6:03 MEGA says hello! But in all seriousness great video btw Jeff, most people aren't really aware of a desktop version of Google Drive lately. It really saves a few clicks (it goes a long way!) compared to accessing Google Drive in a browser
Agreed!
I am on PC (windows) but as a heads up I wanted to share about your drawbacks
1st) the second drive folder icon on the left is automatically added for the mirror option (which I personally use as I have internet issues)
Secondly the offline and file change issue on windows is that Google uses regular intervals to sync so if you change the settings during the interval the change doesn't take place until the next time you sync.
Edit:
You could just use multiple Google accounts for different purposes similarly to Chrome profiles
P.s. great video like always

Hi Jeff, Thanks for all of your insight. It was beneficial. I am having an issue with my google drive, and I would appreciate any suggestions you have to solve it. Saved my day bro. Could not figure out how to make files available offline and it was driving me crazy! I don't understand why the function is not available in the actual application and it is available by right-clicking the folder you want to make available offline only.
Hahaha glad you came across this video then đ
Hi Jeff, cool Video! After using Google Drive Desktop on Mac for a while I'm not that happy like I was before with Googles solution Backup & Sync. My problem with Google Desktop on Mac is:
Alot of softwares have the autosave feature onboard, which actually is really helpful. But apples pages, numbers, keynote etc. can't autosave the files which I'm working with when I'm working on files of the Google Drive Directory (even if I've turned on the offline functionality). So every 5mins pages, keynote etc. comes up with an error message that the software can't save on that kind of directory.
Do you know that issue and may you have a solution?
Thanks alot!
Ah interesting. I've actually never used the previous Backup and Sync. I don't think Apple files would be compatible with Google Drive đ
Ever since my computer rebooted and I lost the essay I was working on at that time, Iâve been using Google Drive to save everything đ
Thanks for the video, Jeff! I never knew there was a version for desktop :o
Were you using Microsoft Word?
Yep đ shoulda manually saved it at regular intervals at the very least, but we live and we learn

