also a feather can have stress lines across the feather as they are growing out from a pin feather, that is also caused by diet. thanks for the video. 😊💙

Your hair looks fabulous in this video. Thanks for making this video, it was a good reminder as to how important it is to analyze our bird's feathers. You spoke about how important a bird's diet is, could you do a video on what you feed your birds and touch on how to switch a bird over to pellets. My 7 year old adopted IRN has been on seeds his entire life and I'm finding it difficult to switch him over.

I've only been following your videos for a little while now. Thanks to you, I believe I have brought myself to being a hopefully decent parront to my beautiful little ones. I never would have felt comfortable enough to adopt them had I not had such a great source to learn from. SO thank you for that
I actually only came to leave a comment after hearing and seeing you showing Picaso's feather, I started to tear up seeing you so happy and excited to show it off... I truly hope that you can one day be reunited with him

Thank you! I saw some dark lines on my conure's feathers and I was very worried. His cage is next to a window but against the wall. The window doesn't have a lot of sunlight going through it, so I am planning to take my bird outside every day. (in a travel cage, because his wings aren't clipped)
I also give him occasional apples and grapes but I am also planning to make a fruits and veggie mix to give him every morning.
Once again, thank you for this video! very informational! :)

I know this is 5 years ago. Thank you so much for this.
5 days ago, we lost our parrot (Green cheek conure), that was before the thunderstorm. By God's grace we got her back on Tuesday. When I saw her she got lots of stress marks. We don't remember her having that before we lost her, but by how it looks it was many and intense black on her supposed to be green feathers. We know it causes that ordeal that she face, but because of how it looks, we don't know for sure if she has that, before she went missing. We are trying to figure out everything for the goodness of her well-being. Her diet is more of chopped vegetables and a bit of fruits, and I am started to put more excitement when it comes to her food, like add a bit of struggle for her, so that it will stimulates her, because to be honest I wasn't doing that before, as you've said in the video, most of the time I place fresh vegetables on her bowl and that's it. Now that I know about this, I feel sorry for her and will do my best to change some things that will be good for her. 😔
I wanna ask will the feather that has stress bars will fall off and grow a new one, or will it go back to the original color once she becomes ok?

And thank you for reminding us not to feel so guilty if we didn't know any of these things before and maybe could've given our birds better ,longer lives. It doesn't feel so good to say "Now I know why my bird was so unhappy or passed away." You have given me more knowledge about our feathered friends than ANY Vet I'd consulted. Hello Marlene. Well, you have taught me something new. I did not know about the brown markings on feathers indicating stress or diet issues. I ignorantly thought it was just a sign of an old feather. Now as for the holes, my friend said that was caused from the feather laying on the floor and carpet bugs were eating at the feathers.

My adopted cockatiel gets scared whenever my hand raised cockatiel flies to me. I mention them like that bc the hand raised one is always following me around because of how it was raised, and the adopted one is so spooked by almost anything. They trigger each other :( So now I have the hand raised bird in her cage with a bunch of toys to keep her in one spot (she already had lots of time out with us today) and my adopted one has now calmed down because she's not flying all over the place spooking him. OMG lol.

I know this is an older video, but I’m so happy I found this. I have cockatiels that seem alittle stressed since the quarantine. My 5 yr old has been home more often and now we have a rat problem that we didn’t have before. I had to change our routine and I went to the veterinarian and she did not see any signs of mites or lice but did say they seem to be stressed and may also be starting to molt. One seems to be more picky about the food he eats. Loves his pellets and nutriberries but doesn’t eat as much veggies and fruits as he should. I’m trying to find new ways to incorporate a good mixture. Also I had to change our nighttime routine because of the rat. They sleep in their travel cage in my room now. So the rat can’t bother them while figuring out how to get rid of it and keep it from coming into my house.

