    In this video we take an early-access look at the Aerosoft Twin Otter!
    We will be taking the aircraft on a flight over Iceland, departing out of Akureyri and arriving into Isafjordur. As usual, we'll be carrying out a full start-up, departure, arrival and shutdown, trying to get a feel for what this Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS / FS2020) product is all about.
    Please note this aircraft is still in a pre-release state. As such it may well not represent the quality of the final product. This video is a first look at the product; I will aim to have a full review out once the aircraft has been released.
    Please note this video and all its contents / materials, is for entertainment / simulation purposes only.

    Being a native Icelander, and from Ísafjörður. Must say your pronunciation was spot on. And nice to see my hometown in all it's MSFS glory! And the aircraft looks nice as well. Great video. missed out tho on doing the circle landing, where you enter the fjord on the western side, hug the mountainside and land on RWY08

      Hi Edward,
      Well that news makes me far more happy than it probably should haha! I went away and watched a video on how to pronounce it; tried my best, but figured I would still have been miles off. One's things for sure, Icelandic words do not roll off a native English speakers tongue with ease! XD
      I know! I was mentally kicking myself just after I landed haha - wondering why I didn't take the opportunity to fly the approach around the bay. Ah well, another time maybe. . .
      Thanks very much for watching - glad you enjoyed it! All the best : )

      Yeah, likewise QGU! I’m looking forward to seeing what the final release looks like, the Twin Otter should be another great addition to the sim.

      Likewise; the Twin Otter might not be “study-level” but it certainly ticks all the boxes for me. More than enough fidelity there to have some good fun : )

    Yes.. another great review.. I was so hoping that you would get a go at it :D the plane presents it self very nicely i have been waiting eagerly for a slightly bigger bush- island hopper to explore the back country a bit in msfs, and this seems to fulfill that role very nicely..
    I hope i future times, more devs will discover your channel and realise, that if they have a strong product it will show some of its strengths here, of course FM and feel isnt something that can be conveyed on this format..

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před 2 lety

      Thanks very much Thomas! Haha, initially I thought it was just the beta testers showcasing it, but then when I saw all the vids popping up on CZcams, I thought I had better fire off an email to Aerosoft ; )
      I’m quite fortunate, in that I have a few devs that come directly to me now - it’s certainly preferable to having to go cap-in-hand looking for a handout haha. That being said, I’m quite selective about who I “work with”, as I don’t want any relationships getting in the way of the integrity of my reviews. If the product looks to be high quality, I’ll generally take a free copy where I can; if it’s looking questionable, I will usually purchase it myself, just so that I don’t feel like I’m abusing anyone’s kindness etc. Some devs are great when it comes to feedback etc, others not so much. . .
      I think the Twin Otter is shaping up very nicely and I think it will be a great addition to MSFS. It’s a bit of a “do it all” aircraft and I’m very much looking forward to flying it more myself : )
      Thanks again and all the best!

    I have to admit, you are quickly becoming one of my favorite flight sim channels. Your style and scenarios are always entertaining and while others would keep a preview video at 10 minutes or less, you give us a 44 minute "preview". I am looking forward to the future of your channel and watching it grow.
    Edit- I hope Aerosoft does something to improve the sounds. In particular the engine sounds. Having spent 20 years as an A&P mechanic and a ramp rat at a Beech service center, the sounds on those PT-6s just dont sound right. Granted, I only handled a few Twin Otters in that time, the engine start and power changes are very flat and leave a lot to be desired.

      Thank you ever so much CG, that's very kind of you to say (and rewarding to hear of course)!
      Haha, I'm sure some would say the opposite; that I drag out for 44 minutes, what could be done in 10 - but we all have our own styles don't we and I like to try and make each preview / review an interesting flight in it's own right.
      I don't know whether you've picked up the Twin Otter yourself now that it is out? I'm currently recording a fully review. What do you make of the sounds as they are now (it's always very difficult to gauge them without much experience)?
      Thank you very much once again! All the best : )

      Indeed, the prop animations could certainly be better. Actually, there are a number of items that I know people would like to see improved on the Twin Otter, but unfortunately Aerosoft seem to have stalled out on its development somewhat. As I understand it, the Twotter is unlikely to see a further significant overhaul, but we can always keep our fingers crossed (it's a fun aircraft / addon, so it would be nice to see continued development).

