paint the eyes after the face is complete and very well dried. If I mess up, I still can wash the fresh paint away with a wet brush.
In every case, I will first paint the eye fully black.
For small eyes (some minis of a same scale have smaller eyes than others), I'll then paint the whole eye white except for a very tiny nearly invisible circle on the outside if possible. So it helps for the contrast and suggesting the eyelashes. Finally I would paint or use a pen to make a single black dot for iris and pupil.
For the less small eyes :-), I'll paint 2 white dots on the left and right side of the eye. So it leaves the center black for the iris and pupil and also a thin black line at top and bottom for the eyelashes and contrast.
A general tip to avoid squinting eyes is to leave the black dots for iris and pupil not centered as if the model was looking a bit sideways. Posture of the mini can help or prevent doing this but it usually gives the mini a badass look like "'you talking to me ?"
Been watching and I love your work but your hair is the real MVP. It looks great everytime
Gundam markers are a godsend lots of colours and fine points
Do you use the same technique whether the model is intended to be light skinned or dark, as with a drow?
I actually flip action figures over to do their eyes when I'm making customs it works great
Hey! You mention a type of pen you use for dotting the eyes, could you share the name?
What can you do for figures with eyes too small to paint? I’ve got a tricky situation where the eyes are way to small yet still look odd unpainted
Lyla will this also work for painting 1/35 scale figurines please let me know.
For the most part!
Thanks for doing all these videos - I'm just starting out and these are super helpful! Do you have any advice for painting eyes on a character wearing glasses? I'm working on a model of a character with glasses (the glasses can't be removed to paint around) and I'm a bit intimidated since I'm a total newbie and can't even paint eyes without glasses lol
I would cheat and just paint the glass reflection; so a gradient from white to a middle gray.
@@LylaMev Fair enough, thanks!
Do u use magnifiers to better see eye socket? I have eye loops that i use to check my work but i cant use them and paint, no frame or holder. I know they make clip on magnifiers, but im weary of paying $30 just to find it isnt helping.
No magnifying glasses for me
Hi Lyla, great video. Can you tell me the name of the marker you use? Is there any size difference for the brand of marker you are using?
Here you go!
Prisma Color Micro Pen: amzn.to/3gjIPFc
I use this one in particular because I have noticed other markers take longer to dry and therefore wash off more easily. Once this one is dry and set with sealant, it would take some hard brushing to get it to move!
@@LylaMev Thank you very much!
She turned me into a newt!!
Is there a guide for painting mini's eyebrows? Mine ending up looking like a little sharpied in
Mini Witch: There is no wrong way to paint eyes.
Me (using a hamster as a brush while stepdancing): I don't know. Sure feels wrong somehow.
I hate painting eyes with a passion, so I usually avoid even attempting it. But perhaps Ill give this a try. I never knew markers existed either
Now my Space Marines will be much more fearsome!!! Praise the Emperor!!!
Really find your videos helpful and love your work. But find it hard to listen to due to the 'A' in miniature is silent in UK English.
Great video! Eyes are my nemesis. Can you tell me what brushes you used in this video?
Winsor newton size 1 and 0
Just found this video as I just started painting minis and I am struggling with eyes.
Instead of holding your breath, I recommend slowly breathing out. Holding your breath creates tension, which does not help with minute, steady movements. Slowly breathing out relaxes your body, which is very condusive to minute, steady movements.
There's no need to paint eyes on minis that are in the 25-28 mm range. it's always going to look goofy and oversized. best just to darken it in with a darker flesh shade. looks way more realistic. using a wash in the eye sockets after base coating the head with flesh
I think the best advice I have heard for painting eyes is to just not.
My eye painting hack is "wherever possible just put helmets on mortals, demons and anything/anyone magical have solid colours" because my fine motor skills are not that fine lol
Well, the eyes have it.😂
I use a micro pen for pupils it is far easier than painting.
My rule... is if I wouldn't see the white of their eyes from a distance (ratio in size) then don't bother. Unless they have giant cartoony eyes.
Games workshop never paint eyes on models so why should anyone else. I don't.
Did you just slather that entire brush in paint? The poor ferrule... 😢
Sometimes I get too excited....
Breathing technique from a sharpshooter. Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale 1/2 of your lung capacity, freeze. Your hands will steady for 3-10 seconds depending on conditioning. They will then begin to shake normally. Repeat the process to freeze your shot or lay down your next painting stroke.
An eye-opening vid. You can thank me later...
Nicely done.
Couple thousand and eyes are STILL hard...
I do not do eyes. Two white dots with a pin and appropriate wash. You would have to pick up my model and stare at it to know the difference.
This of course is for gaming, not competition.
Life is short. Do more with less.
Not great

theres this one warhammer mini where the guy wears somewhat like an iron helmet. instead of eyes, there are horribly tiny bars hiding the face. so freaking hard to get it done properly
