Hard boiled eggs and pork and beans on a road trip? I'll bet that car never ran out of gas...💨💨😳🤣
Ha ha ha! Eggs and beans...uh, yeah.
My first thought too :)
don't forget plums ... smell from those tasty gas bombs is unique and awful
haha she actually means farts
Hilarious!
I like this new series of “Eating On A Budget.” It’s nice to see that you’re actually speaking to the common man who appreciates the value of a dollar. Plus I could be wrong about this, but I think it’s nice that you don’t forget where you came from and you weren’t born with a silver spoon in your pork and beans. Keep up the good work, Larry!
I completely agree!!
yes i agree thx wolfe
💜
Wolfe never disappoints
These vids remind me of how i survived the 2 years unemployed during an economic crash. It made me a pretty darn good cook.
I'd love to tell you I love what you have created here, I'm a medically retired chef and I love watching your videos. I truly believe you are doing a great service in trying to teach people how to eat when everything gets tight. Please keep up the good work.
Thank you very much Michael!

If you can afford garlic and onions I recommend them for the taste and nutritional value. Covid will not get you!
@@stankygeorge Yeah, nobody will get close enough to transmit it. :P
@@stankygeorge My buddy just tested positive, you care if he coughs on you? You've been eating onions and garlic so surely nothing would happen, right?
I'm almost 70 and yes I remember the family in an old farm truck, (no seat belts in the back, how did we survive), going on a picnic and stopping on the side of the road at a table to eat.
Only the rich kids got to go on trips long enough to need to take food. I remember seeing road side tables and think some day maybe we'll be able to stop and have a picnic there..lol
Only the rich kids got to go on trips long enough to need to take food. I remember seeing road side tables and think some day maybe we'll be able to stop and have a picnic there..lol
@@georgedavis6583 the whole point years ago I think was to let mom and dad relax and not worry about the downers life was throwing their way. Where we would go usually was only 30 min or so from our farm. I often thought about it as the years went by and wondered why do that so close to the farm where we could've had a picnic anytime just outside our door. When I was small joy came in small packages. I now see the importance of what my parents were trying to show and the little bit of happiness to be had from an old truck and my mother's wonderful kitchen. Oh yeah, we were far from rich. Have a blessed day
@@gideonroos1188 thanks so much for sharing your life. We were very poor also and like you I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. Some of my fondest memories are the once a year visit to the city about 30 miles away and my mom , dad, two sisters and my brother sitting on a side walk bench, (there was those back then), and eating the warm cashew nuts bought from a vender. We only got one or two nuts each but it was heaven while it lasted. Hope you and your family have a blessed and prosperous new year.
„how did we survive“ - idiot comment. statistically, you didn’t survive. many people died. You have survivor ship bias. sealt belts are very important you old ignorant dude.
I make this all the time for my son. We eat on a budget but with the flavors we eat, my kid never would know we are poor. A little rice stretches your pork and beans too. The bean juice is almost a gravy in the rice.
It sucks that you have to explain 'struggle' and 'portion size' to people. You do good work! Thanks.
I love these videos. I'd like to add three little tidbits for people on a budget...
First: If you have a freezer, it's your best friend. Fresh veggies often aren't as fresh as you think (I saw this myself while working at a grocery store, the cabbage was on display for three weeks and shrunk over time as they only removed the wilted outer layers), and when you take into account the loss during preparation, frozen veggies are a good deal.
Second: Dried beans/lentils/peas may seem expensive at first, but they go a long way. They are nutritious and fill your belly for little money.
Third: Always look at the price per 100 grams. Uh... sorry, I'm used to the metric system, I don't know what the american equivalent is. Maybe price per ounce? I live on a very tight budget (currently unemployed) and when you start looking at prices that way, you quickly come to find that a lot of convenience meals are ridiculously over-priced. Sure, it's convenient, but not fitting a budget.
The struggle is real. Take good care of yourselves, dear brothers and sisters.
this, 100% when I lived in Austria (food is not cheap there...) price per 100g saved me. Back in the states, it is $/oz. which, not being dividible by 100, makes it a little harder.
Thanks for your tips. Yeah most things have a $/oz here in Kroger, Walmart, etc. I agree about the convenience food. It's cheaper by a mile than takeout, but home cooked meals are cheaper by a mile still!
To your first point, I think it depends greatly on the store. I work at a grocery store in the US and most of our produce is pre packaged so for example the cabbages can't be stripped. And if the store is a busy enough place, there would never be a cabbage on the sales floor for more than 4 days or so. Anything that doesn't look nice on the sales floor is donated or thrown away if it's too bad.
To your second point, absolutely beans, rice, and other dried grains are a very cheap food source, filling, and nutritious!
Thirdly, in America it's usually price per ounce or with produce or heavier thins, per pound.
Some grocers (my employer included) will print the price per ounce (or unit of measure for whatever it is; like per sheet of paper towels) right on the product signage. So you can compare right there in the store no calculator required!
@@Margar02 I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make it sound like ALL grocery stores do that. It was indeed a tiny store in my home village, and it closed and moved two towns over later, where they flourished. So yes, if you need fresh produce, go to a busy store!