Oh the stream option is very cool! I think it's a newish one? I remember a few years ago I discovered the equivalent on Dropbox, and I believe at the time it was the only cloud with that option!
Yes it's kinda new (to me at least) but I still might get my own NAS at some point đ
Hi Jeff!
Super useful the colored files! However, do we have to do it for each folder or can we do it automatically when a file is created in an "orange" file it becomes orange automatically?
Cheers mate! đ
I don't think we can do that yet but that would be a great idea for the product team đ
Great video Jeff! I'm having a BIG trouble with drive for Mac, using the "stream files" option: I can't find files using the "find" from mac. Simply, it does not recognize any file in the virtual disc "Google Drive", even if I check a file as offline access.
It is crazy and it is driving me crazy, I think if I can not solve this, I'm gonna quit Drive. Do you have an idea about how can I solve it? Thanks!
Yea I don't think spotlight or alfred will index those files haha
@@JeffSu it used to do it, but not anymore sudenly. What a big problem! Thanks 4 your reply
Raycast (alfred analogy) has option to search inside google. Check it!
Thank you Jeff!
I have a question: do you know how to use spotlighting on my mac to search the files into Google Drive?
I don't think we can đ
@@JeffSu you can if you choose the stream option. That why more people choose this option! Because with mirror option your file will be on virtual drive and spotlight doesn't find any file on that. This is maybe a GDrive configuration issue, even when you make available offline.
Thnks bro đ
No problem Bro!
Hi Jeff, really love your channel. One question tho, I watched several of your videos and saw your folder have numbers in it (01) (02) etc. Do you ever talk about it in another video or somewhere else?
Nah not yet, because I'm still perfecting my organizational system!
Any tips on the most efficient way to migrate files from personal Google Drive to Google Workspace? I've got both installed on my Macbook Pro (following steps outlined on your excellent video). I'm a business owner with 1T storage in Google Workspace now, but the bulk of my work files originated in my personal drive, which is the free version. I worry about some of our staff losing sharing privileges, so would I need to comb through those after the move and re-share?
In your specific instance you might need to make a copy of the files you want to share, then share those copies with your colleagues/staff
Hi Jeff, thanks for the video! Super helpful. One question remains: How to duplicate the format gsheet & gdoc in the drive for mac? So far I am only able to duplicate pptx & docx. Thanks in advance!! So great that you or your team still respond to the comments here.
Yea Google doesn't allow that yet for some reason :(
Hi Jeff, thank you.
I have added Google Drive to my Mac.
Is there any way to delete the Google Drive folder icon from the desktop? Because if I do "eject", I have to re-authenticate every time I want to open Google Drive. Thanks!
Yea you can choose not to show the external drives in finder preferences
Let's goo, nice video
Thanks Patrick đ
Hi Jeff- I have the app on my MacBook pro 2019, but find that the time that it takes to open finder and then click on Google drive in the sidebar na dhtne find what I want is actually slower than getting the GDrive online with a shortcut in the bar. Is there a way to open the Drive for desktop on mac with a keyboard shortcut or a link in the dock? Thank you so much!!
So I think interestingly Alfred (spotlight alternative) is starting to integrate the search option with Google Drive for Mac!
2:33 add to side bar is grey like yours. How do you add it to side bar? I had to literally create a shortcut to my HD on my desktop to access my google drive because the app function does nothing when i click it. Thanks
Are you saying it's not showing up under the "Favorites" section?
Hi Jeff, Thank you for the fantastic video. I do all my editing work directly on google drive sync (desktop app) and my experience is excellent. but internet data consumption is too high, any solution for this??
Hi Amit - What sort of editing are you doing?
@@JeffSu corporate films, Multicam editing, 4k videos...
@@amitkumartyagi440 Oh wow... to be honest with you I I wouldn't do all that in Google Drive. What's stopping you from this locally?
2:46 I personally use that feature when I am working with files locally that I modify often, so that it automatically gets synced.
Ah that's a good point! Do you access those files from different machines?
Can you do both? ie mirror all mac files (from befoe Gdrive) to the Gdrive and then all new files just sit on Gdrive going fwd? or do you have to pick one path?
Thank you for this video! At 4:06, where you hold option to duplicate a file or folder, is there a way to duplicate a google doc within finder? When I try, I get the error "The operation canât be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." and the notification "To duplicate a Google document, sign in to Google Drive on the web." Of course it's possible to just duplicate the google doc in a browser, but I was wondering if this was possible within Finder (it's possible to just CTRL-C, CTRL-V in Windows).
Yea I don't think you can do that yet haha
Hi there! On the Finder's Sidebar: on my Mac, GDFD appears as an external drive, on some colleagues' Macs, it appears as a network location (different from your "local host" thing). But Iâve never seen a situation like yours. It's incredibly weird. I use iCloud Drive for personal stuff, and I'm not 100% satisfied. I still don't understand how storage (local / cloud) Is managed. I find myself often manually removing local downloads.
Another viewer actually talked about this in his comment! Basically it seems the sync happens at regular intervals so local downloads are removed on a regular basis!
I use the "Safely back up your files" on my server to have a realtime backup on Google Drive, which I can also then access on my phone through the Google Drive app and on other computers through Google Drive for desktop (I see them as "Other Computers").
Ah gotcha, thanks for sharing your system Erlendur!
Would have liked you to open up the folder in 'localhost' (without cloud icon) and show us what's there. Is that where files that you want to have mirrored rather than streamed would reside?
Hm...I don't think so. Because you can only choose one or the other (mirrored or streamed)
I donât use a mac or google drive in such an advanced way but this video edit seems so tight with lots of nuances and embellishments. As always, am sure those who watched will have a great one! đ
Hahaha I hope so too Louis
Hi Jeff and thanks for the video. As you know I am a G Workspace (happy) user and Ia am also a Linux user. So, as Gpoogle does not provide any official G Drive official client (a pity, btw), I sometime use overGrive... And, after many years using the service, I have to admint that Dropbox is far better than G Drive... See U ! François
Interesting, I've never used Dropbox before, I should definitely check them out. Thank you so much for letting me know François!
I do agree with you. I'm using both GDrive (Plus) and Dropbox Pro, and from user prespective, Dropbox is the best choice.
Do you have any tips on OneDrive for Mac? :) Thanks in advance
I didn't even know that existed đ. I don't really use the Microsoft suite of products haha
Hi Jeff. Many thanks for this. As a devoted Mac user, all this Google Drive stuff confuses me! Quick Question... if I download Google Drive to my Mac Desktop will my files still back up to the Apple Cloud? Or how does that work? ANy advice would be most appreciated! Thanks.
Nope, iCloud and Google Drive are separate apps! If I were you I'd stick to 1
Thank you so much for your fast response! Will follow you for more tips!
2:46. So Iâve used this feature before to sync a folder over multiple days. I had a shoot over 2 days and to share the videos with the rest of my team, Iâd just drag it into the folder and it would sync to the cloud
Ahhhhhh gotcha. I'm assuming you have a lot more storage than the default 15GB?
@@JeffSu I have the default 15 gb however as part of every project, we make another gmail and then pay if needed accordingly.
For my personal, it does seem worthwhile to upgrade to the 100gb version

