He rises out of the ash-covered field
He coughs. His lungs feel on fire after slamming into the ground from 30 feet up. The shuttle he was ejected from was crashed some 200 feet away, broken and contorted from the sheer force of ripping into the soil at a few dozen knots.
He looked up and saw the shattered moon he once called home. The boiling core could be seen simmering beneath the mountains of crust sprinkled in orbit. He knew it had been coming for a long time. He tried warning everyone...but they just wouldn't listen.
Now, he looked around and took in the scenery. A flat salt lake, distant mountains barely peaking over the horizon, and maybe something over the other side ..
This was his home now. He was the last if his kind...and he would ride out his existence until fate decided it was the end.
