Lyrics:
Skin as rich as a starlit night
Your rhythm is rebellion
Deep currents running in the rivers of your eyes
Your rhythm is rebellion
They spat on your crown
And they poisoned your ground
Your rhythm is rebellion
They burned your heroes at the stake
But your voice will echo all their names
This ain’t the end, no!
It’s the birth of a new age
YU NO MAN BROKO MI (You can’t break me)
Soul blazing like a hurricane
Your rhythm is rebellion
Spirit roaring wild like untamed flames
Your rhythm is rebellion
They buried your gods
They imprisoned your thoughts
Your rhythm is rebellion
They tried to drain you of your faith
But you are the rage that melts the chains
This ain’t the end, no!
It’s the birth of a new age
We are the fruit
Adorning the legacy
Of every forgotten revolutionary
Born in resilience
Proud like a lion
We are the birth of a new age
YU NO MAN BROKO MI (You can’t break me)
MI NA AFU SENSI (I’m half a cent)

Truly awesome & brilliantly stunning...!!! The Netherlands did it again...!!!
Unpopular opinion: Europe wasn’t ready to be confronted with the truth of this masterpiece.
This is the Eurovision song I can't get out of my head. If you'd asked me to make a list of top 3, I wouldn't have picked this one as the ear-worm, but the "they poisoned your ground" and "your rhythm is rebellion" will NOT leave my brain. It probably helps that the lyrics on this one are quality. Song on repeat!
He sings in Sranantongo. One of the many languages in Suriname (and the Netherlands). Wether this is the reason why Macrooy had such a low score, I don't know. Personally I like the song and it shows that Suriname and the Netherlands are actually pretty close countries. (About ⅔ of all Surinamers live in the Netherlands because back in the day, most Surinamers didn't want independence.)
What a beautiful song, very sad that I did not get the recognition it deserved. Beautiful text, beautiful voice, beautiful instrumentalisation, great meaning!
Mind fixing that typo?
He sang in Sranan Tongo (the Broko Mi part) which sounds like "You know my broccoli) and Sranan Tongo is the second language of Suriname🇸🇷
Even more, the only people in this videos are Surinamers. This video must represent my country. And while I dont have a problem with Surinamers, its not really The Netherlands anymore. More so, we Dutch hear "You know my broccoli"
Yes very beautiful. You don't know my broccoli. You don't know my broccoli.

i think it's very powerful how jeangu has chosen to take a risk twice with his songs. i feel that both grow and this song are very personal and express hope and optimism. they're very different from each other, but i actually like them both p much equally. they just have their own unique vibes. perhaps too unique for eurovision, but that's all right! host countries rarely win twice in a row, so taking the chance to put out something close to your heart is a great way to make use of that certified spot in the finals
This video and the message for Suriname and all people struggling in the world right now is pure beauty. Well done!!
This was this year's winner for me, the most beautiful and powerful lyrics and rhythm of the whole contest! And the live performance was just as lively and even more intense than the music video, so beautiful! 😍
This is just too good for Eurovision. Stunning song. It cuts right to the heart. I love the poetry of the lyrics and the deep velvet vocals.
I totally agree...this song is soo good. I m Surinamese myself.

The song is a MASTERPIECE ❤️ Thank you Jeangu for giving to us this art. 👌🏼
This I read today: The sentence is derived from an old Surinamese saying: "mi na afu sensi, no wan man e broko mi", literally translated "I am half a cent, you cannot break me". At the time, the half cent was the smallest means of payment in Suriname and therefore literally unbreakable.

First of all as a Surinamese and fan since Between Towers, I am very proud to see you make it this far. Further, knowing that Jeangu prefers singing in English I was pleasantly surprised to hear the inclusion of our mother language.
The song is very catchy and just sticks in your head.

The music video is just gorgeous, most probably one of the best MVs that I've seen for a Eurovision song. Honestly.
And then the song is super interesting, it's extremely authentic, I love the lyrics and the truth they tell, the message they carry.
And don't even get me started on Jeangu's incredible voice.

Playing it once again just before the premiere of S10's song. It was so underrated, still one of my biggest favourites of 2021 - amazing song
It's so unpopular mostly because it represents Suriname rather then the Netherlands. I like the song too tho, except that it's not fit for a Eurovision for the Netherlands 🇳🇱. So Suriname 🇸🇷 de facto has a song on the Eurovision.

I really liked his song at Euro 2020, but I also liked this one the first time. Jeangu makes quality music. Greetings from Ukraine.

I saw a comment on a reaction video of this song that is so painfully true. It's like Eurovision fans say 'we want more ethnic stuff' and when this song dropped you'd think it'd be welcomed with open arms, but everyone is like 'Don't care lmao, let's spam broccoli emojis because it sounds like he says that a lot' ad infinitum.
it's because it's celebrating black pride.

For people who are saying: we want some songs who promote european culture and not culture from another countries/ continents.