I don't think these marks on your macaw's feather are stress bars. They develop when new feathers are growing. They can't appear on the edges like this. It looks like normal wear on old feathers... My conure get these on its tail after some time and after a molt he has beautiful tail feathers for a while.

For a while, like several years, my Grandmother's Cockatiel was not getting any stimulation (being taken out of his cage or talked to) so his feathers were dull and he was pretty depressed. But since I've moved in, and have started working at taking him out and talking to him, his feathers have become beautiful and glossy like when he was younger. I now take him out every day for a few hours, since he becomes very sad and annoyed with me if I don't.
My grandmother also used to clip his wings, but now I've managed to talk her out of it. They're taking a while to grow back in, though. The feathers on his one wing have grown in beautifully, but the feathers on his other wing are growing in rather slowly. Is this because of his age? Should we be concerned? They are growing in, just not as quickly as the other feathers.

I re-homed a seed bird and this worked for me. Soak the pellets into a mush and put his seeds in it so the seeds get wet with the mush. He will be getting the taste of the pellet. After a few days or week , gradually reduce the seeds in the mush and gradually reduce the mushiness till there are no seeds. I use nut flavored pellets and do give him some seeds .

I completely agree. Birds are at least as intelligent as dogs, but much more vulnerable. Only really compassionate and considerate people should have birds at all....but that's not the reality, sadly. I'd like to take them and put them in a cage...a circular cage...for most (if not all) of the day...and only change their nasty water bowl if they shit in it (not rinsing it out either).

Makes me sad that some people keep birds in transport sized cages- just imagine a wild bird has so much space and these dirtbags dont deserve to treat these wonderful animals like this. :(

Hi Marlene- you briefly mentioned antibiotics. I have a ~17 year old dusky conure who was on antibiotics for 4 weeks about 2 months ago and now she has a lot of stress bars. I adopted her about 1 year ago where she was on an all seed diet, but have transitioned her to pellets, fruits and vegetables.
Do you think the antibiotics causes these stress bars? Or maybe the stress from the vet visits? She had 2 visits in 2 weeks because of diarrhea. She needed to be sedated for a blood test and X-ray so I’m thinking that could be stressful too.

Not many people were I live have birds so not many people know how to care for them. Including the people at our pet store. Sadly, all the birds except for the sun conures all have EXTREMELY dark stress marks. I feel so bad for them because they leave the tops of the cages open for people (over the age of 18) to hold the birds. I'm under the age of 18 and I have done 4 or 5 years worth of research on birds so I could get one. So I didnt know that you had to be over the age of 18 to old the birds so I was playing with the sun conures because they were the only healthy looking birds there and I didnt want to harm any of the others. Then one of the workers came over and was all triggered because I had to be over the age of 18 and I said "Oh I'm sorry I didnt know." But she just scoffed, grabbed the bird by the head ruffly and shoved him back into his cage. Right after i went over to looking at the store pet (a large cockatoo) I saw a couple go over to the sun conures and started just trying to grab them. I was literally cringing as the workers just didn't care. But no, when someone acually knows what their doing and is just happily having the birds step up and petting them casually it's just a total sin and I must be sent to hell. Just a short triggering story and why I really want to get my bird from there now so I can save it from the terror of children's hands grabbing at them. This was kinda long lmao
Edit: The birds stress marks literally look like BARCODES. I'm not exaggerating.

Hello. I have a question? We just bought a Quaker parrot for my daughter 5 months ago. We got him as a baby. I have seen this stressed marks marks on his feathers as you talk about. He stays out of hos cage all day and
Only put in at bed time. Aldo we feed him the seeds and give him water. He just fully transitioned from formula to eating on his own. I have tired to offer him fresh fruits and veggies put only picks at eat and drops it on the floor. After that he has no interest in it at all. What can I do?

I know this is old. Hopefully you figured things out through your vet. Quakers are stress boxes. At least mine was. To try to encourage him to eat other things. Eat those things in front of him. Or at least pretend to. Also incorporate pellets, much healthier than seeds.