@@KatKaleen to piggyback off your point, most large grocery chains dont use local produce, which means they pick stuff from far away thats not ripe yet, ship it and chemically induce it to ripen. Even though it looks fresh it was never allowed to ripen naturally, and can have very little nutritional value. Frozen veggies tend to hold more of their nutrients, since they dont lose as much during shipping. If you have a local farmers market or non big chain store you may have an exception, but many nutritionists will tell you "fresh" produce at places like walmart etc are mostly already dying on the shelf and have lost a lot of their good properties.
There's no need to address the haters no more. Just let them hate. In the end they are still watching the video and giving you views.
I agree. I don't think it should be made into such a big issue whether it feeds 4 or 8 people. The videos still give great meal ideas and ways to stretch a meal to feed more.
Any publicity is good publicity?
@@BOG0690 nope, not with the cancel culture going around
@@KnightOfZero117
Well, these videos are great.
I grew up in a large working-class family. Mom and dad made us economical meals like this regularly and would make them stretch even farther by serving them over a big bowl of rice.
Kevin Catlin felt that man! And when we had that leftover rice it would be beans and rice for days
Amen. That and I don't know how many meals we had with noodles as a filler as well. We were poor back then, but damn we were creative. ;)
Kevin Catlin my mother always made rice with chili to stretch the meal. Apparently all the kids kept on the tradition. When my niece was in college, one of her friends has a group over for chili. My niece said, “I’ll bring the rice!” And got a bunch of blank stares. Lol. Nothing like growing up poor in the South, but we never knew we were.
Having rice, noodles, or potatoes to serve over doesnt mean you are poor lol..
@@gangisspawn1 No one's suggesting it does. What we're saying is if you ARE poor, it's a great way to stretch a meal.
"Why would you want to drain the fun out of the beans?" I have never laughed and agreed more at the same time lol
That "fun" makes my ass a deadly bioweapon
@@raymundoo2879 lol
Agreed. The beans, after all, are good for your heart. ;)
Also I love pinto beans. I may have to try this preparation. I ate quite a few small cans of the beanie-weenies back in the 80's as a kid.
@@raymundoo2879 A weapon of ass destruction?
Alton Brown explained on Good Eats that the issue isn't beans themselves(the way it is with, say broccoli) but that people don't chew them enough because they are soft so your digestive track breaks them down instead of your teeth.
"If you have salt and pepper, you can make anything taste good." This is more true than people realize. There was a time in history salt and pepper was literally worth its weight in gold. In Roman Times soldiers were even partly paid in salt.
And it was never anywhere near gold price by weight. If it wasn’t feasibly cheap the purpose would vanish
Spices are original trade items and salt is like gold when you have meat and no fridge
Hence the words salary, soldier and many other words and place names that are derivations of salt.
Salt was so much more important in ancient times than it is today. The Romans highly regulated it to where there were salt riots.
I loved those trips "upstate" when we stopped at those lovely splintery picnic tables. We also had canned Chef Boy R Dee ravioli my mom would heat in hot water in the motel sink . The best times.
Thanks Mr.Wolf pit this really helps me and my roommate since we're in college and we just blew a bunch of money on books so this meal is really good and great on the wallet thanks Again
Adding yellow mustard to pork and beans takes it to another level!
Celine YES!!!!!
Especially to Van Camps!
sriracha chili sauce.
I like to put in a little horseradish too. Not too much though.
I think honey mustard would taste even better!
I grew up on beans and cornbread and to this day I still love them!
My favorite meal is chilly with cornbread 😋
I don't really leave comments but I have to say this is one of my favorite channels and now my favorite series, thank you 💖
"Besides love, sometimes your imagination can be the best ingredient you put into your dish." Amen!
There are so many people struggling to put food on the table for their families, what you're doing with this series is so critical at this time in this country's history. My cupboard always has pork and beans, and I eat them regularly with rice. That's a budget meal for a family: 4 cups of cooked rice and two cans of beans. Total cost of the meal is probably close to $2.00 or $3.00!
YES, same here! Meat and beans over THE "Bed Of Rice" (heart emoji)
I'm getting emotional.
One of my favorite meals, with a bit of fresh chopped raw onion on top. Yuuuuumy
I do a vegetarian dish that is similar, I saute onion and green pepper and add a can of black beans and some hot sauce and have that over brown rice or use it tortillas and shredded cheese to make veggie burritos and if there is leftovers add to scrambled eggs for breakfast burritos.
@@andrewthezeppo I make a similar breakfast dish, but with a bed of warm marinara, a slice of buttered Texas toast, then make my scrambled eggs with cream cheese and the beans. Dump that over the piece of toast as season with salt, black pepper and garlic hot sauce. (except I add turkey bacon slices in my egg).
When I don't have bread, I use tortillas and make breakfast enchiladas with that.
@NON-POLAR PAUL Perhaps you should do a little research on why Beans and Rice are a staple in many cultures on this great blue spinning ball we call home.
It makes me feel good that apparently so many commenters have never had to go to bed still hungry as a child. I'm thankful that we were only that poor for a short time of my childhood. It's not really a feeling you can ever replicate.
Man I love picnic areas on long road trips and I’m 29.
My mom made us a big old tuna sammich on a loaf of French bread to go from Texas back to Cali and it was the best sammich I’ve ever had at a roadside picnic.
There is no state by the name of Cali. Out of staters and idiots who think they sound cool say Cali. The state is California, always has been and always will be.

