Lorian actually looks kind of cool without his blinding helmet. And why is Gael's face so nicely detailed when you can't even see it. Like, the scar is totally not visible with his hood on.
Gael is just a human, same as the player. He just has a unique age setting that can't be attained without cheat engine (age id 3). Fromsoft always gives human characters a unique face, regardless of if you can see them or not.
Despite that we never really get a good look, these faces are impressively detailed, which is why I don't understand why they add an odd blur-effect whenever you use a binocular on any object (an effect which is even more intense in Sekiro), which doesn't even happen in Bloodborne when using the monocular. It's clearly not to cover up poor textures, as they clearly look well enough to be looked at closely. It's as if none of the designers can decide whether to allow us to look at things up close or not for some reason...
I would like to say to mystify things and all that jazz, but I'm guessing it's more of an extra thing like having andre being the only character with moving lips. Edit: and the engine stuff mentioned above.
@@Rainyjax that's not true at all. in every modern 3D game, depth of field effects use the z-buffer to determine distance to subject. the issue is the focal length. on average, games want the skybox to be hyperfocal, distant models to be on the far end of the focal field, and everything within 5 to 20 meters of the camera to be in focus. that means anything closer than 5 meters is out of focus. almost all depth of field systems have a min and a max. they don't work the same way real optical systems do, but they are modeled to look like them. some games apply a fake DOF on top of this or in place of this which is prejudicial, for example it'll blur stuff in the corners like a vignette effect but with blur instead of darkness, or it'll blur objects but not characters, that kind of thing. that's pretty rare, i have seen it recently but can't remember what game. in those cases it manifests as a weird kind of overlay and people usually don't like it. maybe can't put their finger on why it looks bad but they just know it doesn't look right, because there's not a clear relationship between distance to subject (in game terms, the z buffer) and blur. stuff moving in and out of focus also causes the fake DOF effect to lag behind the motion sometimes. so the vast majority of games use a simple DOF effect. some games intentionally set a zero or negative min to avoid the problem of the characteristic macro blur you get with realistic DOF effects. it looks cool and "cinematic" for screenshots but it's not very good for gameplay. at the same time they want the skyboxes to actually be visible so they usually put them outside the hyperfocal distance. in other words the only stuff that ends up really getting blurred are distant models, not the skybox, and really close models. in my opinion DOF is just not a good effect for gameplay period. i think especially in from soft games, it hurts more than it helps. it's not enough to be able to see the skybox, you really want to be able to see the entire level. bloodborne does a really good job of this. it has incredibly intricate levels and far LOD objects. you can also see in levels like the whole ringed city and gael's arena in ds3, instead of just making a detailed skybox they actually made a giant level. most of it is inaccessible but the buildings in the distance are real meshes, just low in detail. same with bloodborne, its level design is already fabulous in terms of accessible portions but the real achievement is building structures to the same level of detail as the ones you actually play in, creating an illusion that it's a really giant world and you've only seen a tiny fraction of it. the reason that is so successful is because you can actually SEE the detail in those structures. so depth of field is really counter to that goal. the reason depth of field doesn't work well in games is because there's no way to control what you're focusing on. in the real world you can adjust the focal distance of your eyes. if i want to focus on what's right in front of me in the real world (analogous to gameplay) then i can. but if i want to take a break and just stare off into the distance at the skyline, i can adjust my eyes to the hyperfocal distance and everything comes into perfect resolution that way too. a game doesn't have that luxury. adjustable DOF systems in games try to emulate this by adjusting the focal distance based on the objects nearest to the center of the camera. therefore if you're looking straight at a character model, it takes that character model's z buffer distance and uses it as the focal distance. then the focal distance smoothly transitions to that distance and you get a camera focusing effect. the focus adjusts in real-time. but just because something is on my screen doesn't mean i'm trying to focus on it. if i'm trying to look past a fence at the skyline, the fence is getting in the way of the z-buffer. it's fucking that whole calculation up. and things are jumping in front of the camera so often in video games that it can get chaotic, meaning they need some level of error correction and that's usually implemented by 1) making the transition slow, and 2) requiring objects to STAY on screen for a period of time before adjusting to them. which means the whole system ends up feeling very sluggish and unresponsive, which is the exact opposite of how focusing your real eyes actually works. the problem you're having with the binoculars is that they ramp up the DOF effect, and they don't have variable zoom. so however much they zoom it's not enough to see a character's face unless you physically get close to the character. it's going to blur the character just the same amount as it would blur any other model in the same location. the DOF system is usually not even aware of the objects. it's a rendering effect, it's happening way downstream of everything else going on in the engine. it's happening at around the same location in the pipeline as brightness and contrast. in simple terms, it's a post-processing effect - in most cases. so it's not discriminating against character models. it's just not adjusting the focal distance close enough because the character's distance is under the minimum focal distance. it can't go any lower than that and you can't zoom any closer. if you could zoom more then you'd be able to see better without the DOF adjusting. the DOF doesn't care about zoom level it just cares about camera distance, like in a real lens. it's also possible that although the game blurs everything at a given depth to the same degree, the focal adjustment system is discriminatory. in other words it's possible that the adjustment system is happening further upstream than the DOF effect itself. the DOF effect could be indiscriminate but the adjustment system could be using keywords or conditions to suppress adjustment for certain types of objects. it might be able to adjust more but because there's a character in the center of your vision instead of any other kind of object, it's using the focal distance for the object behind the character. i don't think that's very likely because that wouldn't serve any purpose, and that kind of system would require effort. why would a developer put in extra effort to produce a system that has no benefit to gameplay? character models are the most important thing TO focus on. why would the game and its developers actively expend resources to avoid focusing the camera on the biggest threat to the player? that doesn't make any sense. i've never, ever heard of an adaptive DOF system in a game doing anything like that. if anything, they do the exact opposite of that, prejudicially focusing on character models. i don't think that's common at all either though because that takes a lot of effort and computational resources. it's a lot easier to implement these adaptation effects as shaders, and it's a lot harder to make shaders aware of non-rendering data like the keywords assigned to an object, because the shader isn't even really aware of the abstract object alias, they're aware of the model itself which has been delivered by the object alias. of course having ignorant shaders like this has 'negative' side effects but players don't really care. if you play a game like skyrim you will notice that the depth of field adjusts to things as minor as a blade of grass if it gets close to the camera, even if everything else within a 60 degree cone of the focal point is 10 meters away. that's kinda weird but it's not a big enough deal to really rise to the level of the player's consciousness. whereas not being able to focus on actors would be a HUUUGE deal for gameplay, the kind players would readily notice ALL the time.