I play racing sims too but motorsport is filled with stress and negativity (Fan war like in F1)..... I just love to fly and watch these kind of videos, flying into the sunset 🌇 ohh man that's life. 👍

      I’m a big F1 fan and I occasionally play some sim racing games, but flight simming has to be one of the best hobbies for relaxing (and I find myself using the sim more and more for that purpose). MSFS of course being a bit special, as the scenery, weather and lighting can all be so stunning on occasion. I think it’s a pretty wholesome hobby overall; relaxing, good for your hand-eye coordination and you actually learn quite a lot as well!

    I suppose it all comes down to personal choice but for a casual pilot like myself, this aeroplane looks better for me than the Quest Kodiak. Terrific flight and intro to this magnificent aircraft. I have a mate with whom I fly Tiger Moths, (he owns it) ex-RAAF , Winjeels, Vampire, Avon Sabre, Mirage, (ejected) Hercules. When he left the RAAF, and before joining QANTAS, 767, 747, was chief pilot of Aeropelican, flying Twin Otters between Newcastle and Sydney. He says that the time he spent flying those aircraft was some of the most enjoyable flying he's ever done, both scenically, and the aircraft. So, it's a no-brainer. I'll be buying it. Might even give him a circuit, and see how he goes!

      Hi Eurosubstance,
      Yeah, Aerosoft have done a nice job with it overall! I think it should provide a decent balance for most, between complexity and accessibility. A little bit of study would probably be required to get it up and running, but it can be done fairly simply at the end of the day. As Aerosoft did with the CRJ, I expect they may add various startup state options with the final release version.
      My pleasure on the video! Thanks for watching : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations Yeah, I just want something I can hop in and have fun with like the TBM9 and King Air. If the Twin Otter is on that level then I'm good. I tried using the FlyByWire A32NX constantly failing to use it because its' too demanding and too reliant on manuals. Frustrated, I gave up on it. Focusing on small planes because they treat me far better. Hope to see the various start up options as with the CRJ. At least that I can fly, I just wish it can hold its altitude properly. Shall be following any future videos whenever they pop up.

      Thanks Peter,
      Yes, currently the Kodiak is the more complete and “study level” product, but I wouldn’t say the two aircraft are too far apart (in terms of systems at least). As you allude to, it wouldn’t really be comparing apples with apples at the moment, so waiting to see what the release version looks like is probably the way to go. I suspect Aerosoft will finish up the aircraft nicely - I’m looking forward to trying in on release and will have a review up for sure : )

    I was hoping you'd get your hands on a preview build. I saw a couple other preview vids but they were eh, a bit lacking lets say, not up to your standard! Great video. The Twotter is looking pretty decent and I'm glad fears of it being dumbed down turned out to be unfrounded! I guess they aren't modelling failures or custom GPS units and the like which is why they've been saying it won't be a full 'study' level sim. I had a look at the product page and this 'feature' made me chuckle: 'No additional navigation database needed'. As i understand it the CRJ can't use the in-game flight planner due to it only using custom nav data which some aren't a fan of. Glad this one won't also be using that so I don't need to subscribe to Navigraph or whatever to keep things somewhat up to date. I'm mostly happy with the default nav data.
    Anyway great video as always, looking forward to the full review and if all goes well I guess I'll end up with yet another turbo-prop bush plane in my library lol. Cheers!

      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před 2 lety +1

      Hehe, well I did have to go cap in hand for it, but Aerosoft were kind enough to oblige. . .
      I'm actually in the process of recording a full review at the moment. Enjoying the aircraft, but I would say that the rumours were not entirely unfounded unfortunately. There hasn't been quite as much progress as I was expecting, between the preview build and the release version. Not being able to feather an engine for example, was certainly a bit of a disappointment (I know Aerosoft generally don't model failures buuuut. . .).
      Anyway, I shan't waffle on now haha, as the video will be out tomorrow (although I expect you may perhaps have already tried the Twotter for yourself at this point?).