Is it possible to add Starred items to the Finder windows on the Mac ? I have managed to add the My Drive folder and it works well but I cant see how to add Starred. I suppose I could use Tags on the Mac but that means they are operating separately from the Google Starred items.
Yea I don't think those can sync over right now Mark :(
Thank you for this video! I'm hoping there is a workaround for sending a shareable link so that the recipient will be able to click it and have it open in Google Drive for desktop instead of on the web. I cannot find any solution for this.
That's actually a great idea for the product team đ. Of course this is assuming both parties have Google Drive for desktop installed
@@JeffSu Yes, absolutely. Our whole company uses it, so we would be most grateful if Google would implement this feature!

3:29 when you click "make available offline" , does it mean it is now storing the file on local mac storage ?
Yes that's correct đ
Google Drive is really great, which is why I'm a business customer. However, there is an annoying bug on my Mac: I have some important Google Drive folders pinned as shortcuts on the left side of the Finder. Unfortunately, the Google Drive shortcuts are regularly deleted there (about once a week).

Local folders backing up on Google Drive stopped iCloud synching on my Mac and I have since removed it. Best to use Google Drive from the browser when you need it. Wonder why Apple does not have a Google Drive App for Mac like it has for Ios.
I'm assuming because of iCloud haha
You are right Jeff, seriously. That must be the case. Same holds for Google Maps - they don't give you a Mac App and, worse, don't let you scroll the Maps. Apple needs to overcome its insecurities.
Great video, maybe you help to solve this problem. I am unable to upload any format videos larger than 50MB. It gets stock 20-25% and goes back to ZERO, over and over again. I tried everything you can think of, including Google Page support. OS 10.13.6 this issue is on all my macs. Manually dragging to Google drive, no problem. It should be compatible with High Sierra, right? Thanks a lot...
Sorry what do you mean by 50MGB? Do you mean 50 GB as in gigabytes? How much storage do you have?
@@JeffSu Not GB, my friend over 50MB and up. I have over 50 short movies, sizes from 100Mg topo 750Mg. I used to use Back up and Sync it worked 100%. Since Google discontinued it, I moved to GD. I am subscribing and have 200GB of space. It's been 3 months and I can not solve the problem. I created a case with Google senior support, but they still did not find the solution. If you Google you will find quite a few people with the same issue are unable to upload large files using the GD application. Manually... no problem.
