What I love most about Dimash is his genre defying attitude to music. You never know what he's going to do next, in the first month of this year we saw a full on operatic duet with Maestro Placido Domingo to the release of his latest MV When I've Got You which is a blues/rock combo.
He is the most humble genuine guy who has never let stardom go to his head and he makes his fans (his Dears) proud of him every single day.

His popularity quickly grew and he was discovered by the entire world and soon became a legend at an early age. Dimash is a phenomenon, six octaves and two semitones. His low end is unbelievable. Not someone I listen to but you have to have respect for his talent. He’s one of a kind.

Oh yes, Dimash won the massive Chinese audience and is huge megastar there today. He has been invited to perform at all the major festivals and functions since 2017 so there are many great performances of him solo and with other major Chinese singers. His first hit single in China was the theme for the movie Battle of Memories called "Eternal Memories". He sings this Mandarin song at each of his solo concerts (so far) along with Autumn Strong another very popular Mandarin song. Just to give you an idea of how his popularity exploded after this performance, he was booked at venue after venue in China. When he released his album ID in 2019, it went Platinum in 37 seconds... and triple-platinum in an hour. How many artists can say they've done that? He was amazing in 2017, but he's only gotten better since then. His range has gotten bigger, both ways. From bass to whistle, he's flawless in every octave. So many listeners are emotionally moved by his singing. I have seen music professionals to casual listeners cry, swear in astonishment, take off their headphones and walk out of the room, fall off their chairs (3), etc. Many fans cry every day. IMO his gift is helping to heal the planet. I’m in Hungary right now, and will attend my first live concert of Dimash’s on May 4th at age 74. Loved your comments and honest appreciation of a wonderful musical genius I have loved since SOS in 2017.
He used to use this song, (which was from a 1978 French Canadian rock opera), in competitions, because it demonstrated part of his extreme vocal range quickly. He can go much lower, and much higher than this, but I still think this song is the best introduction to Dimash. Here, he went up to an E6th, but hit a D8th whistle note live in one song. That's higher than a piano goes. Since then he has done a lot of work expanding his lower range. The next recommendation used to be "Sinful Passion" from the New Wave concert in 2018, but there are many more recent examples, like "Stranger" from 2021, which is in English, but often seems to require some filtering because of copyright issues.

He was actually extremely grateful to the show and the Producers, and has said he learned so much from the older experienced singers he was competing with. He has even brought some of them in to perform in his own concerts as well, and has been a repeat guest on the show. One comment that summed it up was that he mentioned the practice and workload for all the performances he did on the show was amazing training for him, and a real challenge -- and he's mentioned it was one of the best learning experiences.

Actually, most reactors male or female who listen to this song (and others sometimes) ,do tear up and get goosebumps-it's that powerful of a song. He does do all types of music, but they almost all will have some high notes in them 💜. There are quite a few metal reactors that love his music-a few even went to one of his concerts in Europe. I had assumed that Lisa Gerrard and/or David Hykes was the voice to beat, but this gentleman just said to move over and make room. The three are advanced tones of voice, yet each in their own lane. Dimash' range is preternatural. Especially at the high end. Campbell Vertesi has the superior basso profundo low end covered. Dimash also has some of that exotic quality of a Meredith Monk, a Bjork, A Kiri Te Kanawa, a Dawn Upshaw or, peradventure, a Diva like Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez. Good choice, Steve! BTW...the other folks who attempt this song are also quite good as well.

The song "SOS" is from the Canadian-French cyberpunk rock opera "Starmania" written in 1976 with music by Michel Berger and book and lyrics by Luc Plamondon.. sung by Dimash in French. The song reflects feelings of despair and being depressed with life and refers to the singer wanting to be a bird to see the world from above. Some believe that the lyrics at the end, "Sleep child.. sleep," refer to 'ending it all.'

He tragically died at 23 from cystic fibrosis in 2007 and was considered a national treasure of Canada and France.. and Dimash loved him as well. "It talks about someone who is doubting their life and existence. They would like to know why things change and happen in life. That person doesn't want to live like that anymore as they have had enough. They wish they could switch bodies and get away from the hardness of life. This song also represents a story that leads off to suicidal thoughts and suicide itself. In the first verse, when it says 'pourquoi je vis, pourquoi je meur' it represents the thought that someone might have about why even bother live if you are going to cry anyways. There are lots of opposite sentence meaning that for example, why laugh then cry or why dark then bright. When it refers to them wanting to leave earth and become a bird it means to be free and do whatever they want and to be able to see life from another perspective or point of view. There are a few little sentences easy to spot but a big meaning hiding behind them, for example 'dodo l'enfant do' can either mean to enjoy life at a young age as there is complicated stuff ahead or dodo might mean sleep which means death in a sad way. I hope you liked my explanation, my grandpa taught me it when I was younger cause they are friends with the young (dead now) singer 'Gregory Lemachal's grandparents!"
As it's a well known song, from Starmania, the explanation is that he finds the body of his lover, who has committed suicide and he is pondering if life is worth living. At the end he says, Sleep, child sleep, to say goodbye.

