- Synthesising the beauty of Science with the reliability of Maths to implement the fastest possible single-core nether tree farm you can fathom which is still able to produce all the bone meal it uses and then some.
This project started in mid-2021 when I was trying to figure out the average amount of wart blocks and shroomlights generated per nether tree and had only just started looking at the generation code for them.
A year later whilst heavily procrastinating study for an English literature exam, I had the thought of working out every possible shape of nether tree that could possibly generate and then taking the weighted average of all of them to find the fabled "average huge fungus".
This method ended up producing a few heatmaps which would soon become invaluable tools for any player interested in designing optimised nether tree farm layouts, including one for the farm featured in this video.

- "Hat Height" refers to the value of the variable in the code and not the actual in-game height, which is 1 block higher
- 9:03: The way Region() works out what region the given block is in, is it runs a few checks such as are the "x and y coordinates equal to the radius" (corner region), is both the "x and y coord not equal to the radius and the layer isn't the top layer" (internal region), or is the "layer one of the first 3 of the hat and the block is not in the internal region" (vines region), and lastly the negation of all the above regions (external region)
- 18:03: This logic system is called a Hysteresis circuit and is compacted in the latest version of this farm (will fork a 1.21 version optimised around autocrafting in the future)
- 18:34: Fungus has a 98.3% chance of growing every 8gt cycle, not 87%
- 22:15: This flashing dust isn't in the final design
- 27:17: I missed one vrm block which is 2 blocks above the first vrm block when you walk into the farm on your right

#The #SSS - Hry
That is an incredibly impressive project. Well done!
Wow hi thanks for watching and commenting that's so awesome, I doubt this video would have been anywhere near as polished without your replay mod tutorials :)
@@ncolyer That's awesome - glad they were useful!
That's why I like Minecraft so much, there are no limits
Wow, just wow
The engineering, the maths, the narration, editing, visual aid, music. Top notch video!
Agreed jkm
JKM taking notes 😂
I think this is single-handedly one of the best things I have seen in a while in tmc. Well done.
It's funny and fascinating that technical Minecraft has reached a point at which writing papers on certain aspects of the game wouldn't even be a joke anymore.
that's what i half-jokingly plan on doing sometime in the next 12 months
need to fulfil all the comments about a phd thesis in minecraft
@@ncolyer I'm looking forward to it! :D
bro could be calculating theories of the universe but chooses to make hell trees grow better and i love it
The editing alone is incredible, let alone the amount of work you put in designing this bad boy. Truly incredible work ncole, you should be proud of what ya got here!
Thanks so much for the kind comment Max and for inspiring parts of the edit too, looking forward to building this on wave (in tree city) with you
Not many people can say "like Ilmango's design, but on steroids"
While I most likely won't be building this farm, you sir deserve high praise for the work you have done. Your scientific, methodical approach is fascinating and results speak for themselves. Can't imagine the amount of work you put into this and hope you'll find another project that will keep you occupied for next few years. We the viewers will be waiting for another scientific paper level presentation from you. Hats off.
thanks so much, i got 2 more videos similar to this planned but that's for the far future as both farms aren't fully designed yet and will both also take months to plan, record and edit
Years in the making and finally these are the results. That the farm itself was engineered properly could be seen by what you have shown over the past few years but the fact that you managed to present it this nicely and go into the finer details for those less talented than you is really worth a lot. Very well done!
hey Mustard, haven't seen you in ages, thanks for watching btw and yea so awesome to bring everything together into a 30 minute package
It feels more like a research for world development than just a wood farm for Minecraft ( btw the video is so well made with furnished finishing, pin point details u deserve more recognition)
There's no way there's a video this good on a 5k subs yt channel
ha ty, i must concur. although when this vid first came out, this was only a 4k subs channel so with a bit of time..
A true master piece of Technical Minecraft. The amount of time, dedication and effort are truely stunning. You outdid yourself and this level of TMC is to be looked up to.
