There's a lot you can learn about your bird through its feather condition. Keep in mind the changes you make to diet and things, will not really show up until a new feather comes in to show you the visual proof of your efforts. Daily bathing does wonders for feather condition!

I know our Conure we adopted last summer has made huge improvements thanks to several parrot trainer series (including you guys)
Her feathers were all tattered and ratty. (Worse than the bird you showed) (her previous owners were good hearted people and only going by the breeders recommendation for food. They tried offering mineral and cuttlefish to no avail)
We started looking into things and found that the pellets she was being fed were mostly corn (every feeding guide says corn is not good for them)
With more research and experimenting with what Sunny would eat, (any fatty or protein rich foods, eggs and boiled chicken, she would devour.
(I am a goat breeder by trade and know animal cravings can tell you a lot about their needs)
But we knew Sunny couldn’t eat those in large amounts or as staples.
My mom offered her some hemp seeds and after more reading, Conures could be fed them safely.
She routinely devoured them like she was starving even though we offered her all kinds of food including her pellets at the time.
After the first 4 months of having her, we removed the pellets and now she is on hemp seeds, sunflower seeds as a treat as well as vegetables like peppers and squash and nuts like cashews, pistachios and pumpkin seeds.
A year later and she is sleek, shiny, happy, healthy and a LOT less hormonally aggressive. Whole roasted hemp seeds! Healthy fats and good protein! 👍 no corn pellets!

I have a young hand-reared Amazon who came to me with a lot of black discolouration on his feathers like the one in the video. He’s going through his first big molt at the moment. I’m hoping his new feathers will look healthier.
When I rescued my bird his wings were clipped almost to the bone, his tail was 5x worse than this and due to the lack of balance he’s been a disaster between wanting to fly and jumping off the cage. The amount of blood feathers he’s lost has been so stressful. I’m glad videos like this are on CZcams because my avian vet has ran tests etc, my bird is healthy but due to the conditions, I was told his feathers would continue to break until he’s completed molted. I was also told to leave him in the cage for 4+ months so he’s unable to hurt himself….seems just as cruel as where he came from. That was not an option for us-he’s extremely timid as is so to leave him in the cage with no interaction at all was something I morally could not do.
It’s been about 9-10 months and as much as it’s gotten better since he’s now safe, healthy and not stressed from time to time he breaks a feather and it’s a blood bath😭 this whole process has been hard but we’ve created a special bond. As terrible as some days are I promised him we would get through this, one day at a time.
This gives me hope my little manny will eventually become healthy. Thank you for sharing this information!

When I was a new bird mom, I got the great (not) idea of putting hair gloss oil on my bird's feathers. Gosh, that really set in motion a very long process of ruined feathers.

Great video! I think diet is the key for perfect feather. Energy in must equal energy out. Showers and sun light also. I would be remiss not to mention at 8:20, the most educational moment. "Dave" goes for Jaime's ear. She covers it and it "no longer exists". A simple method and so effective!

I was so glad to see this video, though I’m not sure how to help repair my Yellow Nape Amazons frayed feathers. He’s almost 40 yo and went through a lot of stress 5 years ago which is when his feather health, which was always beautiful, seemed to have that fray.
Thanks again for an informative video, yet I’m not sure if I know how to get his feathers back to the their original beauty. I guess right on the names 🌟😁
Not a doctor but I give my 13yo grey newborn baby vitamin D drops. It fixed the chips in her beak and vet said she looks even younger. I feed her birdtricks pellets, veggies, fruits, and a few bites of fish (once a week). I talk and sing to her and spend time with her everyday. Nuts are only for training. When we're not training, she likes watching TV with me 😁. All that to say, time and care ❤️