Love your comment. I was born n raised in Hawaii. Mom n Dad struggled, the price we pay to live in paradise.. There were 3 of us kids, we had alot of those days sitting on the beach eating our rice balls, hotdogs n scrambled eggs n watching the sun go down. Memories of that time: Priceless.

All this delicious meal needs is a slice of fresh onion and some jalapeno. My grocery store had jalapenos for$.75 per pound last week. My best friend and I are making a pot of beans and using the bone from the ham her family had for Thanksgiving. I am making hot water cornbread to go with the beans. Yum, I can hardly wait to eat tomorrow night! Thanks for thinking about those of us who are making it on less than most folks. 💖💖💖
Beans on toast were a staple in our house growing up. My older brother loved ham on the beans but I was happy with just beans.
I loved it when we traveled growing up. Mom always packed picnic food and we’d stop at rest stops or at the roadside to eat. You’re right… those are wonderful memories! I still pack picnics when my husband and I travel mostly because it’s healthy and economic as well as being a nicer experience than stopping at fast food restaurants.
Me again! Absolutely loving this series.
I grew up in 1980’s Edinburgh. Whilst Mum and Dad weren’t exactly poor, they were pretty far from financially comfortable. Thankfully, both were experienced Scouters, and so familiar with feeding a horde of hungry, hyper active kids on a relative shoe string.
That meant a lot of cheap cuts, cooked right. And being Scots, spuds and lard played a serious role. Look up Stovies - not far off Corned Beef Hash, but for my money a good bit tastier (that’s a testament to Stovies, not a knock against CBH).
So to see videos on how to feed your family well, without stretching your budget is heart warming - all the more because we lost Mum this year (well, we didn’t lose her. We know where she is. In a pot above Dad’s fireplace for the time being).
Peeps need to embrace this sort of cookery. It’s cheap, it’s simple, it’s flexible. And for further research, though I don’t know if it’s on CZcams, but about 12 years ago Channel 4 in the UK aired ‘Hugh’s Chicken Run’. It was about factory farming at the serious downsides, but showed how to get the most out of a bird,
First dinner? Roast Chicken with all the trimmings. Second dinner? Chicken Curry, using the majority of the leftover meat. Third dinner? Really break that carcass down, soak some couscous in chicken or vegetable stock, throw in the recovered meat with some fresh veggies. Finally, put what remains of the bird into a stock. You can get so much out of a single bird, and it helps reduce food wastage, something I consider truly sinful.
Keep on keeping on, Mr Wolfe Pit (and indeed Mrs Wolfe Pit), you’re doing a great thing with these videos.
I LOVE that you’re giving culinary inspiration for those such as myself on a tight budget. 🙌🏻
As one of those folks feeding a family of 4 on a budget, I love this series. Thanks!

Love the video Larry. One thing, if you HAVE to add more water to the pot, make sure it's hot, otherwize your bean will turn to mush! Thanks for all your videos.
Re: spices. To me, the spices are by far the most important thing. I can make anything taste good: beans, rice, pasta, etc, as long as I have a full spice/condiment cabinet. Whereas even if I had something fancy, without the spices/condiments, it wouldn't be great.

Well shows like this help, this recipe is pretty cool proof. Good Eats has a new season on CZcams and that is the show that really taught me to cook because he explaines the science of why you do things and for me that helped a lot. Also the CZcams series Basic Kills Challenge/50 people try is quick and funny and teaches you the basics of stuff like dicing an onion, slicing an avocado, frying chicken.