I've never been so intrigued by math but this video was amazing to watch from start to finish :D
that's awesome, I totally agree that math can be quite bland but with purpose, a practical application, it's like the most intriguing thing in the world
@@ncolyer 100% agree. I was always good with numbers and equations/math in general throughout school. Giving it a purpose makes it actually enjoyable to do instead of just mindless equations. Schools should learn from stuff like this and maybe sometime in the future
Wow, this looks like one of the most complicated farms ever designed... well done! The video was great as well!
super comment cheers super llama :p
NTF cant be better than this
dude its unbeleivavle
Ty, and yea it doesn't get much faster than 3% or so for a single core
You can get a lot more stems and shroomlights (around twice as much) at the cost of less wart blocks, the dualcore farm I made with Krebs does that. Dualcore still runs with one player so imo it's not a different category but I think ncolyer disagrees. This farm is still good tho and would be fine to build in survival+has the advantage of being self sufficient, although that's less of a big deal since moss farms exist
@@hampter4017 yea it comes down to personal preference, dual core of this would go crazy tho
Damn, the production quality on this.
And that farm is literally the craziest tree farm ive seen.
I see u like home's music
yes home is pretty sweet
this is sick, great work ncolyer!
Ty Haaaaa
Hey thanks for watching everyone!!
If you're hungry for more SSS content, then you can check out the live stream I did working on it a couple months back:
czcams.com/users/liveqEpyfe9R8NA?si=HMgKleT4-jfDtlz-&t=325
Honestly some of the explanations I gave whilst live were better than the video lol and you can see in real time how I designed circuits such as the sequential logic gate and my general design process as a whole.
I’m a data analyst and I dabble in data science. I’m blown away by the amount of work that you’ve put into this on the probability calculations and statistics. Reminds me of a big project I did this year regarding complex forecasting algorithms. I need to find myself a cool rabbit hole like this to fall into.
Ok now for the 8 hour long block-by-block tutorial right?
finally, something to make a million block square of shroomlights.
More mindblowing than this farm is the fact that your channel doesn't even have 5K subscribers...
tmc is one of the worst niches to get into if u wanna grow a yt channel lol.
I started my channel because I wanted a place where I could log my designs and explain how they work, it's evolved a bit from that idea but I don't think I'll start farming casual viewers with brain-dead content all to get more subs anytime soon, would rather make art with purpose
Amazing video, huge respect for the amount of thought and work that went into this.
Also graze the roof in the background is legendary.
Just because of the amount of effort and calculating you've done, i'll definitely try building this giant. Thanks
Hell yea ty, enjoy all the wood
Damn, One of the best TMC videos I have ever seen, and within it one of the farms that has had the most engineering behind it. I remember popping into your streams every now and again ages ago to see what else you had done NTF wise and its amazing to see everything come together in this video. Can't wait to see what do next.
it's certainly been a journey and it's been wonderful having legends like you come along for the ride. can't imagine what the ncore videos going to be like in a year or so
Mojang: Let's just make some red and blue nether trees!
Ncolyer11: Yeah, this definitivley is math
my toxic trait is seeing something like this and thinking "yeah, I can build that"
yea u could build that u just need litematica and some patience :)
I've played minecraft for year and always wanted self sustaining tree farms. I knew that nether trees were the answer but don't know math or how to design. Many designs I saw were either too slow or need a bone meal farm hooked up to them to make them work. I'm a farm perfectionist, which is why your farm fits perfectly my criteria. This is the first ever video I've seen from your channel, but you earned a sub.
thanks for leaving such a generous comment
You need more attention by the YT algorithm, this video is simply amazing!
It is insane how people like you build "machines" like this, I can't even imagine how much time must have gone into designing it. Especially if you consider all the customization options and safety features. Respect man
You're an absolute monster, well done, I could never in my life think about all of those things and create a fungi farm with MATH, good job!
this guy is so underrated, the scale and time of this project is amazing!
