    People! There might be an uncertainty regarding the Fällkniven bolster issue. It was only a problem with their first production run and has been solved now. If anyone has a problem with their knife they can send the knife to Fällkniven and get a new and fixed knife which will not have this problem. Chapeu to Fällkniven for the good customer service. Everyone makes mistakes, it's all about how you solve them!

      Who hikes with a fucking axe? An axe is fine if you're at a National Park campsite, or in your backyard. But I've never heard of anybody doing the PCT with an axe in his pack. Axes are way too heavy and bulky. Now, you have to sometimes hike or scramble with an ICE axe, but that's a different thing.

A long and/or heavy machette you use more as that as well but giving a bit of wrist action to it. A med. sized machette is just like kitchen knives, you use the wrists almost only. having a wife dont help... those wrists dont get no action no more as the wife does all the action now hahaha

    You have a saw to cut down the tree. The saw vastly outperforms the axe, and is much safer to use. Then you can have a saw for felling and cutting down logs, a billhook for delimbing and batonning, and a small knife for carving and bushcraft. Each tool is optimized for its use: the saw is the best solution if you need to rapidly part wood across the fibers. The billhook (rather Italian style: roncola bergamo for exemple) is best for medium chopping, batoning, and handling logs around. The knife can be kept as sharp as one wants since it will be kept only for light duties and won't hit any rock, and it's small size and specific use allows to make it quite light.

    • @visin8984
      @visin8984 Před rokem +1

      A point they made in this video is that they wanted one tool that's able to do it all even if its not the best and most optimised for the job.

      I'm testing small axes now for uses such as these. I am also getting ready to try a Tomahawk style ax/hatchet as well. A nice hickory handled small ax to me is a better and more versatile tool. A true 'woodcraft' ax would fare much better in tests such as these as well. Granted, making spoons and things aren't going to be as easy but, a lot of the deficits shown by the DBK boys where the knife prevailed would turn out different with a more specialized ax.

      Or you could carry this amazing new invention they call a “lighter”. And if it were a true emergency (sure still carry a ferro rod too, why not?) you’ll use either your axe edge at the tip (you’ll still have a sharp belly)... or you’re hyper smart and carry a file too and have flatted one of the thin edges... (that’s what I do). Totally violates the ‘one tool’ philosophy - but working smarter means realizing you bring the right tools for the right jobs. Like lighters.

I find pulling the steel back and holding the blade or striker stationary to be more controllable and in some situations when using small light tinder you stand a much less of a chance of pushing it away or spreading it across the ground. If you carry your Skrama in the double sheath and add in a Skrama 80 or the Jääkäripuukko 85, you've got a complete cutting system for outdoors. If you add in a Silky Zubat or Sugoi, you've got enough to make a cabin in the wilderness.

    I know that many people baton. But you put your one tool in jeopardy. In a test most knives failed when used as a baton. I learned a new trick. Make an “wedge” out of wood with your knife an it works well splitting big wood. Then cut kindling. Takes about a minute or two to cut a wedge out of wood and you don’t jeopardize you most loved tool. Cause I know you two love your knives. Love vids here in the USA. The are funny and informational.

    If you need to take down a tree, cut thick branches, or buck wood get a saw. Like a Corona folding saw. It's extremely quick and the saw is light weight. I was blown away the first time I used one. They are only about $18-$25, depending on the size you get. Invest in one and you will not regret it. I always bring a Saw with me now.
    A knife, Saw, Axe and sharpening stone. 😃👍

    you can scrape a firesteel with an axe, just keep the axe steady and pull the firesteel across the edge. Works fine for me

    This is why you should carry an axe with a small knife, like a puukko. Axe can handle a lot of situations and for survival situation where you could choose only one, it would be my pick. As long as you don't have to do any fine carving, you can do with an axe. I do my fires almost exclusively on an axe and only use a knife if that's all I have on me. The ultimate combo for the boreal forests here in Finland is a medium axe, a puukko and a blade for a bucksaw. One could build a whole log house with those tools if needed.

    Totally agree fellas but where this falls down is where you have majority hardwoods (Australia for example) then an axe becomes more important. It is still a pain to carry it just saves you a lot more work at the other end and is therefore more worth while.

    I always carry a hatchet, 2 knives and a folding saw when I go bush. Never have too many cutting tools and with this I always have the right tool for the job.
    You guys know that you can split wood with a wooden wedge if you make one. Start a groove with your knife then use the baton and a wedge to save your knife.

      @DutchBushcraftKnives  Před 7 lety

      +Buddha Mack yes we know that trick! You save the knife but might waste time. We rather save time haha! Only if the knife can handle it.

  • @ians.2941
    @ians.2941 Před 6 lety

    I'll take a well made Kukri, like a ZT Vakra. It's the best of both worlds. It's large belly, recurve, and weight make it chop as good as a hatchet, but the recurve can be used like a smaller knife. It's not as effective as either tool, but can be used in both roles.

  • @Lars1540
    @Lars1540 Před 6 lety

    DBK - 2:00 I think it’s rather important to note that battening a knife in this way will result in a broken knife sooner or later. At the very least you are going to have a loosened handle. Knives are not designed to baton. I realize that some people baton and claim not to have had any problems yet. But that is the operative word; “YET”. Sooner or later every knife will fail being put under those conditions.

    • @Lars1540
      @Lars1540 Před 6 lety

      Also, just to add something too. I’m not sure what kinds of wood you guys have over in the Netherlands (or the rest of EU for that matter), but I’ve been told it’s nearly entirely soft woods. Here in the US, we have predominantly very hard woods like Ironwood, dogwood, various types of oak, Maple, and many others... Trying to sit by a fire and baton that kind of wood is just going to break your knife. It’s just NOT a good idea. And I certainly wouldn’t recommend it if you place any value on your knife whatsoever.

    • @DutchBushcraftKnives
      @DutchBushcraftKnives  Před 6 lety

      I agree that knives aren't made for batonning but I do enjoy batonning a lot. It's a relaxing job to do.
      As far as woods go we have different kind of maples and oaks as well here. No wood as dense as Ironwood though but they are pretty tough.

    If I had to choose one? Knife. Preferably something like a BK7. But, given my druthers, I’m definitely in the “both” camp. As someone else on here has already said, the complement each other perfectly.