Honestly wish they'd show more of their faces now. Especially of the twin princes, they seem so elegant but their faces exude they're battered, tired and even somewhat scared. Their entire lives they've been forced down a path they didn't want, and when they rebelled the world turned against them

Gwyndolin may have misled the humans, but it was out of love for his father and protection of himself, even if he were treated as a daughter by Gwyn one can't say maybe there was some kind of compassion. but oddly to this end, I feel he was only doing it to prolong his power to survive at the end of it all. Gwyndolin could've made a good guy if only the circumstances were different and his father wasn't so obsessed with keeping the age of gods a reality, resulting in the Darksign. I feel Gwyndolin was cheated on his fate. No person deserves to be slowly devoured, especially one acting out of fear.

Congrats to me for guessing everything about her wrong, and to FromSoft for detailing characters we never see without their hoods so much. That's utter dedication there.

It's an issue with how Depth of Field works. It unfortunately doesn't focus on entities, only on environment surfaces.

Honestly wish they'd show more of their faces now. Especially of the twin princes, they seem so elegant but their faces exude they're battered, tired and even somewhat scared. Their entire lives they've been forced down a path they didn't want, and when they rebelled the world turned against them

Gwyndolin may have misled the humans, but it was out of love for his father and protection of himself, even if he were treated as a daughter by Gwyn one can't say maybe there was some kind of compassion. but oddly to this end, I feel he was only doing it to prolong his power to survive at the end of it all. Gwyndolin could've made a good guy if only the circumstances were different and his father wasn't so obsessed with keeping the age of gods a reality, resulting in the Darksign.
I feel Gwyndolin was cheated on his fate. No person deserves to be slowly devoured, especially one acting out of fear.

For some reason, I always pictured Friede as blonde with green/blue eyes; felt like it would suit her somehow. Also gotta admit I mistook her hood's white edges as hints of blonde. So... Congrats to me for guessing everything about her wrong, and to FromSoft for detailing characters we never see without their hoods so much. That's utter dedication there.