Well worth the wait, best video I've seen all year!
Why did you betray WAIFU ;-;
I expected better of you
thanks heaps Emdy, that means alot knowing what tmc videos you've most likely seen this year alr
This is insane, I've been seeing your videos about this topic and I have so much fun learning how the machine actually work. You're amazing!
a fellow nether tree enthusiast? that's awesome to hear, thanks for taking such an interest in this topic
Nothing to say. You are the absolute god of nether tree.
The farm is perfect, the math is perfect, the video is perfect, you are perfect.
Thank you so much for your contribution to Minecraft technology.
- "Mom! I hate maths at school! I wanna play Minecraft!"
Minecraft:
Insane quality, the editing alone is amazing, the research and build itself is even more impressive
Much appreciated :)
This is by quite a large margin on the most impressive TMC projects I've ever seen. What an incredible job well done!
woah u really think so? tyty
Bro the amount of effort for this video is crazy keep it up man
appreciate it
I've been playing this game for 6 years now and im okay with redstone. I understand whats happening and how the redstone works, but being able to build that thing basically from scratch is unbelievable! Keep going and build more your a big part in the community. Thank you!
not only the video but the machine itself is a piece of art, great work
holy moly... instant subscription. Incredible farm and in-depth video
This is beautiful. Just wow. It’s amazing how in depth this game can be.
truly fascinating yea, and this is just one of many many niche rabbit holes in the game you can fall into
This is a true state of art and standard of dedication!
This is more work that a lot of master thesis out there, very impressive
I search up nether tree farm then sit here a fascinated nerd for 30 minutes. Win, win.
ha nice, and this is just scratching the surface of nether tree theory
This is sick bro, very good job.
This is of the quality you would expect of a masters or full blown research project, this is ridiculous. Hats off to you for everything you did with this project, absolutely phenomenol!
thanks! might actually end up being more work then what i'll spend on my thesis in a couple years..
Extremely high quality video, I´m impressed!
thanks alot! glad you liked it
Just over 5 minutes into this video and it’s already the best Minecraft video I’ve ever watched by far. Well done!
That's quite a wrap thank you!
i have never, in the entirety of my life, felt so captivated and continuously impressed by any single project before.
the amount of technical knowledge + skill, community resources, troubleshooting, debugging, as well as just the raw amount of *time* put into one project, is a breathtaking masterpiece.
not too mention the quality and work put into editing all this into a comprehensive and [relatively] short video. congrats man, this is insane 🎉🤍
wow that's a big wrap tysm ❤
yo this is is crazily editted, well put together, and quite genius
you are THE fungi enthusiast
thank you thank you, did you have a favourite part?
@@ncolyer even though I didn't understand most of the math, i thought the portions showcasing the programs and heatmaps were cool
this is so impressive
Wow... just Wow! Amazing job!
glad you liked it so much
Now I want to build it! But... I don't really need it... just for fun of having over powered redstone farm 😅
just for fun is the best reason you can have, i say go for it
You are clearly insane.
As an engineer I also love this more than I am willing to admit...
clinically insane yes, am also trying to become an engineer whilst doing this lol. it's alotta fun tho
@@ncolyer I'd hire you in an instant. Not for Minecraft though, but you certainly know how to engineer. :D
that's affirming ty
This is gonna be a really epic video, i know that already. Ncolyor, thank you for the effort of doing all of it!
my pleasure
Incredible!
Man it's so amazing congrats
Great job! Proud to see it out
thanks for providing feedback on it and reviewing it :)
That is crazy man! How much time and knowledge you put into that. 😮 thank you!
Anytime
the plants versus zombies soundtrack at 17:00 is absolutely legendary
This is awesome. I will 100% build this on my next world.
sounds good, make sure u have a look through the User guide too once you've built it
Wow incredible and underrated video !
