- RingTV's Doug Fischer interviewed Sergio Martinez during the middleweight champ's final day of training in Oxnard, Calif. Martinez, who defends his RING title against Darren Barker on Saturday, said he's willing to go down in weight to make fights with Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao.

Yes, he would get more respect moving up and cleaning house. I believe he (like other fighters) are looking at the financial upside & could care less what others say. IF he gets the fight, he can easily move back up (S.R. Leonard did it).

Like it or not Jr (due to his father's last name)has a huge mexican fan base. Something that froch,kessler or even ward can't match. Don't underestimate Jr's star power when it comes down to fighting in Mexico,Cali, Tx and Vegas.

martinez is not a big guy, he's the same size as mayweather, de la hoya, chavez, etc. martinez started fighting at 140. If you see his last fights against barker and macklin, martinez was the smaller man, and he still won. when he fought pavlik at 168, martinez was much smaller and still won. The thing is, martinez is very muscular, so people assume he's a big guy but he's not. If anyone picks on small guys it's mayweather. remember mayweather vs JMM (135 pounder) who's the bully now huh?
@flight1993transam Martinez has weigh-in @ less than 160 pounds in all of his middleweight fights. Martinez only weighs 160-165 pounds when he's not training. He was only 159 vs Pavlik on fight night Pavlik was 180 pounds. Martinez is a 154 fighter who was forced to fight @ 160 because Pavlik was the only person that wantdd to fight him.
It makes no sense for martinez to fight ward and froch the man said himself he'd fight ward at 164 and ward said no froch won't agree to a catchweight so he needs to clean up the 160 division
I am not biased, these are the facts people: Mayweather wants to fight Pacquiao.. but Pacquiao will not fight him.. Mayweather will fight Martinez.. and in time will still be waiting for Pacquiao to agree to the test.
I think Martinez strategically came in at 157 to show he’s NOT BIG. I personally think he’s a decent size middleweight that walks around in the low 180’s. There are plenty of good fights at 160 for Sergio, such as Ward, Bute,Dmitri Pirog, Gennady Golovkin, Daniel Geale and Peter Quillin. They all have a decent shot against him. If he wants a bigger fight, either move up or move down, but he needs to stop attacking these smaller guys.

Listen, he's a middleweight fighter talking about fighting smaller lighter guys who in their respective careers, rose up to 147 class from 106lbs. If Sergio wants pound for pound respect, he should be moving up to and cleaning out the Super Middleweight, Light Heavyweight, Cruiserweight, and Heavyweight divisions. Going down in weight to fight smaller guys is a cowardly move and not the way to write a legacy. Go up fight Andre Ward and then you'll start to get real respect.
Manny said he will fight Martinez for 150 too.

pacquiao vs martinez would be a very entertaining fight... both guys are just fearless warriors that try to kill you... i think it would be a boring fight if martinez fought mayweather because mayweather would be even more defensive then normal against martinez because he'd have to respect martinez's punching power... he's a lot stronger of a guy the mayweather is so mayweather would box him like he boxed delahoya it would be boring lol
One more thing, Chavez is freaking huge compared to Floyd. Chavez is 6'0 while Floyd is only 5'8. If Sergio is willing to fight a big guy like Chavez, he can certainly fight guys like Bute or Ward who's also 6'0.
if theres nobody to fight at 160 why not go 168? i heared roach said they will fight srgio but only at 147. coz pac got hurt with margarito at 150. thats why he have along layoff to lick his wounds.
Martinez has turned off lots of people chasing smaller fighters. Martinez goes out of his way to actually call Manny Pacquiao a coward for not wanting to fight him. But he won’t move up one division and fight Lucian Bute or Andre Ward, in fights where he will be giving up less than Pacquiao would against him. On top of that, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is freaking huge and Martinez seems like he’s dying to fight him, but not Bute or Ward.
Floyd was a bully for taking on JMM BUT No way Floyd is the same size as Sergio.Floyd is 5'8 147 being his prime weight and Sergio is 5'10 158 being his prime weight.Sergio started at 146,Floyd started at 130.They've always been two divisions apart.Bottom line is this,I have no problem with Sergio accepting the challenge of a smaller man.I have no problem with him wanting a Big payday.But he calls smaller men cowards for not moving up to fight him,yet he won’t move up.I have a problem with that.
@911donebyislam yeah he lost, 10 years ago when he was still a rookie, hes record was 16-0. Obviously at 36 u are bit heavier so it would be almost impossible to him to fight at 147, but he said that he can fight at 150, surely he will be 154 or above at fight night, but margarito was above 170 at fight night against Pacquiao and Ortiz above 160 against Mayweather, so not fighting him has nothing to do with the size, they dont want to fight a guy who can beat them.
back then margarito would load his gloves with plaster of paris. now that he's been exposed by mosley's trainer, margarito is nothing
if you do the mexican card then yes you will get popularity i am a fan of most mexican fighters.mexico is a boxing country so that means money.

How the is it ridiculous? It's been said many times by people who know their shit that PEDs are being abused in boxing. Years from now, people will look at this period and say that more should have been done sooner. It's not ridiculous to ask for random blood tests up to a week before the fight that both fighters would have to do. What's telling is that Manny's camp say they'll take the tests one day, but then add all sorts of caveats or simply contradict themselves the next.
Martinez zone is 150-160 he wont go lower/higher.
Pac won over Margarito, who's basically the same height as Martinez. So it's not inconceivable for him to win this fight as well. But of course, Martinez is better than Margarito (i.e. stronger, more durable). So I'd put the odds of Pac winning this fight at an even 50/50.

It's stupid that Martinez want to kill himself to make weight to fight Money May or Pac-Man. He should fight B-Hop at a Catchweight or move up to Super Middleweight where get good fights. Leave the small dudes alone.