Are certain birds more prone to stress marks? Like my Eclectus get a good veggie chop, pellet, and neither him nor my sun conure are caged except for night time and I have an outdoor flight net "Though its winter now so i have to wait for warmer days". But he has dark marks on his back, but she does not. Heck she is alway wanting snuggles, and pets, and he is receptive, but not nearly as much as she is. I assume im just handling him too much? I figured being hands on was a good thing since he is so sweet, and calm, and they both are doing really well with training. Maybe I should go get uv bulbs.
Any advice on taking birds outside during the colder months? I don't mind putting my bird's cage outside to get a little sunlight, but it's cold enough to snow here until about March! 🥶

Pl advise me on tail feathers, if they are damaged as you mentioned due to feathers touching the ground,do we gave to wait untill the damaged tail feathers drop,or have got to pluck the damaged feathers
I had it on 2 of my conures, I have 5 conures, 3 of them rescued. It happened on those 2 when the female was laying eggs and the male was taking care of her, after the molt they changed them and now they don't have the bronzing anymore. I'm not a breeder, but I let her lay the eggs and sit on them what was recommended by the vet, because once she starts laying eggs and you take them away from her she will not stop and keep laying more which can damage her organs. If you don't want them to hatch just replace them with fake eggs that can be found online, or boil each egg for like 30 sec right after being layed, not after a couple of days because the embryo will start forming.
Dave's feather condition is very bad, it affects even the tail feathers, never seen one like this, hope he gets help and gets his shiny feathers after the molt, such adorable babies both of them. Jamie looks exactly like my cinammon. 🥰🥰
My little green cheek conure is 4 years old and I can see some under feathers on his shoulders. But only that area, the rest is normal and his tail feathers are healthy. I’m not sure if I should be concerned or not but I’d love some tips if possible, thank you
do any of those still apply in molting season? my ringnecks are molting right now. On my blue one the paleness is pretty obvious to see, also the feathers are kinda tousled. He is starting to grow new ones, head still a little pinny for now but the new feathers do shine pretty well. During molting it´s probably easy to mistake or overlook worrying conditions. is there a thing that would be an absolute red flag even in molting season? it´s my first molting with them and i am still a bit overworrying sometimes. Since usual molting behaviour like tiredness or mood changes could easily mask serious conditions during this time. Btw they do have an uv lamp and (hopefully) get enough vitamin A. They get apples daily,i also some calcium every few days
So my Budgie has..i am not sure but his body feather under his wings are not the same colour as his others
I mean his violet colour and that feathers are of kinda messy white(not dirty).Is it a lack of vitamins or they are like that at the beginning?
So what do you recommend for calcium deficiency (supplementation)?

Hi, I got it right!! My bird loves my hair too and funny you mentioned your eye lashes, cuz I were mascara also and every now and the Jake does do that to my eyelashes and yes, I to hate that, so I've been stelling him in a kind voice either "no" or " Jake please stop", then he says back to me in context, NO, AND THEN SOMETHINES HE WILL SAY "OK MOM" and stops immediately, my fear is he could pull the root out, and I wish to keep my lashes! Lol but not! At least he is learning that I don't want him to do that! As far as preening my hair, he is gentle so I. Don't mind that, at all♥️actually I kinda like him gently preening my hair, not my eyelashes, he's 4 years so he only does the eyelash thing rarely now, I think he's trying to help, but no lashes! Lol

Hey, does anyone have any ideas about what would be causing my bird to be picking at the same 3 flight feathers on her wing constantly? The feathers end up breaking and bleeding so I pull them out, but as soon as it grows back in my bird chews it and bleeds again. It's been happening about every month for a year. Could it be a bad follicle? 😢
I've taken her to the vet twice for it but they just pull the feathers and send me home
Speaking of feathers, my two year old sun conure (on a good diet) is currently breaking out in pin feathers, but gone off her food a bit with it. Could this be because she's irritable, or is she too busy watching the amorous spring time antics of our local native birds?!😃

The feathers will change back over time when the birdie molts them out 😊 they lose feathers over time and grow new ones just as we humans and hair