So here is my comment to tickle the algorithm. Even if i'm just a newbie in redstone and farm automation, you did a great job explaining this with easy words to understand. Well done !
ah i greatly appreciate u leaving this comment behind after watching the vid. glad to hear you understood some bits of the explanation too :)
20:35 Flow chart. The more I watch this, the more I'm amazed by the design. I was using comparators facing into droppers triggered by two observers facing each other and it would only drop 8 into each composter at a time. I had 12 composters. I had to use 20 stem growing spots just to keep it going for a few hours because I wasn't getting the extra bomemeal from a roots farm! This is pretty amazing!
awesome ty
9000 shroomlight/hour ? Sign me up !!
And fireproof wood galore
extemely well made, along with explanations that anyone can understand. Amazing video!
Fun to see this with how much time you have put into it! Congrats
cheers manrock, thanks for checking this out
This is insane dude
This is insane, wish I had the patience to build that on my survival server. But even if I did, servers are often very messy when it comes with precise redstone ticks
3b1b-style animations and presentation is very nice
Amazing project
cheers, glad to finally put the math to work
Dang, what a great video and build. This is some very impressive stuff. You have my subscription, can't wait to see what you do next!
Thanks a lot for the support, am currently working on a chorus farm that uses a similar amount of math as this :p
great video. i felt like i was taking a final exam for a class that i've never been to in my life. great video
awesome to hear that, i hope u passed :p (jk i don't expect anyone to retain more than like 30% of what's talked about in this on a first viewing)
I don't know why this video has so small amount of views but it's great!
My new favourite content.
This ist technical Minecraft at it't absolute best. The amount of work that went into the math, the farm design and so on is just beyond insane
I absolutly hate math, but this video was incredibly interesting for me and that reall, really suprized me in the best way possible. The farm is also perfect for my world as well, cuz I need over 100k pistons and I was really afraid of the bonemeal farming and this is self sustaining. If you're wondering why I need 100k pistons, its cuz I'm mentally insane
Amazing! This thing is an incredible magnum opus from a top-tier Technical Minecraft engineer.
thanks! it's part 2 of a 4 part saga on nether tree science, so stay tuned :)
it's really very very beautiful how you explained it, congratulations
thanks!
Amazing video!
gracias!
Bit late to this as I have had a break from Minecraft recently but wanted to say your farms are amazing and you never fail to disappoint in pushing the envelope of whats technically possible. Good job.
thanks for returning to make this comment, I greatly appreciate that
@@ncolyer your welcome
Great video!
thank you!
Great Video !👍
Glad you liked it!
Awesome showcase of applied informatics
thanks
You definitely get a follow for this!
Mind-blowing and extremely well presented. Thank you for sharing this amazing project.
np, been sitting on this stuff for ages and have been aching to share it in a more digestible format than random rants on discord
@@ncolyer Well, mission accomplished, although much of the maths was beyond my level of comprehension, but I did understand the underlying principles.
Oh, and I'm definitely going to build it on my server, of course crediting you.
oh awesome, lmk if you run into any issues with it
@@ncolyer Thanks.
This is really cool

The editing is so cool...
thanks! took around 6 hours to edit each minute of this video so that's much appreciated
Amazing!
this video is amazing
you're amazing
I made it in Survival and it works very well and is great! Thanks for a great piece of equipment!

i like your words magic man
Such a genius man lived ur work❤❤
thank you mate and for subscribing too :)
I watched all of that and realized it was 30 mins only when you mentioned it at the end!!! Insane ncolyer|
that's legendary to hear, spent ages polishing and working in the pacing for this film so glad it was noticeable, or I should say _wasn't_ noticeable
hhahah true, best part was the math :)@@ncolyer
incredible bro
Thanks 🔥
3:10 great thought process :D
yea, basically just taking the weighted average of all the different types of nether trees
Masterpiece
when math was mathin too much that i was flabbergasted
just subbed, very underrated !
good descion thanks :)
