    I like this new series of “Eating On A Budget.” It’s nice to see that you’re actually speaking to the common man who appreciates the value of a dollar. Plus I could be wrong about this, but I think it’s nice that you don’t forget where you came from and you weren’t born with a silver spoon in your pork and beans. Keep up the good work, Larry!

Where we would go usually was only 30 min or so from our farm. I often thought about it as the years went by and wondered why do that so close to the farm where we could've had a picnic anytime just outside our door. When I was small joy came in small packages. I now see the importance of what my parents were trying to show and the little bit of happiness to be had from an old truck and my mother's wonderful kitchen. Oh yeah, we were far from rich. • @KatKaleen
    @KatKaleen Před 4 lety +182

    I love these videos. I'd like to add three little tidbits for people on a budget...
    First: If you have a freezer, it's your best friend. Fresh veggies often aren't as fresh as you think (I saw this myself while working at a grocery store, the cabbage was on display for three weeks and shrunk over time as they only removed the wilted outer layers), and when you take into account the loss during preparation, frozen veggies are a good deal.
    Second: Dried beans/lentils/peas may seem expensive at first, but they go a long way. They are nutritious and fill your belly for little money.
    Third: Always look at the price per 100 grams. Uh... sorry, I'm used to the metric system, I don't know what the american equivalent is. Maybe price per ounce? I live on a very tight budget (currently unemployed) and when you start looking at prices that way, you quickly come to find that a lot of convenience meals are ridiculously over-priced. Sure, it's convenient, but not fitting a budget.
    The struggle is real. Take good care of yourselves, dear brothers and sisters.

    • @AdlerTX
      @AdlerTX Před 4 lety +7

      this, 100% when I lived in Austria (food is not cheap there...) price per 100g saved me. Back in the states, it is $/oz. which, not being dividible by 100, makes it a little harder.

    • @TheTrueWarlic
      @TheTrueWarlic Před 4 lety +3

      Thanks for your tips. Yeah most things have a $/oz here in Kroger, Walmart, etc. I agree about the convenience food. It's cheaper by a mile than takeout, but home cooked meals are cheaper by a mile still!

    • @Margar02
      @Margar02 Před 4 lety +6

      To your first point, I think it depends greatly on the store. I work at a grocery store in the US and most of our produce is pre packaged so for example the cabbages can't be stripped. And if the store is a busy enough place, there would never be a cabbage on the sales floor for more than 4 days or so. Anything that doesn't look nice on the sales floor is donated or thrown away if it's too bad.
      To your second point, absolutely beans, rice, and other dried grains are a very cheap food source, filling, and nutritious!
      Thirdly, in America it's usually price per ounce or with produce or heavier thins, per pound.
      Some grocers (my employer included) will print the price per ounce (or unit of measure for whatever it is; like per sheet of paper towels) right on the product signage. So you can compare right there in the store no calculator required!

    • @KatKaleen
      @KatKaleen Před 4 lety +3

      @@Margar02 I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make it sound like ALL grocery stores do that. It was indeed a tiny store in my home village, and it closed and moved two towns over later, where they flourished. So yes, if you need fresh produce, go to a busy store!

    • @Khalmidgar
      @Khalmidgar Před 4 lety +3

      @@KatKaleen to piggyback off your point, most large grocery chains dont use local produce, which means they pick stuff from far away thats not ripe yet, ship it and chemically induce it to ripen. Even though it looks fresh it was never allowed to ripen naturally, and can have very little nutritional value. Frozen veggies tend to hold more of their nutrients, since they dont lose as much during shipping. If you have a local farmers market or non big chain store you may have an exception, but many nutritionists will tell you "fresh" produce at places like walmart etc are mostly already dying on the shelf and have lost a lot of their good properties.

    Me again! Absolutely loving this series.
    I grew up in 1980’s Edinburgh. Whilst Mum and Dad weren’t exactly poor, they were pretty far from financially comfortable. Thankfully, both were experienced Scouters, and so familiar with feeding a horde of hungry, hyper active kids on a relative shoe string.
    That meant a lot of cheap cuts, cooked right. And being Scots, spuds and lard played a serious role. Look up Stovies - not far off Corned Beef Hash, but for my money a good bit tastier (that’s a testament to Stovies, not a knock against CBH).
    So to see videos on how to feed your family well, without stretching your budget is heart warming - all the more because we lost Mum this year (well, we didn’t lose her. We know where she is. In a pot above Dad’s fireplace for the time being).
    Peeps need to embrace this sort of cookery. It’s cheap, it’s simple, it’s flexible. And for further research, though I don’t know if it’s on CZcams, but about 12 years ago Channel 4 in the UK aired ‘Hugh’s Chicken Run’. It was about factory farming at the serious downsides, but showed how to get the most out of a bird,
    First dinner? Roast Chicken with all the trimmings. Second dinner? Chicken Curry, using the majority of the leftover meat. Third dinner? Really break that carcass down, soak some couscous in chicken or vegetable stock, throw in the recovered meat with some fresh veggies. Finally, put what remains of the bird into a stock. You can get so much out of a single bird, and it helps reduce food wastage, something I consider truly sinful.
    Keep on keeping on, Mr Wolfe Pit (and indeed Mrs Wolfe Pit), you’re doing a great thing with these videos.

    I am in that very, VERY weird spot where I am not as old as you, however we were southern enough, poor enough, and isolated enough that I understand your references about things. We did it because that was kinda all we could do as a family and I loved it.
    But because I was still young, as we moved around and I met kids my age and started getting more "integrated" into my own age group, my life "advanced" rapidly for my era. I know in the last 15 years we've advanced super fast, but my entire life has felt like that.
