Hi John, Thanks for the great tutorial. I am using Kinect Tools (As i understand Synapse doesn't work on Mac Sierra) Is there anyway to do skeleton tracking like synapse on Kinect Tools and get a better textured capture instead of just a white outline? Also i seem to get a double image in Quartz Composer, any idea what this could be? Thanks.

Do you get to launch QC sketches direct from Resolume ? I only get "static" images, I mean not responsive sketches , so i have to use syphon server on each sketch which is a pain.

Hi John, great work! Need advice: im new to kinect. Just bought one and the usb adapter, and waiting for it to arrive any day now. Does mac automatically detects the kinect? Or do i need a driver or software to install first? Planning to explore kinect with touchdesigner, processing and resolume. Will it work right out the box? Thanks man!
Hello :) I moved to PC a while ago but as I remember on Mac you need drivers and Kinect apps to link it with QC or any other software, in this video I used Synapse, I'm using Touchdesigner now and in TD all you need is to connect your depth camera to your system then add Kinect TOP in TD and select the Kinect version you're using (vers 1 or 2) but if you're using Mac you will face some problems since Microsoft Kinect is not supported. OpenKinect and Synapse might help but they are outdated and only work with old Mac OS systems. My advice would be Bootcamp or simply use a system that has windows installed.

Make sure you select OpenGL Scene as Source in Syphon Server.

I'm not sure about it but I guess Syphon server won't work unless you're using it in QC, for me it wasn't a problem since I use QC and Resolume at the same time by setting the resolution of the viewer to Resolume's composition size.

You have to bind a skeleton to yourself, Synapse must detects you to remove the background, get in front of the camera, and hold the “psi” pose for several seconds, after doing this you should see a red skeleton bound to yourself that's when you can remove the background by pressing space.

Im working on a project at school. We want to mask out people live with the Kinect. We want to have 2 videos rolling on top of each other, so basically 2 layers of film. When someone walks by the Kinect, we want to mask the silhouette of the person from layer 1, so that you can see through to layer 2.
Could you do that with this technique?
You can easily achieve it, which software are you using ?
Resolume! But i haven't used Quartz Composer or Synapse, but I'm downloading those now! Also, we are using Kinect for Xbox One.
Also Is there an updated version of Synapse? It seems as if it requires Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion.. :-(

Actually we solved it with just using Resolume and AirBeam. Connect the iPhone camera and stream it through a live action layer in Resolume. After I applied brightness/contrast, exposure, And saturation to make it black and white. So then it was easy to create a mask with Auto Mask.

hi john, your work is really awesome! so i try to test your tutorial but i have problem with syphon. all these "Install Syphon For Quartz Composer.pkg" files on internet doesn't work in may case. how can i install the 'SYPHON SERVER' in library?
You must have Quartz Composer to install it, incase you have it right click the pkg file then open. If it doesn't work send me a screenshot of the error you're having.
Thanks for your reply! I installed Quartz Composer already. The problem is the installation window seems to be frozen if i open the pkg file. There is no progress. I have OS X El capitan.
I solved the problem! Trouble shooting says: it is a strange issue that can cause some alarm, because it can happen with both third party packages and installers, as well as updates and packages that come directly from Apple.

Hi John, I've tried to run synapse on high sierra 10.13.3 but it always give me a message telling me that is not compatible with this version of iOS. Any suggestion ? Thank you very much in advance!

hi john i have a kinect 1473 model and macbook pro i5 13" whit El capitan osx, and synapse crash, you know why. Thank very much.
The only problem I encountered was the Kinect 1473 model, I tried model 1414 and it worked fine even though there's a fix for 1473 somewhere online.

The plugins and software used might be outdated now, I would advise to use Touchdesigner if you want to achieve the same effect easily.

Thank you for your video! I'm trying to get Synapse to work on my mac which is running sierra but when I download here: synapsekinect.tumblr.com/post/6305020721/download the programme doesn't work. It says on the website: "Requirements: Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion". Does that mean it will not work with Sierra? How can I get it to work? If I can't, is there a similar programme that I can use?

Hi John thanks; I've got it working with KinectTools now but the output in the viewer window in Quartz Composer seems to have much less definition than in your video. How can I make only things in the foreground show up? In your video the background is black suggesting that it only shows up objects within a certain distance from the Kinect camera. How can I do the same? Or is that just the difference between Synapse and KinectTools?

I am finding that I have to "click and drag" the KinectTools plugin from my downloads into the Quartz template. I am also not able to find the syphon server upon searching for it in the patch library. I am able to locate it on my Mac, but how do I upload these patches to the Quartz patch library? MANY thanks if anyone can help.

+mr Zpacely The only problem encountered was the Kinect 1473 model, I tried model 1414 and it worked fine even though there's a fix for 1473 somewhere online.
I just bought the 1414 and I'm waiting for the adapter, I was trying the 1520 model :(
+mr Zpacely You can try KinectTools instead of Synapse but usually 1414 is always required by the apps. Hope you get your adapter soon and have fun with it :)