    Hi there! Nice video as always! One Question: I noticed the Nosewheel steering handle on the yoke.. can that be controlled separately from the rudders, in a manner that that FBW allows it with the tiller now? Apart from that, this seems to be a very nice plane and it always has been on my wish list, i'm a bit divided though, whether or not i would have preferred the glass cockpit viking version, or a configuration that at least offers a GTN750 in this "oldschool" version. this seems to be a GNS530, and somehow this is just a rudimentary tamagochi screen for me, even though i am sure it does the job.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Havoc,
      Sorry for the slow reply. Just catching up on my messages now.
      So far as I can tell, the tiller cannot be operated independently and the manual doesn't seem to suggest otherwise.
      For me, the less glass the better. So I'd be more than happy to see the back of that "Tamagotchi" screen also! XD I would certainly have been disappointed if the aircraft was all glass personally. To answer your point seriously though, I did see someone requesting GTN750 integration into the aircraft (perhaps it was you haha?) and Aerosoft said they would consider it, if it's representative of a real world DHC6 configuration. Someone then posted a picture showing the GTN750 in action (in a Towtter). So it seems like it *might* be a potential option for the future, but I can't imagine it will be happening any time soon I'm afraid.
      I hope that clarifies things a bit, although it may be that you have already picked up the aircraft by now. . .
      Cheers, all the best! : )

    Very nice flight for this preview/showcase video! In several Twin Otter videos, I've noticed a "club-like" appendage on the left side of the captain's control yoke. Yours is the first video where I could read the writing on it, so now I know it's a nose-gear steering tiller of sorts. I'm guessing it can't be activated with the mouse, but do you know if there is an axis, or other control mapping, that can activate it from a joy-stick, or other control? My guess is no, but I'm still curious. The real airplane must be fun to taxi with that giant handle. It makes me think it can probably make very small radius turns.

      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před 2 lety

      Hi Part121,
      Sorry for the slow reply. I've only now had time to properly catch up on the comments.
      It seems the "tiller" cannot be operated via the mouse (I tried today) and from what I've read in the manual, the nosewheel steering can only be actuated via the rudder axis.
      I hope that helps, although I expect you may already have your hands on the aircraft by now haha.
      Cheers! : )

      The ATC chatter is real-world recordings (from LiverATC.net), that I’ve the edited into the video. I believe there is an MSFS ATC chatter app though, if that’s the sort of thing you’re after.
      I’m not 100% sure on the instrument lights. I did turn on a couple of lights before starting the recording, but I think I only turned on the dome light from memory (ie I think the instrument lights are permanently on).

      Hi John,

      The beta range does indeed work, at least as far as the flight model is concerned, I'm not so sure whether it is visually modelled or not (in this particular video I didn't go into the beta range, hence no indication of it). As you may have seen in my full review of the aircraft, feathering and indeed a number of other features are unfortunately not modelled on the Twin Otter (and this seems to be an intentional decision from Aerosoft). Sound changes between full power, idle and beta seem to be rather abrupt also (although this should be getting patched).

    Thanks for the cool preview. Great flying by the way. Impressive how you keep so centred on the runway and smooth on the controls in the air. Nothing worse than flight sim you tubers that can't fly. Taking about smooth, yes, you do say that a lot in your reviews, that the aircraft fly pretty smooth and you don't have anything to complain about the flight model. I thought that too a couple of reviews back. I would be very happy, if you could actually be a bit more critical and offer more detailed feedback with regard to the flight model. We do see the visual quality, we do hear the sounds and we see which procedures and switches work. But we do not feel how the aircraft fly watching your very informative reviews. So there I would wish for more input. At least for me, the most important thing is how real an aircraft actually flies, and that is a difficult thing to judge before you buy it. So please be a bit more picky, I know you have it in you.😜

I find trying to describe a flight model can be very hard to articulate, particularly given that most in MSFS have not been *too* bad so far (some of the P3D flight models back in the day were way less natural and would have been much easier to critique haha). I'm working on it though, I tried to be a little more descriptive in my full review of the Twin Otter, although I think it will take some time to find my "test pilots" hat haha XD

Many of the lessons learnt in the sim are still valid and I have no doubt I have saved myself many hours / £££'s over my years of real-world flight training, having been an avid flight simmer almost my entire life.

