In Holland, a revolution is sweeping through the Roman Catholic Church and sending tremors through the whole Catholic world. Traditional beliefs and practices are being overturned. The mass has been transformed, hymns are sung to pop tunes, and priests have abandoned the cassock and cleric's collar in favour of the business suit. But perhaps the most revolutionary change has been in the clergy's attitude to celibacy. Already, scores of Catholic
priests in Holland are engaged to be married, and four hundred have resigned in the last two years in order to marry. The Pope has responded by ordering all priests to re-affirm their vows every year. The position is now deadlocked, and some Dutch priests are already saying that, if the Vatican continues to refuse their demands, they will set up their own breakaway church. Michael Brunson went to Holland and spoke to a priest and a bishop.
