  • Therizinosaurs are some of the strangest dinosaurs to have ever existed - so strange that for a long time palaeontologists just didn't know what they were or how they evolved.

Just wanted to thank you for mentioning that many traditionally herbivorous animals do eat small animals and insects when they can get it. That's a good observation, evolution is driven by niches, so it very well may have filled the opposite niche within the ecosystems it lived in - even being related to Trex subfamily. Therizinosaur was likely a main food source for a lot of predators, there was probably a lot of them judging from how often their fossils show up, and they seemed to be highly adaptive to their surroundings. These were some very cool and important creatures! :D

Interesting theory. We often see big claws like that used for digging or hanging from branches. Have any dinosaurs been identified as insect eating? You'd also expect dino to have long tongue or different mouth structure like other convergent ant eating animals - i would think the tongue is possible.

I think therizinosaurs have changed our understanding of dinosaurs just as much as feathered raptors and nesting hills.
They showed that evolution would make dinosaurs not only majestic or terrifying, but also weird. Ungodly weird.

Therizinosaurids have always been fascinating to me. When first discovered, only the giant clawed arms were featured in National Geographic. I thought it was a massive, t-rex like theropod with big arms. It's amazing years later that yes, they were theropods, but with odd, sauropod-like traits, that were herbivores, not carnivores.