      Hi JH,
      It’s actually real world ATC recordings, that I then edited into the video; but FS Chatter is a good option for those that want a bit more immersion (I choose to do it manually, so that it’s not trying to “talk over the top of me whilst I’m commentating).
      Cheers for offering up the help though : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations Cool. :) It sounds like they did some construction work at the airport. I'm from Norway, but I had to listen to it several times before i suddenly realized that it was spoken in a norwegian dialect, and then I heard exactly WHAT they where saying. I have never heard anyone speak norwegian in FS2020 before. :) By the way. You are making very good videos. Keep up the good work. :)

      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před 2 lety +1

      Haha, I often tend to add some ATC recordings into my videos from LiveATC.net, just to try and add a bit more immersion. I think this particular recording was of all of the available frequencies at a particular airport (including ground frequencies I assume then). As my knowledge of Norwegian dialects is a little bit ropey, I had no idea that’s what they were saying haha!
      I guess someone would like a shorter workday then XD

      Hi Golly,
      I’m afraid I’m not sure what you mean by “no cockpit glass”? Seems ok on my end. . . You mean there aren’t any glass textures, or have I misunderstood?

      @Into the Blue Simulations It appears that there is no glass in the cockpit. Do the gauges have glass reflections, are there any reflections on the interior of the windshield ?
      Not seen a video yet that shows dirt or scratches etc on the windshield from the VC position.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před 2 lety

      Ahh, I see what you mean Golly, very good point actually. I hadn’t noticed it myself, but now that you mention it, the gauges do seem to be lacking in that department (and I think that’s why the cockpit looks a little dated compared with some other addons). The windshield looks ok I think, a touch dark perhaps. Whilst it doesn’t have as many scratches etc as other aircraft in the sim, a lot of that sort of detailing tends to be overdone on other MSFS addons I find.
      All the best : )

      I’m glad to hear that the video helped you in your purchasing decision, that is of course the aim of the game at the end of the day! Personally I quite enjoy the Twin Otter, but I certainly wish it had been given more complexity / fidelity (as do many others).

      Did you think so Rachel? To be fair, the engine sounds were very much on the loud side haha, so I did have to lower my volume settings for the video (hence why it probably sounds a bit quiet).

    I was very excited for this vid, however I immediately noticed it seemed blurry on my screen, and that's because it's only shot with 1080p. I highyl recommend creating content with at least 2k as otherwise a large portion of viewers with 2k+ screens will view your video as blurry. And as this is a review of a next-gen aircraft sim it's really meant to be seen in higher resolution, especially so we can then actually tell how the textures truly look. Please consider for next time! Cheers

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Daniel,
      Thank you for your feedback and I certainly take your point. Of course it would be preferable to run the sim and record at a higher resolution, but that does also mean; degradation in sim performance, bigger file sizes, more processing time for videos, longer upload times and increased storage requirements etc. Currently I'm not really sure I have the equipment or the time to really fulfil these requirements. Further to that, I only have a 1080p monitor myself (though I realise there are ways around this issue, for the purposes of recording).
      I will certainly give it some more thought, but I can't make any promises.
      Thanks again and all the best! : )

    Xbox gets snubbed once again! If PMDG and Aerosoft can’t keep their “word” as far as releases, there is no hope for Xbox simmers. People can play the blame game all they want - MS should just remove the sim from the platform at this point.

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations I thought it was too, but it only released for PC...
      Aerosoft says it is in MS/Asobo’s hands. This is the exact statement Just Flight made about their Arrows and Milviz made about the Corsair... in September... and those aircraft are still in MS/Asobo’s hands, not Xbox simmers’... what a joke!

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před 2 lety

      Yeah, it’s really a bit silly how slow the pipeline seems to be to get through to the Marketplace, Asobo need to address that. Meanwhile all of the junkware gets through in no time at all, as it doesn’t have any custom coding etc. Surely Asobo should be able to find a way to expedite products from trusted developers like Just Flight, MILVIZ, Aerosoft etc though. I can see why it’s frustrating for the Xbox crowd. . .

      Well you can blame CZcams for that one haha ; )
      You are correct though. CZcams automatically inserts a silly number of adds. I usually manually adjust them, but had neglected to do so on this video. All sorted now, so it should be much improved.