He got me right away back then. Years ago this beautiful young man sang with a heavenly voice. Dimash was the winner but it didn't matter because he went on to be a world talent. He is an amazing person.

Dimash worked hard on every aspect of his craft, practicing it non-stop every day since he was 5. In this, he studied the greats of this day, including one of his idols, Lara Fabian. He covered several of her songs (Adagio, Mademoiselle Hyde, Love is just a dream, Love of tired swans...) and sang with her at least three times I'm aware of. You will garner a large number of subscribers (like myself) as you go down the Dimash rabbit hole, as we, his fans (he calls us "dears") love not just his talent, but also his character and his humility despite his enormous talent. Lara Fabian's fans similarly adore her. Congratulations, you just witnessed the greatest technical vocalist alive. He is a twenty-nine year old multi-faceted artist with a soul of a thousand years, who hails from Kazakhstan. He sings in 16 different languages (speaks Kazakh and Russian fluently, some English, and a little Mandarin), plays 8 musical instruments and is currently working on his PhD in musicology (has a Masters in composition). He’s been training since the age of 5, has a 7 octave range, has absolute pitch, and is an amazingly humble and kind man. His mother is a classically trained singer and his father is a singer and producer. He sings almost every genre (even raps) He has many recent performances, but I would highly recommend "Sinful Passion" 2018, "Stranger" 2021,"Olimpico" 2019 link on Igor Krutoy's (composer that came out of retirement to work with Dimash) CZcams channel, "Adagio" from The Singer 2017, "Ikanaide" 2021 Tokyo Jazz Festival, and "Ave Maria" 2021 at New Wave. After digesting those performances, I can't stress enough my recommendation for one of his most recent songs and music video (mini movie) the artistic masterpiece "The Story of One Sky" that he wrote the screenplay for and spent 3 years composing the music for, which displays a lot of his range (not all) and soooo many vocal techniques and dynamics, including sub harmonics, whistle register, bass, tenor, baritone, classical, jazz, pop, rock and unreal metal screams....and unbelievable dramatic acting. I think of him as a good medicine man & feel like he's in front of a fire in the old days, telling us good ways to do things. He draws people in. He works for peace & puts his money where his mouth is. Are those your illustrations on the wall? The song comes from the famous Canadian-French rock opera 'Starmania' (1978) and is known in the English-speaking world as Tycoon (1995). Music: Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon (French original text). The English adaptation is by Tim Rice.
That's how it all started: In 2017 Dimash received a wildcard for the “The Singer” competition in China. He was the youngest participant ever (22 years old). Foreign participants were actually forbidden at that time. The director ignored the ban, believing Dimash would only stay 1 or 2 episodes and then go home.
This competition is not a talent show. Only professional, award-winning singers participate. Nobody knew or heard Dimash before and he had to start first ... and after his first song "SOS" Dimash captured the hearts of over 600 million viewers and a mega-star was born overnight. The next day bodyguards were at his door and now he is a superstar but without airs... just our Dimash.
The competition consisted of 14 rounds over 4 months. The jury consisted of 500 spectators who knew music, not just your average "Joe". They were well screened to be sure they would be able to judge the musicians fairly and competently. With up to 1 billion people watching this TV program and international interest was aroused. The performances were uploaded to CZcams ... and so we became Dimash's Dears.
The Chinese organizers planned... but Dimash came, sang and stayed ... for the next 3 years in China ... but he only finished second in the competition because he is not Chinese (conditions have changed: 2018, Jessie J. Won).

I first saw Dimash about 3 years ago and this was the clip that just popped up on my fb feed. I had no idea who/what ..I just sat and listened . I sobbed ... just sat and sobbed. Had no idea of the lyrics ... what he infused this song with moved my soul. Like you , I cried. I love watching reactions .... the shock and surprise ..and I always smile and think oh just wait ..there is soooo much more. He is a man of integrity and very humble .

You can watch the entire programs. After they came out in English, they usually translated the subtitles into English for us to watch the shows on CZcams. "The Singer" is the best music competition show I've ever seen because they were all professionals, invited to come. They weren't insulted by judges. The votes were by ballot from the studio audience. And even though Dimash was a threat to them, they all admired his talent and were kind, many of them becoming friends. It wasn't so easy since Dimash didn't speak much English yet and even less Chinese. He has learned so much in addition to all his advanced music training.

All 3 are true, sad stories. Daididau is a very special and important Qazaq song. After The Singer, he had a big concert Qazaqstan, called Bastau where he does a great performance of it that has to be seen to be believed. He was overwhelmed that the fans, called Dears, knew his songs and sang them in his language, even tho they were from many different countries.
Another great performance at The Singer is Adagio.
Plus, he does Not consider himself a "star" , although he is extremely talented (gifted), highly intelligent and weĺl trained AND he is very humble, kind, generous, patriotic and anti-war. You will see that as you continue your journey into Dimashland.
