Did T. rex Have Lips?

  • The dinosaur lip debate is a fascinating - if slightly controversial - discussion. Did non-bird dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus have lips that covered their teeth, or were they exposed like a crocodile?

In other zoological news, a recent report has shown that a mountain of proof exists showing homosexuality occurs quite naturally across a wide spectrum of the animal kingdom, and paleontologists have now confirmed the discovery of irrefutable evidence of the existence of two new species of dinosaurs that engaged in exuberant lesbian behavior, to the point of exhaustion.
Both the likkalotopus and the dammatwahtosaur lived in a shoreline environment, and were equally at home on land and in the sea. Both were expert divers and could stay down for several minutes before coming up for air; voraciously eating tuna, the illusive red snapper, and the giant prehistoric bearded clam.

I kinda imagine it to be like the monitor lizards, with the kind of hidden teeth when they open their mouth, because you uave to also think about the muscle, and other types of tissue in the mouth, and also like he said in the video, the general consensus in nature if you have teeth, is to have lips also. You could also look at the tooth and skull structure of water monitors also to see that they are extremely similar in the way the teeth look, and how the jaw looks too.

@@annafrans6714 that's not what happened. When you hear that t rex was related to chickens, what they mean is that chickens are the closest living relatives, but by a very long shot. Early chickens (or their ancestors) already existed as a group of extremely early dinobirds by the time t rex came around. The group that the chicken's ancestors came from actually split from the ancestors of the tyrannosaurs between the jurassic and the very early cretaceous. Chickens may be the closest living relatives of t rex, but that doesn't mean they're the descendants of it. Also, the only reason birds exist at all is because smaller therapods and early birds survived the apocalypse at the end of the cretaceous, while all the large therapods bigger than a dog were killed off by the disasters, including pretty much every member of tyrannosauridae
Saying that chickens are descendants of t rex is like saying that humans are descended from lemurs. They share DNA, but they're very far off from each other on the evolution tree.

In all the arguments I've heard against lips because the 'teeth were too big', only one word helped to end them: Baboons. For those still arguing (mostly those who have not studied anatomy), look at the direction of the labial foramina. They point towards the tooth, rather than outwards. These are for nerves and blood vessels, indicating the presence of lips. Therefore, T-Rex, etc, had lips. The matter is closed.

I remember reading something somewhere mentioning that part of the reason land animals have their teeth covered by something is because teeth being constantly exposed to air can dry out and damage the surface. Animals with tusks, elephants, pigs, etc., have a different sort of outer structure where this isn't a problem and crocodilians spend a lot of time in water so drying teeth isn't an issue for them. Sounds reasonable, but I don't know how truthful that is.
As for how dinosaurs are depicted, I do like the exposed teeth look, but I think a middle ground with only the tips of the biggest teeth being visible is pretty cool.

      I was thinking exactly this.
Crocs live in the water. Saber-toothed animals essentially have tusks.
Animals with fully exposed dentation tend to be aquatic only. I can't even think of a land animal with all of its teeth exposed to the air. Even the tasmanian devil has most of its mouth shut, and the ends of its canines are the only thing poking out.
You need saliva for a number of reasons. Lips keep your saliva in your mouth and keep your mouth from drying out, which keeps you hydrated as well.
I think T-rex was something like an elephant-sized, bipedal monitor lizard that had a strong bite rather than a weak one (monitor lizards have weak bites). The smaller teeth argument also makes sense to me, with teeth falling out of the socket over time. The teeth mostly just need to be able to rip.

Sauropod heads were small. But, they didn't chew -- they just cut and swallowed.
I speculate that sauropods had long tongues, which they used to strip leaves from branches and fronds,
or they used their tongues to pull vegetation into their mouths, where their incisor like teeth cut them.

This, is coming from someone who used to hate the evolution theory, simply because my religious parents had taught me so as a kid. And I found it a bit unbeliavable that a... a fish was thought to be able to turn into a kangaroo or something (as an example). @@iclynnx this is perhaps a little unrelated but please allow me.
I always say "we don't know, so why not?". For religion it's usually a feeling, how can someone accurately explain a feeling? Sometimes people just know that the things they believe in are true, and who am I to say their world-view is wrong? Because I can't possibly know everything. This applies to science as well. There's something called a paradigm shift, which in short means that a new way of thinking, believing or seeing things has changed. Before people believed and had some evidence, that the world was flat. Philosophers to great scholars. They then invented or "came upon/found" things like a magnifying glass and the like and from there, to today, the scientific community discovers new things.
I don't think this makes "the old" any less true, because it was a reality only use fire, then to use gas, today we have discovered electricity and so on so forth. I personally think that science is as much magical-like as religion, even though I'm not a devoit. I just believe that there is so many things in the world we do not know everything about/ or cannot percieve, "so why not?" 😊

There’s also the related “cheek” debate; most birds have no cheeks as well as no lips, but the duck family is the exception, often having very chubby lips. So, how many dinosaurs had cheeks? Many appear so that not having them would have made keeping food in the mouth very difficult.

As a dental hygienist who has a side enthusiasm for paleontology, I love hearing about extra oral tissues and foramina in dinosaurs. I feel like this video is just for me 😁 Human teeth are not supposed to touch when our lips are closed and at rest, much like the examples you mentioned. It’s unhealthy and damaging for our teeth and jaws to be clamped shut when we are not actively chewing. I had to memorize where all human foramina are for when I administer local anesthetic injections. We have very few compared to the animals exhibited here, and we have super floppy lips.

So, this kinda seems like a “ no brainer” to me. I’m not a scientist, but every animal needs to drink water. They are comparing a terrestrial reptile to a semi aquatic reptile. I’m assuming all a croc or gator has to do to drink water is open up their throat. Now imagine the water drinking needs of a massive terrestrial reptile. It’s going to need several hundred gallons of water each day. An animal that large probably can’t lap it up like a dog or cat. They are going to have to create suction from their throat and tongue. They probably couldn’t create enough suction with exposed teeth. Lips are required for that. And now, look at vids of how every terrestrial reptile drinks water. They dip their snout in the water and suck. Can’t do that without lips.

Excellent, up to date and comprehensive summary of the "lip or no lip" controversy in non avian dinosaurs, and particularly the T-Rex and other iconic theropods. One thing that should have been mentioned though in favor of lips, might have been the preserved evidence of true, scale covered, lizard-type lips in mummies of other types of dinosaurs, most notably the recently discovered Nodosaur mummy from Alberta. Given that the geologic conditions of "northern" North America have preserved the skin of several dinosaurs, and that this same region was also home of T-Rex and Albertosaurus, perhaps one of their mummies preserved with full skin impression (including the lips) will be discovered and then the controversy will finally end!

@@CoreyStudios2000 I think it's incredibly unlikely that they had lips, and I would bet a lot of money on it.
Crocodiles live in the water and have a substantially different hunting style. Now we also know that the closest relatives of T-rex that actually have skin impressions had lips. Aquatic animals can get by without lips because they live in the water, so their mouths don't dry out.
Land animals that can't seal their mouth shut will get dehydrated. Hippos cover their massive tusks with massive lips.
And, platypus is a mammal without lips... because it has a beak.
Beaks are a different case because they seal.
The lack of a saliva discussion around lips is actually mind-boggling to me. Lips exist because you need to use saliva to break down food, and saliva is mostly water, which evaporates.
